I love the 2017 stereo remix never liked the way the original stereo mix had the drums squished and hard panned on either the left or right channel Giles did a really good job on this one imo
It has been pointed out that my 1967 pressing is actually a mono copy. Also, I did my best to include the longest samples I could. This was my third upload attempt as TH-cam kept blocking the previous videos on copyright grounds.
Vinyl Rewind Thank you for all of your uploads, research and hardwork. I don't think the average viewer realizes how draining it can be to work so hard on a video only to have it removed by TH-cam. You make quality content. I greatly appreciate it.
Vinyl Rewind I totally understand! Hot commodities like the Beatles are very protective! From what I could hear the subtle differences. It's interesting to hear the first generation of the original tapes after all these years! Four track recording may seem restrictive by today's standards but was a wonder back then!
I thought I noticed that, but it didn't really affect the overall experience or the comparative analysis. It's a great post, and I appreciate you clarifying that point here.
Joseph Murrieta I own the 2017 copy. Disc one side one is like any normal record. Disc one side two does have the locking groove with the weird "never have you any other way" nonsensical words. Disc two has a locking groove on both sides but no audio on those. I hope that helps.
This dude's everything is my dream. Record Collection, hi-fi record players, sense of fashion, jawline, hairdo, house (even if it is just a recording studio, I want my entire house to look like this) and most definitely, his speaking voice. Edit: He just has an air of cool that surrounds him. I want that so much.
Wow! I am honored. Thank you so much for the kind shout out! You actually beat me to the punch on this one and I am kind of glad you did. I have been searching for an original press since the reissue came out to run a compare against this new 2017 version and the 2012 release. Alas, I have had no luck in finding a good clean original '67 issue in my area. Thank you so much for putting this together my friend. This was incredible and I could hear the difference in the clips. You have answered my questons on this on.
Thank you Paul! I think I have '68 US pressing but that's in bad shape too. It's hard to find them in good condition. I would still love to hear your thoughts
Sadly Let It Be was not "accepted" by the beatles themselves. They thought of releasing "Get Back" album with the same picture "Please Please Me" had as cover. Since they broke up in '69, in 1970 they did not work on Let It Be and someone else made the masters and composed music for the tracks. Paul McCartney wanted to have Let It Be as it should have been, there Let It Be Naked was born with cleaner versions, cut the songs that weren't finished and got rid of all the strings over the songs, as they weren't even made by George Martin.
It's not really accurate to say that Let it be was not accepted by the Beatles as the only one who wasn't happy with the final result was Paul and that's only because he didn't have a final say in the way his tracks were handled. Though apparently he didn't bother listening to it until it was too late to change it. Phil Spector was put in charge of the album because the Beatles were too fed up with being the Beatles to work on it themselves but that didn't stop John, Ringo and George from signing off on it, I think Paul signed off on it too but without listening to it or something.
Paul has said on interviews that he listened to the record and sent a letter saying that he does not aprove what they had done with the record, but they released it anyways without his consent i guess
In my opinion this new stereo remix really is the best way to hear pepper and brings pepper to new life! The new remix sounds so much clearer, punchier, and a bit modern, this new remix makes Sgt.Pepper sound #1 again and quite frankly the new remix is addicting making me want to hear the album over and over again! Definitely beats out the 2009 remasters but I still have some respect for the 1967 mono version don't get me wrong!
I actually love what they did to Lucy in the Sky. It sounds more ethereal and psychedelic. The subtle voices (instruments) are much better. The same with Benefit for Mr. kite. Startlingly wonderful.
I remember listening to the 2017 mix of “Within You Without You” and my main shock was how the song ends with decipherable crying/laughing sounds and then flawlessly went into “When I’m Sixty-Four”
One of the most important things about this stereo mix, is that they’re proper stereo mix’s, of the Beatles original Mono mix, so the speed difference on tracks like She’s leaving home is apparent with it’s beautiful stereo
I have this 2017 pressing, I had the 2012 pressing (but quickly got rid of that one), and I have a UK stereo press that was included in the BC13 box set from 1978. Of all the pressings I’ve heard, the early UK pressing is hands down the best.
