- This important Western Conference First Round playoff game between the Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Norm Nixon, Jamaal Wilkes and Michael Cooper led Los Angeles Lakers and the Moses Malone, Calvin Murphy, Robert Reid, Billy Paultz and Mike Dunleavy led Houston Rockets would take place on April 5, 1981.
It's so nice to see post play again!
Awesome upload! Thanks for keeping intro and commercials. Great time capsule.
Best of three made things interesting.
Yep, just like a miniskirt: Long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep things interesting.😊

There was a reason why the first round was referred to as the "dreaded" mini series. If a team--even one superior in talent--wasn't ready to play, it could be beaten in a short series. The Rockets were just a bad matchup for Los Angeles. They weren't pretty, but their ability to pound the offensive glass limited the Lakers' fastbreak opportunities and forced them to play more of a halfcourt game.
Excellent picture quality! Thank you.
My Dawg! I've been looking for this game where Magic threw up the airball!

I can't tell if Magic was fouled or not, the slow motion replay picks it up too late. The defender was doing a lot of swatting at his arms and wrist. Looks like his left hand hit Magic right arm as he was going up. Whether that is considered incidental or a foul I don't know. Its definitely debatable.
No foul on Magic. He shot an airball. Trying to play hero ball. The play was called for Kareem
Excellent footage quality. And interesting match. Thanks you!!
Paul westhead Got out coached in the game against Houston. The Lakers didn't want this game as bad as the rockets!
Crazy to be inside the huddle on TO's. Couldn't imagine having that in today's world.
woow thanks very rare and excellent quality ¡
Thanks for sharing this!!! As great as Magic was the year before in game 6 of the Finals = Magic was terrible in this game = Yikes!!!!!!
I saw this from winning time so I thought this sort of play never actually happened but wow… how do you airball it like that? As a Houstonian I’m more baffled than anything else
The free throws were much worse than the airball to win. The old 3 to make 2 rule should've basically ensured the Lakers had a two point lead, but Magic really gacked this one.
Dr. J also choked horribly in game 7 vs the Celtics. Everyone not named Michael Jordan choked at some point in their career. But this wasn't even the "Tragic Johnson" year was it?
@@ckobo84 1984 was the Tragic Johnson year but he blew this game trying to play hero ball
Imagine a team today shooting 18% from the 3 point line for the season
Here was Houston Rockets before entered by Hakeem Olajuwon. However, the winner of 1981 NBA title was BOSTON CELTICS with their champion mentality !!!!!
I wish Houston had John Lucas at point guard
Boston was lucky Houston knocked out the Lakers those two seasons
Where's Calvin Murphy
Guess you're not aware that Moses Malone taught Hakeem when he was a redshirt freshman for the Houston Cougars. Hakeem was a soccer player named Akeem Abdul Olajuwon before Moses taught him basketball. Moses taught Charles Barkley as well
@MarcConnelly-phn8uu Calvin Murphy was too little. Norm Nixon was too quick and Magic was 6'8"
Magic choked at the free throw line 😂
Like If You Watched Winning Time
Magic had a bad game,in puts the icing on the cake with the airball to seal the deal for the Rockets.
Boston was lucky those two seasons when Houston knocked out the Lakers
Awesome. Thanks. You have 86 finals game 6?
Yeah I have that rare full game
@@RareNBAFootage sweet. Hopefully if u get a chance can you post please.
I thought the narrative was that Kareem couldn't handle Moses. In the do or die game three Kareem outscored Moses 32pts to 23pts,outrebounded him 18rebs to 15rebs and had more blocks and assists than Moses. He also outrebounded him in game two of that series but his haters never mention these facts.
@marckellough529 true. Moses was flopping in the lane a couple of times when Kareem got the ball.
If Jabbar had gotten the ball one time Lakers probably win.
Should the NBA bring back these best of 3s? Instead of this play in stuff.
