The new Giles Martin remix blows every other version out of the water as it's been done perfectly & seamless & although great before it's now been taken to another level.... A good Beatles album is now stunning.

All the other mixes Giles has done have been hit and miss, which I think is the best anyone could hope for. But he FIXED this record. It has a special place in my heart as my first album, but the bad production ultimately made me abandon the album and I stopped listening to it for years. Just comparing the two latest versions of Across the Universe tells you everything you need to know. I honestly think this is what the album was meant to be.

For me, it was E, the MoFi mix, that won hands down, though the 2021 mix was a close second. I listened using my large stereo system speakers, which would be the way I would listen to the album anyway. Being a “vinyl geekette” (!!!) myself, I listen to almost all my music on vinyl. So that’s what makes the most sense to me, how it sounds through stereo system speakers.

Hey man. While we're all on the subject of The Beatles, how's about doing a video discussing the Beatles US debut LP, "Introducing... The Beatles." It's one of the most bootlegged albums of all time, and true copies are very hard to find, making them very expensive. It's a complicated album to tell apart the real copies from the fakes.

  • @phillippope4360
    @phillippope4360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Really love these comparisons. From the beginning, "D" had a 3D quality that seem to shout "remix." While I initially liked "E" for the first few tracks because of a perceived openness to the tracks, the treble boost does feel unnatural on many of the tracks. I think the overall winner is "A." "A" is clear, detailed and warm. It wasn't revelatory by any means. It didn't knock me out, but it did present the album with natural vocals, good depth in the soundstage, and a pleasing midrange. Overall I think that's why the UK pressings stand out as consistently the best pressings across the whole canon of Beatles albums. The new remix is fun, and I think Giles and his team did a wonderful job updating an album to make it more accessible for the casual listener. It would be fun to see how a -2U original pressing would stand up to the new remix.

I like the 2021 the best. All of the Beatles Mo-Fi releases have boosted top end. The 1970 US press always sounded thin. The 2012 quality varies according to where it was pressed; the Optimal (German) pressed 2012s generally sound decent but the US pressed 2012s generally do not. If you can afford it - get the new box set on vinyl - it's worth it! :)

The kind of dirty-sounding distortion on B actually sounds really good on those electric guitar-driven rooftop tracks like "Dig A Pony" and "I've Got A Feeling." It suits that kind of crunch so well you can sell it as "not a bug, but a feature."

  • @langundovitale1305

D and E were my favorites. Both were clear, and clean sounding, and I picked up a lot more detail with both.
A and C were what I'd say "average", with A being slightly better on most of the tracks.
B was my least favorite. It sounded lifeless, dull, and compressed as hell.

Let It Be has always been the Beatles album I pass over the most, opting to either listen to a mix of Naked versions and the included songs on the 1967-1970 and 1 compilations. The new mix, especially in 5.1, is a revelation. I'm actually enjoying the album for the first time. In fact, it's the second remix I've listened to this year that transformed my opinion of an album, with the other being the 2019 remix of Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

I could tell from the first sample that "D" was the new mix. I'm really enjoying it. I think Giles and Sam really hit the right spot this time. Listen to that kick drum on "Get Back" for example, that's barely audible on the original mix - and yet the track sounds "the same" as a whole. That's how you do it! It's my go to version of the album now.

So much detail is revealed after some of the bounced down tracks are unpicked. I'm surprised that the 2021 release went down so badly... my CD version sounds pretty good to ears on headphones. The 2012 sounds more muffled here, as if they didn’t remove those low mids out of the way, but it has better bass than the original us. It’s weird because at some moments, it doesn’t differ that much from the mobile fidelity one, but at times, it sounds like a blanket was put on the speakers. Mofi to me sounded the best. But it’s a tough one, the new mix is pretty awesome too. That’s not how I remember my 2012 EU pressing, which to my ears, has always sounded very open... but I might be wrong.

Vinyl Geek, you have one of the most interesting R&R, or BEATLE channels there is. but these pressing comparisons drive me a little crazy. I think it does serve a purpose, tho. it also makes me wonder why so many different pressings are even done. I thought when I bought CD's from the '09 re-masters, it was the end of it. I was wrong, I guess. too bad you can't have Paul on to study these w/ you. that's a compliment BTW, as anyone who could sit down w/ Paul and talk pressings, is intelligent. right now, I'm going to watch part 3 of 'GET BACK' .BEATLE fans have Christmas early .have a good Holiday weekend.