When “Within You, Without You” came on, I was flabbergasted by what I was hearing. It was as if Harrison was in the same room with me. His vocals were just so incredibly out front for the first time ever. The mix of that song is superlative. I feel the same about Ringo’s drumming as well throughout the record. I pray Giles Martin is now doing the same for the White Album.
She's leaving home sounds slightly sped up which never sat with me quite right. I'm used to listening to the 2009 remaster of the album. I can't deny that the 2017 version is beautifully mixed.
The intended speed for She’s Leaving Home is the faster one. The original mono mix sounds that way, but it was slowed down for the stereo mix. Giles, when remixing the album, chose to remix the song at the faster speed.
I too will have to admit that the 2017 remix was DEFINITELY a shock to the ears-and the system-the first couple of times I heard it. And I initially wasn't sure if I liked it, either. But the third listen was where I really started to appreciate it. And it's only kept growing on me since. You might say that, of the three vinyl editions I now own (the 2012 Stereo, 2014 mono and 2017 remix), this has become my go-to!
Absolutely spot on with your "Within You Without You" comments. When the Harrison vocal began, I was stunned by how magnificent it sounded. Superb analysis. Well done.
I do too. "Back in the U.S.S.R." is an even mix in stereo, which is why the mono is preferable. But on the other hand, I like the stereo mix of "While My Guitar..." is a little superior to the mono, but can be improved on. I prefer the UK mix of "Martha". There is a slight difference in Tambourine placement between the US & UK mix of "Dear Prudence". For outtakes, I hope they use the full outtake of "Good Night" that was excerpted in the "Anthology" film, where you hear "Ringo" talking through it. On bootleg, you have the ten minute outtake of "Revolution 1".
With the White album, the bass really lets it down. It could sound a lot more cleaned up and make it sound a lot more modern like they did with Sgt Pepper. Make it sounds more full and not so 'things on one side'. I also want an extended version of the Helter Skelter take, as well as that take of Goodnight. Oh and by the way, they are doing the White album, Giles has admited it himself ;)
I believe that "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" on the 2017 mix is closer to the original Mono mix. What I love on this 2017 mix is the initial keyboard play (not sure if that was a keyboard or not) changes into different stereo channels. It's different than the older mixes and has a better separation of the instruments. I agree with you with "Lovely Rita", "Within You Without You", and "A Day in the Life". They are outstanding! My only exception is John's vocals on "A Day in the Life". In older stereo versions, John's vocals panned from the left stereo channel to the right stereo channel and vice versa. The 2017 mix had John's vocals straight in the center, which took some of the mystique away from the track. Also, I do appreciate the TH-cam work that you do. I had done some videos myself and it's hard work, especially trying to bypass the whole TH-cam blocking due to copyright grounds. That's a subject matter for another time. Thanks again. P. S. I loved your review of ELO's "Time". I love that album and ELO as a whole.
The amount of time and effort that was put into recreating the original mix is simply incredible - I wish more albums from the late 60s could be given the same treatment. Thank God they got rid of the hard panning and lack of reverb on the vocals. Regarding this video, I really appreciate the fact you included good long samples of all the versions.
More info: Overall, using the original pristine tapes (not the mixed tapes used for all previous versions) in 2017 enabled better quality to be pulled from the tapes than in 1967. On the definitive mono mix of Sgt. Pepper's, the track She's Leaving Home has the pitch a half-step up from the stereo mix. This higher pitch is how The Beatles wanted it to sound (Paul wanted his voice to sound younger). Remixing enabled Giles Martin to match the pitch from the mono version on the new high resolution stereo version. The original recording of the strings in She's Leaving Home was used to create this new remix, sounding much better than what was available for the 2009 remasters. In the track Lovely Rita, Giles Martin was able to move instruments into the right channel rather than just the left channel because there were no technical limitations from the four-track system used back in 1967. This sounds much more like the mono than the 2009 stereo remasters. There is actually a good sounding kick drum in Lovely Rita's high resolution version because according to Giles Martin, remixing enables him to bring out each player individually and in this case give Ringo a big thump where it should be. On the original mixes, this drum was said to be veiled / pushed down because of the limitations of the vinyl playback medium and not wanting to knock the needle out of the groove (per Giles Martin). On Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Johns voice has really neat sounding ADT (artificial double-tracking). But this was only in the mono version of the album, again because of technical limitations. On the new high resolution version the ADT effect was brought into the stereo version as it should have been all along. Sgt. Pepper's Reprise was remixed to get the organ off to the left side, out of the center. This is how it should have been. Giles used meticulous notes of the recording sessions to closely follow what the band had wanted. Giles doesn't like album clean-ups with modern technology because they don't sound good. He likes the dirt. Thus, the high resolution Sgt. Pepper's isn't one of those poor sounding clean up jobs. It's the definitive version. On A Day in the Life, the strings are much more dynamic because of Giles going back to the original tapes (not master tapes already mixed). Also on A Day in the Life, Ringo's drums are much closer to the mono version. They sound like an explosion rather than the totally flat, zero impact drums on the 2009 stereo remasters. According to Giles, John's voice and George's bass are much deeper and precede on the 2017 remix as well. The 2017 high resolution remix of Sgt. Pepper's like a stereo version of the mono, that The Beatles slaved over, but better.
