100 Orchid Blooms! Beginner's Luck or Expert Care?
I love that you express your faith.. thanks. I like Rick L too
False for vandas make em green and nauseated with so much water. 😂
This was a fun vid. Got two wrong lol
So that’s why. Thanks Dave.
Jewel orchid - Ludisia discolor
what is the name of the Oncidium that you showed
I'm not sure. I lost the tag.
my wallet is dedicated to me and only me lol. sadly i wish i could buy more. you know your addcited when you see empty pots and your like those things need orchids.
lol 😂
With all the constant rain you had recently, how did you avoid your orchids getting crown rot? Greetings from northern New South Wales, Australia.
I did have a lot of rot. I used Banrot at the first sign of it and it helped a lot.
Or soak vandas and let it dry.
How do you water this? do you soak the hole thing? wont that make the wood break down very quicly?? i wuold really like to know since this looks very good!
Soak the whole thing. Make sure it is. made from cedar or teak. Not regular wood.
Thrips🤬 Thrips🤬 Thrips🤬. Sevin 🤗
Keep these videos coming you help me a beginner so much❤
I wish you would've qualified your statement about orchids not growing in freezing places . . . THESE types of orchids don't grow in freezing places, but there are over 200 orchids that call North America home, all the way up to Alaska, as well as whatever might grow in Europe. The presence of betaline and anthocyanin pigments also indicates the potential ability to handle temperature extremes outside of what may normally occur in a species' natural environment. I can sleep comfortably with my Cattleyas getting blasted with 35F air for a few nights as long as theyre dry, and have never once incurred cold damage from it. Just offering a different perspective so as not to scare anyone away from the hobby if they dont immediately live in a tropical place (I’m outside of DC).
Yes! People need to know about Banrot. Woulda been my #1 on the list also. I was on the verge of losing my entire collection of Australian dendrobiums when I finally learned about Banrot from Nature Nel. Wish I knew of it sooner bc my dens are still recovering from the setback 2 yrs later, but at least I still have them.
What a collection you have. I thought I was addicted to buying orchids, but you are worse 😂
Hybrids and mutants are completely different things, that was an awful analogy!!! BTW, I got them all right, except for the wife's pick!
Hi Dave, love your videos. The PVC shade house in Ya ya's back yard, did you say she purchased it on Amazon? I would love to get one for my orchids.
Yes, Amazon. I can't remember what it is called.
Banrot not available in my country 😿
You have an amazing collection of orchids! That vanda is huge!! Thanks for all the care tips. And if you ever want to gift any of your orchids, I'll be happy to receive them. 😂😍😃
Thanks Dave! Personally I love your neighbor-guy folksy approach to your channel. So many TH-camrs just want to show off what they know, but you are humble and realistic. Thanks for making orchids approachable and fun! From a fellow North Central Florida Floridian.
healthy is the word for your orchids and happy.
Fun and educational video. Is that a bowringiana in the background at the beginning of the video? What a phenomenal plant!
Yes it is :)
What about RepotMe orchid food (slow release)??
Works great. I just find it to be very expensive. Dynamite is like a quarter of the cost.
To make it more confusing, there are natural hybrids also.
Enjoy your videos tremendously!!! You’re orchid charismatic!!!
I semi flunked the test.
I am 1. Very pleased with myself. As an orchid novice, I only got 3 questions wrong 2. Very thankful for your quiz. Adult learners learn best when they are challenged ! So keep them coming Dave !
Me 2!😂
Best to use elastic ties. I use strips cut from stockings. They work the best.
Very nice video
Fun video! Great idea for something new 👏🏼
I’m loving this. Watching right now ❤❤🙏🙏
...yawn....
If you cut the vanda spike once the blooms start to wilt where do you cut it? Close to the plant or just under the last bloom or does it not matter?
Close to the plant but I don't know that it matters.
I got 90% of the questions right apart from your sentimental question and I consider myself a novice. Regarding vandas needing the most light, I think you should look into eulophia petersii orchids, you'll be surprised what you'd find... Im still learning and I'll always be a novice with the amount of stuff to know. The more we know the less we realize we know. Thank you for this, it's different, relevant and fun. Cheers!
😂😂 I love thecatering comment atthe end 😂😂😂😂
I mount so many hard cane dendrobiums on my Robilina Palms. They are all doing exceptionally well and bloom frequently when fertilized or not. Remember Mother Nature takes care of her plants. I am borrowing them for the time I have on earth to enjoy the splendor of green foliage and exquisite flowers. Respectfully,
Hello Dave, Where do you purchase your cedar for Cattleya mounts and how thick are the pieces? The last few moments of your most recent TH-cam video is critical for placement in the beginning of the video; in case your viewing audience doesn't stick around for the entire episode. Each grower should consider: the RIGHT PLANT, FOR THE RIGHT PLACE.Select orchids that are best-suited to your area weather conditions. Watch the summer and nighttime temperatures. Finally ask the vendors you purchase your orchids from where in the world the plant naturally grows so you can make the best decision to purchase or maybe not purchase if that plant doesn't fit in your growing climate.