Great video. The sound clips were short, but I think you made up for it by providing many clips to hear and compare which was very helpful. The only downside was that it was difficult to hear how the clips translate as a whole which I understand you could not do for copyright reasons. I think it would be helpful if you did a tutorial on "how to listen" and compare pressings for another album without copyright limits. While a youtube playback is limited...I think you captured the core basics of sound quality. The more educated listeners are...will only push record companies to produce better quality pressings.

What a great way of illustrating the various approaches. This was an awesome video. Five stars up!
It was super clear in my mind that the new pressing is miles ahead; never thought I'd feel like that because when I put on the new pressing in CD format I have to confess that I didn't think it was much better! There is so much depth to it. I thought the worst was the 1970 pressing which seemed to over-state the treble. I thought the 1986 pressing was second best.
Across The Universe was recorded at Abbey Road.

For me it's a big toss up between the D & E. Both to my ears have a great rich sound. In most of parts that were sampled. Certainly with some of the lows E, can fall just a little flat. Will D, they tend to sound very rich and layered pretty well. When situations such as strings start to appear. I was actually pretty astounded to find that D was the new 2021 mix. While the E, I could definitely tell from a mile away that it was the Mobile Fidelity mix. Mobile Fidelity tends have a particular sound in their mixes. That I think can be very warm and inviting to your ears. But like mentioned before. At times when there is a little to much going on. It can sometimes sound like the mix gets a bit overwhelmed. And a tad a bit of detail gets lost. Overall I can say the new mix is great and a much better fitting than the 2012 mix.

A & especially C sounded very veiled. I don't know what to think about the MoFi.. All I know was it didn't sound great. 2021 is probably the winner IMHO. More bass and more detailed on the majority. Thanks for the shootout! 👍

The only one I was able to identify without a doubt was the 1970's pressing because I've been listening to that since I was a kid. I also liked D when it was played. You are not wrong about the MoFi sounding inferior to the others, a lot of people have agreed with you. Additionally MoFi is expensive because of the brand and scarcity. Nice video. Thanks. As a minor correction, four different sources. Across the Universe was at Abbey Road 1968, Rooftop 1969, Apple Studios 1969 and I Me Mine at Abbey Road on January 1970. This was a great approach to the test. No method is perfect. In this case, I had a hard time focusing as much because I’m better at close listening with my eyes shut. Randomizing the order makes that impossible. Still, it was a pretty clear result for me.

I knew the 2012 press wasn't great but it got smoked here. The new mix is really middle of the road, some songs are better and some are average but it doesn't seem like a "bad" pressing overall if you can't afford a mofi or a first pressing.

    A - sounds natural
B - a little lift in the mids
    C - sounds weak
D - clean and has a slightly different feel because of the repositioning of some elements.
    E - sounds like C but louder.
I was mixing up the mofi and the 2012 because of the levels. My go to would be A though (maybe B), and once in a while D.

I mostly preferred how bright B is but it got a bit grainy and difficult at times.. I kinda felt I could hear the LP strain.. E was also kinda sibilant with all the hihats but it also brought out a lot of details. D was probably the most consistent but also at times the mud on the vocals can be annoying... I wouldn't be surprised if E was based on the B track.. I probably would like owning B because E is too much at times, though D has less flaws so I'm going to make a guess that was the digital master. This is all bit knowing which was which
EDIT: so I actually preferred the 70 US pressing.. people were right about those mofis being super bright and I was correct in assuming that B was an old pretty worn down one.. I just didn't really care for the master of 2021 as much and too be 80s and 2012 were basically invisible because they were nothing. 2021 is mostly just because weird new changes to how vocals are put

What is with digital mastering getting dinged? Nearly all music since the mid-80s has been recorded and or mixed digitally.

is your 2012 press made in Germany or Canada? the North American releases were a bit bad and imports from Europe (German pressings) are a lot better. Either way, I really love the sound of the 2021 mix and the Mofi press.

How does one tell? I have 2 copies of the Stereo Box Set vinyl, a.) one is still in the shrink-wrap b.) the other I played a bit then had to move and boxed up my stereo system planning to do some listening tonight when i hook everything up. I sure hope I didn't get a fake counterfeit copy hoping 1 out of these 2 are legit. But this is a beef I have with record companies, they do not tell you where they were pressed four some reason!?? You would think if they made quality products, they'd like to brag a bit.

Interesting comparison. I own a copy of the 2021 pressing, and I agree that it doesn't seem to be mind-blowing, but it just subtly enhances the original release. However, after watching the Peter Jackson "Get Back" documentary, I'm very interested in hearing the complete songs as they appeared in the film, without any orchestration. From watching the film, it seems that's how the album was intended to be released.