Sorry you've been struggling with fair use man, I've been hesitant on getting the 50th anniversary edition, mainly because the price of the 50th anniversary edition but, I hope at one point I can sit down and listen to it and make a decision then, but I have high hopes since I was able to get the remastered version of Pennylane/Strawberry Fields Forever on record store day and was blown away.
For the most part, I agree with what you've said about the new remix. I do love Lucy though. It sounds much better in headphones. You are so right about the spacial awareness of the mix of the album, and Lucy shows this when listening through headphones.. Giles really has captured the mood and intent of the album in his remix.
Excellent over-view, Geek. The big difference I hear in the new 2017 remix is the live in studio quality about it. Particularly noticeable on the head phones, you feel the band is sitting right in front of you. This is truly the way stereo records were meant to be. In the 60's stereo was pretty much an after thought. Well done.
Yep. The 2017 stereo remix of Peppers was very much based on the mono mix with ,for example, the phasing on John Lennon's vocals on 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.' I also like the fact the vocals are centred and have a wider spectrum. Cheers and thanks for the stellar videos.
you have a great ear. i agree: cleaner and crisper only brings greater appreciation of their (often underappreciated) musicianship. and yet, the cacophony of mr kite actually benefited by 1967's muddy swirls.
Thanks for doing this review! I appreciate you guys listening. I agree about the 2012 mixes, WAY too much muddiness. My takeaway from the 2017 mix: Right channel has been opened all the way up. The other pressings, is left channel heavy IMO.
My vinyl of Sgt Peppers is on the USA Apple label that I bought when I was 12 in 1974. And of course its worn out from the Zillion times I played it! I felt the same way with the 2012 CD reissues. They didn't "brickwall" compress them but they boosted the bass so the songs would sound better on mp3 players and cell phones. I love the new remix, its very headphones friendly. I wish Giles would do the same for the Magical Mystery Tour and Revolver albums.
I am most familiar with the introduction of Sgt Peppers by CD, so, even through headphones connected to TH-cam, I can still feel the difference in experience as if switching shoes with sandals. Thanks for the review.
I actually really enjoy all the remixes and remasters that are coming out these days of classic albums in many cases they make these old records sound three dimensional and breathe new life into them its interesting to listen to something that you thought you knew inside and out and realize that there is so much more that has been hiding in those songs that you never heard or noticed before
The 2017 version of Lucy in the sky with diamonds I actually love so much. It's got some tape warp and is actually a fraction slower. What I love about that is it really shows the age, and puts into perspective just how long ago the beatles were active. And it gives more power to the climactic "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" after that 4 Tom hit. But the best part is the vocal effect on Johns voice is actually audible. You could only hear it truly on the mono first pressing, now you can hear it fully and completely. She's leaving home too, also having it not pitched down makes it feel so much more natural
Im happy I bought this 2017 Version. I bought it before reviews but since I never open my Vinyl I wait to hear MP3 releases and watch TH-cam for my music purchases. Digging your channel man and love the layout/Studio I pre-ordered the Let It Be Box Set...Hopefully you also get one so I can watch your review since mine will never get opened.
I love Mr Kite on the new mix. It’s like hearing it for the first time. The 2017 mix in my opinion is the best Pepper available. It like comparing video tape and Bluray.
