  • If you're anything like me, then you know that one of the most important things to make a long flight as comfortable as possible is to have the perfect carry-on bag. I've been on a quest to find the perfect bag for my personal item, and I've tested bags from Eagle Creek, Bellroy, Peak Design and Alpaka Gear.

Greetings from Brazil! We finally made it to our destination.
If you want to know what I packed for this trip: th-cam.com/video/9-EKvo-2J1I/w-d-xo.html
And thanks to everyone for the bag suggestions! I will have a look at all of them once we are a little bit more settled in here in Brazil. But I can already tell that I am glad that I am not able to order bags at the moment - otherwise I would have 25 new ones… 😂

It’s so interesting how what ‘works’ for each of us can be so idiosyncratic! I had a great fanny pack/sling which I absolutely loved. Just before a recent trip the zipper broke and I was scrambling. I got that bag used and did not know the brand. I then went through SEVEN different brands, including Bellroy, and ended up with a Cotapaxi 2 l bag. I haven’t travelled with it yet but so far I really like it! And most importantly it has a zippered pouch at the back for my passport! Thanks for your great videos. Really great info and love how you present!

Travelon and Pacsafe have (their anti-theft collection) bags that have metal meshing to prevent people from cutting the straps and the bags and they have locks/theft prevention for the zippers and straps. They are a little heavier but I don't have to worry about people stealing from me. Most of their bags also have pockets for water bottles and RFID card slots :)

There is also a safety trick with the key fob. Wrap it through the metal loop or handle until it is short enough just to bend back and clip on to the main zipper. No one can access it.

I use Pacsafe crossbody bags for EDC on longer trips. The quality is outstanding, the security features are perfect, the styles are good, and I feel confident that because I'm vigilant I won't get pickpocketed or get my bag snatched.
I have that Eagle Creek packable tote and haven't yet used it on a trip. You've inspired me to use it this fall in Europe. A traveler always needs a tote for groceries and purchases made in a given day. Thanks for an excellent video.

Kipling are excellent bags, very lightweight and the plain bags can go into a light wash. They are very well made will hold a huge amount and will not break , the zips are very sturdy . The bags are comfortable and there uses a huge range. They can be pricey though. I also have eagle creek packing cubes which are great .

Great video! I have been using a Sherpani Convertible Backpack/Crossbody for the past several years and I love it. It still looks great and has no damage even though I travel about twice a month. And it has outside bottle/whatever pockets. And has several other pockets on the outside as well as on the inside. And it has a document sleeve as well as a sleeve for putting it on roller bags on the back (if you don't want to use it as a luggage sleeve, it zips closed at the bottom and can be used as another pocket). It is the perfect size for under the seat.
I also use a Herschel Alder bag for my EDC while at my destination. It looks a lot like your Alpaka bag--black and flat and crossbody. It fits neatly into my person item and it is perfect for when I am at my destination and don't need my big packpack.

I use the Eddie Bauer Stowaway packable sling bag for my personal item and I love it! The strap can change sides, and it opens from the top like a backpack, so it can be ambidextrous. It has a bottle slot (only on one side, though), and minimal but serviceable pockets, and minimal but serviceable padding. It might not fit your needs for security, but it folds down small and was in my price range. I'm a fan of it!

Hi Maggi, Good question, haha! I have not found an ideal bag, and part of me would love to travel with underseat only. We usually have our backpacks with waterbottle holders, and then we have Marimekko PAL bags. They are not perfect, but they pack flat and can look nice enough for casual day crossbody. But I am not sure they would suit your purposes. I was actually very tempted by the Eagle Creek Wayfarer as it worked for Lufthansa/Condor. It is a tricky question! Happy travels 😊

For actual flight days, I add a normal generic bumbag/fanny pack that can carry a powerbank, phone, some snacks, tissues etc. Its not counted as a personal item, especially if reversed.
I also use a Nanobag Nanopack that is a 23g drawstring 'backpack' that I can use to 'wear' my laptop on my back under my clothes if my weight is flagged. When I have it on under a jacket, you cannot see it, and it gets me through check-in.
I also have a lightweight Scottevest travel vest that weighs not much and can fit a bunch of stuff in the pockets if you need to wear it.
All that said, I mostly just try to not pack so much in the first place, but these give me peace of mind.

I think you would probably like Tom Bihn bags. I travel with an Aeronaut 30 as my main bag and either one of their Everyday Cubelet or Side Effect bags as my personal item. Australian airlines can be very stingy with their carry on limits so I like being able to fit my personal item inside my main bag if I need to.

I have a Kipling cross body bag. I think it's the Syro. Great for everyday and travel abd washes well. I hang a collapsible water bottle off it. I would put it on before putting my backpack cabin bag on my shoulders. I like the security abd hands free nature of cross-body although I would never have worn one before I started travelling.
Have a great time in Brazil :)

    • @MaggiFuchs
      @MaggiFuchs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I never heard of this bag before, but it looks like you made a excellent choice. 👍 The compartments seem very practical, and I like the zippered pocket in the back to keep valuables close to the body. I also used to put on the messenger bag first before the backpack, but the backpack kind of pushed down the messenger bag, so it got even more heavy. I guess it was just a little big too big so they got in the way of each other.
Which collapsible water bottle are you using? I have been thinking of buying one for a while.

@@MaggiFuchs I've been using the Vapur 700ml for a while and really like it. Doesn't get much use when I'm not traveling though as I prefer an insulated bottle for every day.
For security I have a Ruit day bag with all the zips against my back which is good for days out. I also added s-biner micro locks to my backpack to ad an extra layer to get through of someone wants to steal anything, without the hassle of locks.

I have too much luggage, always searching for the perfect bag! Well, now I have a perfect bag for different type of trips! I'm partial to the roller bag I bought in Germany, it's hard side, open in the middle with zip up on each interior side....I can't over pack it and it's super light weight and the wheels move like butter along the floor. But, it's a roller bag, so I use it only if we'll be some place that that'll be okay. For backpack, the Osprey Porter 30L or the Peak Design 30-45L - they're both well made bags, and I lean toward liking the Peak Design better, but the Osprey has it's features too! If security is important, I'll go with the hardside Level 8 roller carry-on I have since it has no zippers and can be locked, and the handle can be secured to something in a room if needed too.