Nice orchids garden...❤😅😊
ah wow I didn't know you could get a lux meter for $35. I'll have to go look for one. I know I like to be critical with my commenting but it's nothing personal, I just do not trust the internet when it comes to orchids. It's basically just the collective knowledge of hundreds of beginners. And people that really know the most about orchids get drowned out by the beginners copying what other beginners have told them. So sometimes collective knowlege is not always the right answer. Like no offence but I have followed many other youtubers with supposedly 30 years of experience and they do things wrong. Don't even get me started on what makes phalaenopsis flower. You will never get the right answer to that one when it is so simple once you have figured it out and it's fairly simple to figure it out but again collective knowlege kicks in - beginners get told in their first year growing that you have to crack a window in autumn to get them to flower when that does nothing at all in my experiments and although the right answer can be found online you really have to search long and hard through scientific papers to get the right answer. One further point, again just what the internet says vs what I have found: You can grow phalaenopsis and vandas under the same light level under LED lights... Right, that doesn't make much sense to an outdoor grower right and outdoors you could never get away with that. But in doors you can because LED lights give off very little heat. So phals can handle a lot lot more than 1000-2000. Ok I've never tried as high as 6000 but they can easily handle the same as cattleyas. Outdoors the heat would make their leaves burn but indoors growing them under more light is fine and actually makes them grow faster. Sorry if I keep trying to come off as a know it all. I hate people that do that to me and I know it seems that way when I comment. I don't mean to. I just wish others would care about knowing the right answers instead of the first answer they find on google and call it a day at that. I so wish we all had the same answers and I could agree with other growers. Sometimes I suspect people prefer to believe the most popular answer even if they know it might not even be the right one lol. Who knows. It does drive me bonkers that like said once you have grown for 10 years you should figure out the answers you were told in the very first year will not match up with the things you learn growing them over the years. That is just my experience I guess. I have often attributed it to me being an indoor grower under LED lighting and I was one of the first ones to grow under LED lighting. The technology is very new still and finding good orchid LEDS (you know ones that don't completely blind you) has been challenging in the past. I still wonder how much orchids do photosynthezise via their roots vs their leaves. I know they do it but how much is it done? Who knows. I think people discovered it mainly because there are certain completely leafless orchids one can buy that are just bundles of roots. Again, I must point out though, if you have grown orchids long enough, you would discover that not all leafless orchid species are actually leafless in master growers collections. Some growers are able to grow their "leafless" orchids to produce leaves. So beginners will tell you "it is leafless so the only way it can photynthesize is through its roots" But it might just be that they are just so difficult to grow hardly anyone can get them to grow leaves successfully. I'll admit I won't bother with such a tricky variety myself, I have just seen what can be done in some peoples collections. And logic just tells me if an orchid has a few leaves it will photosynthesize and grow better than one that has no leaves. Once again thank you dave for keeping it fun and honest. Like said I know I tend to be over critical when other youtubers bring out a video saying they have all the answers when all they did was google the answer instead of figuring out the right answer from decades of trials and errors themselves. Nobody does the trials and errors cause nobody likes losing an orchid doing so lol.
The more info the better...
Well I learned a lot in this comment too! And what a lot of us have found, is whatever personal microclimate you're trying to grow your orchids in has a lot to do with success/failure. One size does not fit all.
I think your Q & A video was a great way to help us learn. Thanks. PS What did you break?
A terracota pot :(
Wire basket from dollar tree
Those plants look really nice, you should see some of the ones I’ve received but I have no choice 😢. I live in Hawaii on the island of Kauai and there is NO WAY to get orchids beside Etsy, Ebay and Home Depot. It helps to read the descriptions Dave they usually tell you what size pot they’re sending .Oh and I just subscribed and liked all your videos 😂😂😂
Your advice is amazing...hope u saw the SHORT that I tagged you in
😆Got a little repetitive towards the end, but good info. "Liked and subscribed'. 😀
Seven powder works great on scale bugs.
Love your channel! So informative and yes, funny too. Keep it up! Beautiful orchid oasis. And yes, how do you dispose of the bucket of “Banrot” solution?
Your plants are absolutely AMAZING in blooms😍
If your orchids could talk, they would call you " Daddy". 😂 i can see your love for them. How do you dispose off the Banrot ?
"You look marvelous!" Keep up the videos. Love your pool enclosure orchid house.