I just picked up a sealed copy of the 2012 version (first time I've had Sgt. Pepper on LP since my father's copy) and I'm looking forward to spinning it. Thanks for the comparative look. I love the channel and your style. Keep it up!
The one big gripe I have about the 2017 mix is the pitching up of She’s Leaving Home. The original mono mix was actually pitched up to make Paul sound younger, but the stereo was kept in its original pitch. I prefer the original non-mono pitch, it fits the ballad way more than the faster version.
For information, Here in the UK many schools & libraries had special concerts for the stereo version when the album was first released in 1967, I was 17 at the time & most people didn't have stereo record players.
I'm pleased that Giles Martin remixed the vocal on "When I'm 64" so that it is no longer limited to either the left or right channels....but is now beautifully centered.
The 2017 mix sounds incredible. If the rumors that white album is getting the treatment in 2018 are true, I’m even more excited for that when it comes.
I've got the 2017 but I just picked up a near mint copy of 1971 Apple stereo pressing and it sounds amazing, dynamics and clarity at least equal the 2017 based on my initial listening, although I need to do a consecutive listen through the whole album of both pressings.
Am really digging this channel! Really glad I stumbled upon it. This is something that I wanted to do myself but lacked the other versions to compare, except the 2012 or 2009 version. I just watched the White Album comparison and really enjoyed it and now this Pepper’s one. I have to agree, obviously, that this new remaster is just eargasmic!!! The sound is just SO full and thick!! As far as Lucy goes tho, I personally love this version. It sounds different mainly because of the fact that George’s sitar playing can actually be heard so well and clearly. On Kite, this might be the only case in which the total clarity of each instrument or loop or what have you makes it totally different. The muddled blending actually gave this an overall better sound and it audibly kind of tricked the ear and caused us to form the melody with what wasn’t there, but this pulls the curtain back or puts it through a magnifying glass to where it doesn’t blend anymore. All the different aspects can be heard so clearly that it takes away from the aesthetics of the original and I personally don’t care for it. But I LOVE the original. But with EVERY other song in every aspect I love what Giles has done and this just somehow turned a masterpiece into....uh an even bigger masterpiece? Lol Great vid thanks
Perfect video..thanks 🙂 I heard for the original stereo 1967 mix, George Martin and the Beatles left it to the engineers to do it. They were only concerned with the mono version
The cacophonous part in Mr Kite is pretty interesting. Their engineer cut up a bunch of tapes of carnival music and then randomly pieced them back together for the song. I think it's awesome being able to hear it more clearly.
I could see where the presenter disagrees with the clarity presented in the new version, but been listening since '81 and it's been working for me the last (near) 5 years
Glad to see your channel getting more attention. It boggles my mind why it isn’t bigger. The set design/lighting/content are all too notch. I want to sit in that room, in a suit, with a whiskey, and listen to records.
I love geeking out on this stuff. I haven't heard the 2017 stereo mix, besides what I just heard here, but I love what Giles did with it. I read a ton about how they had to bake the master session tapes, as a lot of analog tape starts to get "sticky" with age and transfer everything. That's a huge job, with a lot of things that can go wrong and I'm so glad they pulled it off. As a musician and engineer I appreciate a complimentary mix/master of a song and the samples I heard here nailed it. I wasn't thrilled with the stereo mixes of the Kinks records I bought, and even Pet Sounds has some strange things going on with the low end, so I'm happy they got these right. I hope to get my turntable up and running soon so I can hear this.
+Vinyl Rewind yes I promise you,Giles Martin is working on the White album as we speak. Genuinely mate. I doubt know if its for the 50th anniversary of it but it probably is. That's a bit of insider info I got a few months back. I don't know if its more known now but Martin said he wanted the Pepper anniversary edition to ruin it's course before they start banging on about the white album.
Sgt Pepper's is my favorite beatles album and up there with my favorite albums of all time! Every song is amazing with varried ideas and emotions. The psychadelic Lucy in the Sky, The depressing She's Leaving Home, the Hopeful "It's getting Better" and the climactic "A Day in the Life". I will pick this over Abbey Road any day! The one thing that really drew me towards it when I first listened to it at 14 was the looping track at the end. The "Inner Loop" I was listening to this falling asleep (Because I listened to music to go to sleep back then... Now I listen to Game Grumps compilations) and the end woke me up in a panic! I thought there was something wrong with the disc. I find out later that that was on purpose. That's when I learned about record grooves and the tricks you can do with that and I remember thinking "That's so freaking cool!" I've longed for this one on vinyl and Dad got me the 2015 remastered Mono (thank you) version of it for my birthday... but it didn't sound quite right. I played it on the older turn table downstairs and everything sounded off. I played it on my newer AT USB and it sounds good. And I was enjoying it... until it got to the end. I waited and waited for the looping part and.... the arm returns. After many frustrating hours of fiddling with it, I found a screw on the bottom I can adjust to make the return come later... or not at all. But still.. that first experience left a sour taste in my mouth for the vinyl. Plus... the cover looks very faint for some reason. I really want to pick up this version on vinyl sometime soon!
Thanks for this! I had just gotten the 2012 vinyl in March of this year. So I went CD for 2017. Damn.... The generational losses due to the track bounce is gone. It's like taking the sepia tones out of an aged print. And in doing so Pepper's becomes a monster of an experience. It's not a museum piece or some old rock novelty. It sounds like it'd just came out.
I love it. It's perfect. In the original mono mix, I loved how the horn section blasted the riff out during John's dream sequence. It's mixed down a little in the new one, but overall, it's a hell of a mix. I have the box set and I picked up the vinyl edition of 2017. The LP sounds a bit warmer. I think the 2009 stereo LP sounds very nice on CD, but I didn't like it much on LP, but the remastered mono sounds fantastic. However, 2017 makes it sound like an 8-track tape.
This album is a prime example of technology finally catching up with the intention of its creators. When done properly remastering will enhance these classic gems from the past. Thank god George Martin took notes! I hope the same care is taken for future endeavors no matter who the artist is when considering remastering.
Once again another great upload Would be interesting to see a comparison between the new 2017 stereo mix and the 2014 mono reissue I agree the new stereo mix has a much broader sound to it, the 2014 surprisingly punches hard and sounds so much better than the 2012 stereo Keep spinning and shaking those cocktails.
I have a 1980s stereo pressing and to be quite honest I think it's the best one for me. Compared to the others, it's so cheap and still retains the great sound.
hI! For many years The Beatles and George Martin said that the Mono is the version that we should listen. That is the reason why this 2017 new remix is inspired by that mix of Sgt Peppers. But, if you listen the beginning of the Sgt peppers reprise, you realize that the sound effect of the audience is missing. Sad, because that is my favorite effect.
Thank you for your thoughts. This is slightly off topic, but I have to disagree with you regarding perception of stereo imaging with headphones vs speakers. Both are valuable and completely valid ways of experiencing audio, but if you are in the sweet spot of a pair of honest, quality speakers, I feel you are getting a more honest representation. This also happens to be the standard professional engineers use for audio mixing and mastering. Full disclosure: I use professional audio equipment, including near-field reference studio monitors, and mix/mastering headphones for listening for enjoyment as well as music production.
You are right ! 2017 Mix it's the best Mix by far, the instruments sound pretty good, especially the drums and the experience it's better with Headphones'!
Are we talking about the sleeve or the actual label on the record? Cause I can't see the label well enough to tell. If you mean the sleeve, only the American Capitol put a yellow banner across the top with "stereo" on it, and these are Parlophone editions, so your '67 copy could still be stereo. It would say pcs in the catalogue number for stereo, and pcm for mono.
The only thing missing is the Capitol US version and it did have the same sound quality than this UK original and other reissues from the 1980’s, and both the 2012 and 2017 remixes.
I have a 2017 sgt pepper's vinyl and i love it because it is much more cleaner. It Is a digital record but it seems so much better than the 1967 recording.
I hope you do a stereo comparison of the White Album as well! Me personally I don't like newer editions because that's not how they were mixed originally, and I like to hear the album's the way the Beatles themselves put them out. But that's just me. But I appreciate what you did on this and I am a audiophile so I love it!
I love the new reissue remix. It really. It Is the mix that should have been. Wish the other compact discs mixes from the boxset were released on vinyl.
Here's what a British reviewer said: "If the new mix and stereophonics were equally laudatory, this album would be a watershed event. Sadly, this is where the younger Martin fails us. He boosted all of the vocals-as well as certain instruments-to the point where they’re right in your face. And there’s no letup. So rather than the Beatles’ carefully-plotted journey through emotional highs and lows, Martin gives us an album that’s unremittingly aggressive. Rather than inviting you into a fascinating world, as even the lousiest-sounding predecessors did, the new edition pushes you away. Individual songs suffer, too. For instance, on “She’s Leaving Home” McCartney seems more pissed off than ruefully contemplative. Similarly, the lead guitar on the title track morphs from a knife-edged accent to something downright menacing. Both of these new elements are incongruous with the emotional makeup of their respective songs. I also take issue with some of Martin’s stereophonic choices. Why, for example, should the first three notes of the harpsichord theme that introduces “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” be placed in the left channel, while the fourth (and others) find themselves in the right? The effect not only comes across as arbitrary, it distracts from the musical line."
I bought the 2017 mix and I agree Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds does sounded a bit off, the pitch sounds a bit low, I don’t know why but I think it’s because they used it in the Yellow Submarine movie.
Thank you for making this review. I was hesitant on whether getting Sgt. Pepper's 2009 remaster or the 50th remix (I don't own a turntable). You should do Magical Mystery Tour sometime this year, as MMT is a companion for SPLHCB.
I really wish they would've made a new mono mix from the original tapes. Regardless of the fidelity, hearing pre-Yellow Submarine Beatles in stereo doesn't feel right. I know you could argue "Well, if you want to be a purist, then just be as pure as possible and listen to the million generations deep master tapes." No. I always love when the original camera negative for a classic film is drug out and scanned with modern equipment, to get the most pure and high fidelity source possible. It's the same thing here. As long as you keep it faithful to the original, and follow the original notes, then I would pay large sums of money to hear a remastered mono mix. Folding down the new stereo causes phase problems.
Yes. They went back to the original master tapes, not the original pre-bounced stems like for this release. Not to mention that vinyl is mastered terribly. Playing it on a stereo turntable creates awful distortion. Here's a sample of the isolated side information. drive.google.com/file/d/0B7jikbgSgffHZWNULW8wbTQwVEE0S2NvMFZ5MUtWbGRHS09R
The drums sound incredible on Good Morning, Good Morning. I've always thought it sounds like Paul's singing through cotton wool during his bit on A Day in the Life and I was hoping that it would sound a bit brighter on the 2017 remix. But no, it was left as it is. I do think John' s dream bit immediately after has a lot more oomph. Also I agree with Ian MacDonald in Revolution in the Head when he says that Lucy was rather shoddily recorded. They were pushing the limits and I think Lucy suffered a bit. I was hoping John's vocal would be higher up in the mix but it was left as it was and that the bottom end would be a bit fatter but it still sounds a bit thin. My ears were spoilt with Lucy though as I heard Elton John's version first.
I think for all it’s faults the UK ‘67’ mono mix is the real only one to own. That being said the UK ‘67’ Stereo mix is a must own as well but it competes with the 2017 mix as the best. What the he’ll you should own all three. However the ultimate lp to own is according to lots of consumer is KIND OF BLUE BY MILES DAVIS!
My copy is the US release on Capitol, and it’s a must have for every fan. The Capitol US release is way better than the 2017 Giles Martin remix version, and the previous remixes from 2012 and 2009.
The 2017 mix has more in common with the original mono mix than any of the stereos mixes. That's a good thing.
I love the 2017 stereo remix never liked the way the original stereo mix had the drums squished and hard panned on either the left or right channel Giles did a really good job on this one imo
@@gregoryirwin263I never like the 2017 Giles remix of this album. The original Capitol US stereo version is the best sounding version of them all.
It has been pointed out that my 1967 pressing is actually a mono copy. Also, I did my best to include the longest samples I could. This was my third upload attempt as TH-cam kept blocking the previous videos on copyright grounds.

I thought I noticed that, but it didn't really affect the overall experience or the comparative analysis. It's a great post, and I appreciate you clarifying that point here.
did you ever listen to the inner groove after a day in the life on any of them?
Joseph Murrieta I own the 2017 copy. Disc one side one is like any normal record. Disc one side two does have the locking groove with the weird "never have you any other way" nonsensical words. Disc two has a locking groove on both sides but no audio on those. I hope that helps.

Wow! I am honored. Thank you so much for the kind shout out! You actually beat me to the punch on this one and I am kind of glad you did. Thank you Paul! I think I have '68 US pressing but that's in bad shape too. It's hard to find them in good condition. I would still love to hear your thoughts
Will you make a Let it be vs Let it Be Naked?
at some point
I can’t wait.
One of the most important things about this stereo mix, is that they’re proper stereo mix’s, of the Beatles original Mono mix, so the speed difference on tracks like She’s leaving home is apparent with it’s beautiful stereo
now I want every Beatles album to get the Giles treatment! unbelievable mix, and a really great review from one of my favorite channels!
2017 Lucy has been slowed down to match the mono. She's Leaving Home has been sped up to match the mono version.
The Capitol US original has “Lucy” on there is a bit normal than the 2017 version which is pitched a little bit down.
Good Morning Good Morning kicks ass on the 2017 mix, it's just in your face awesome!!!
Well done.
I hope that they do a similar stereo mix for the White Album's 50th Anniversary!
We need to hear the 27 minute version of helter skelter
Hopefully they do one for magical mystery tour this year being that it was released in 68... that would be fucking amazing!
Zach Jira I only hope they lock Giles Martin up before he does anymore damage
Your record appears to be slightly warped, That's why some songs sound funny
My 2017 stereo mix of sgt pepper came today!
My first Beatles vinyl and I can't wait to play it
Keep the Beatle videos coming! Thanks!
Throughout the years I've listened to Sg Pepper many times ...the best mix of all is in my mind .
Consistently great reviews . Thank you !
More info:
Overall, using the original pristine tapes (not the mixed tapes used for all previous versions) in 2017 enabled better quality to be pulled from the tapes than in 1967.
Sorry you've been struggling with fair use man,
I've been hesitant on getting the 50th anniversary edition, mainly because the price of the 50th anniversary edition but, I hope at one point I can sit down and listen to it and make a decision then, but I have high hopes since I was able to get the remastered version of Pennylane/Strawberry Fields Forever on record store day and was blown away.
For the most part, I agree with what you've said about the new remix. I do love Lucy though. It sounds much better in headphones. You are so right about the spacial awareness of the mix of the album, and Lucy shows this when listening through headphones..
Giles really has captured the mood and intent of the album in his remix.
Giles Martin did a great job on this edition. Thanks for this video
I really hope that they eventually have all the albums remixed.
LSD is meant to sound more like the original mono but sound a bit cleaner.
These reviews are just brilliant. Thx for all what you do:)
you have a great ear.
i agree: cleaner and crisper only brings greater appreciation of their (often underappreciated) musicianship. and yet, the cacophony of mr kite actually benefited by 1967's muddy swirls.
Thanks for doing this review! I appreciate you guys listening. I agree about the 2012 mixes, WAY too much muddiness.
My takeaway from the 2017 mix: Right channel has been opened all the way up. The other pressings, is left channel heavy IMO.
The 2012 "mix" was NOT a remix. It is the ORIGINAL 1967 STEREO MIX from the 2009 remasters ALSO used to cut the 2012 vinyl reissues. Do your homework.
I'm insanely jealous of your vinyl collections, man. Amazing.
2017 is my go to now, hanging on to my mono reissue too.
I am most familiar with the introduction of Sgt Peppers by CD, so, even through headphones connected to TH-cam, I can still feel the difference in experience as if switching shoes with sandals. Thanks for the review.
I just got a 1978 UK stereo copy that sounds really nice. The runout groove on this pressing is literally just a split second of sound though.
I actually really enjoy all the remixes and remasters that are coming out these days of classic albums in many cases they make these old records sound three dimensional and breathe new life into them its interesting to listen to something that you thought you knew inside and out and realize that there is so much more that has been hiding in those songs that you never heard or noticed before
Thank you for your insightful view. I will get the new 2017 version and explore.
You can NEVER have enough Sgt. Pepper's albums! Love your videos!
I love this mix, but one thing that stood out to me between this and the 1967 pressing... is the amount of colour on the cover.
I'm a Beatles freak. I love your reviews. You the man.
thank you
I've got the 2017 but I just picked up a near mint copy of 1971 Apple stereo pressing and it sounds amazing, dynamics and clarity at least equal the 2017 based on my initial listening, although I need to do a consecutive listen through the whole album of both pressings.
Still got the 1987 LP. Saved up, costing me £5-99. Played it continuosly. Still played it. Wouldn't mind getting the 2017 version.
I think I fell in love with how you loved this new mix.
I have the 2017 mix on picture disc and it looks and sounds amazing
Perfect video..thanks 🙂 I heard for the original stereo 1967 mix, George Martin and the Beatles left it to the engineers to do it. They were only concerned with the mono version
The cacophonous part in Mr Kite is pretty interesting. Their engineer cut up a bunch of tapes of carnival music and then randomly pieced them back together for the song. I think it's awesome being able to hear it more clearly.
I believe George Martin asked eng Geoff Emerick to cut the tape up but he made to do this several times before they got the sound they wanted..
Excellent. My only complaint was that they speeded up She's Leaving Home.
Awesome as usual, VR.
Agree. Surprised you didn’t mention “She’s Leaving Home”. To me it benefits the most now that it is speed corrected.
missed that one
Just from the brief sample, I'd say i agree with 2017 Within/Without You.
I have the mono version LP that I bought years ago in the dollar bin.
Yeah. The remix from giles martin is absolutly A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
Not a fan of the Giles Martin remixes, but the original US Capitol version is way better than the 2017 remixes.
Once again another great upload
Would be interesting to see a comparison between the new 2017 stereo mix and the 2014 mono reissue
I agree the new stereo mix has a much broader sound to it, the 2014 surprisingly punches hard and sounds so much better than the 2012 stereo
Keep spinning and shaking those cocktails.
That's a great idea, I gotta save up for that boxed set
you have the box set now! waiting for the review
I have a 1980s stereo pressing and to be quite honest I think it's the best one for me. Compared to the others, it's so cheap and still retains the great sound.
Agreed, and the 2014 mono is the best in its class. Lucky for me I found one at half price books for only $30 in NM!
The label on your 1967 pressing doesn't have stereo on label which means it's mono
Wow, how did I miss that?! Now I feel like an idiot ;) thank you for pointing that out.
I just double checked it and William is correct, totally my bad. I got too excited and didn't read my copy
NORMALIZATION OF IGNORANCE harsh but I guess you could be right, it's a production team and he's the host.
I love your shirt and tie combo. Those fat ties are awesome!!
It would be cool if you could review Selling England by the Pound by Genesis :D
Agreed! An Early Genesis treatment by Vinyl Rewind would be awesome!
If you have a 7.1 surround sound setup in multistereo mode you can get the best stereo effect from your speakers.
I hope you do a stereo comparison of the White Album as well! Me personally I don't like newer editions because that's not how they were mixed originally, and I like to hear the album's the way the Beatles themselves put them out. But that's just me. But I appreciate what you did on this and I am a audiophile so I love it!
Love the 2017 remix of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - it sounds a little impressionistic - vague and not clearly defined. Mr Kite is the same.
I love the new reissue remix. It really. It Is the mix that should have been. Wish the other compact discs mixes from the boxset were released on vinyl.
Awesome album. ❤
If you haven't seen the Sgt. Pepper movie, you really should. It's great.
Only bits and pieces
your kidding right
Here's what a British reviewer said: "If the new mix and stereophonics were equally laudatory, this album would be a watershed event.
So you would want something different that was they did in 2014?
Yes. They went back to the original master tapes, not the original pre-bounced stems like for this release. Not to mention that vinyl is mastered terribly. Playing it on a stereo turntable creates awful distortion. Here's a sample of the isolated side information.

thanks very much for these videos. I really appreciate this.
Being for the benefit of mr kite in the 1967 was more detailed than 2017 and I think I like that it’s much more detailed
I must be sure to get this!
I heard that she’s leaving home got sped up and I think what Giles did in the stereo mix was recreated what they did in the mono
Giles Martin needs to remix a 50th anniversary release for Magical Mystery Tour this year! (1968-2018)
Mystery Tour came out in 1967
Really professional and helpful video, thanks.
