hi Alex. Black Magic Design should be paying you for your tutorials. This was amazing. Question: I am a bit nervous about upgrading to a Beta. Should I wait for the full release or go ahead now? Any issues with downloading now?
Hey Hey! Thanks as always :) If you're reliant on Resolve for work etc, I'd hold fire for another release or two. It's not terrible at all but I have had a few more crashes than usual. Saying that though, this video was recorded and edited with 18. The Magic Masks used did a few weird things but overall, wasn't too bad.
If you don't need it for work, I would upgrade so you can report any issues you have to BMD. They have a subforum dedicated to the 18 beta. I actually had an issue with my Intel integrate graphics (yeah, I know! I'm trying to get an RTX 3060ti but all cards close to list price are still not available. 😢) which caused constant crashes and they gave me a temporary fix within a day or two and then fixed it completely in beta2. No more crashes at all since then. The more people using the beta and reporting any issues they find the more stable the final release will be. If you do upgrade, make sure to back everything up first. I saw a comment from someone at BMD on the forum to backup both the database and export individual projects too (you can do that from the Project Manager, right-click each project and export). I did both a database backup and individual project backup just to be safe. I've seen many tech channels doing videos about how graphics cards finally back in stock at list price (or close to it), but the RTX 3060ti is being very stubborn. 😒 That's the one I'm waiting for because it seems to offer great performance for the price.
When fixing an issue and adding a red line, it works for me for only one frame although I re-track from that frame on just like you showed in the video. I find myself having to add a line every frame... What am I doing wrong? Did anyone else encounter this?
Thanks Brother, Been waiting for this...In your last Coffee example, Node thumbnail is not showing in color page. Happend to me few times, why? and what is the Solution? Thank you...
Amazing tool but...they want us to do composites outside of Fusion now...a lot of stuff doesn't make sense with the pages stuff and never has. This is of course awesome to to have on the color page for grading but of course we want it in Fusion as well.
It is a weird decision not to have it within the Fusion page as well, I totally agree dude! I hope they impliment a Fusion version, ideally with some finer controls over the masking too. It's still magic though 😄
Great tutorial! Magic Mask works great on short clips. But when I tried to put it on a longer video (30 minutes) and make edits/cuts, the screen goes black. I don't know how to fix this. Do you have any ideas? I hope I don't have to go into every single edited clip on this longer timeline and put individual masks? That's so painful, lol!
Is there a way to add a simple outline to a masked item without going into fusion? It seems like it would be easy but I cannot find the right effect to apply that will achieve this.
Great tutorial. I have yet to upgrade to 18. I’ll be doing it soon, I was just waiting to see if there were any problems with it. So far, from what I see, it seems pretty stable. Cheers mate
Hi mate I recently bought Studio so am now trying Magic Mask for first time - struggling a bit though as its a very busy background, and it keeps losing the hair. I'll check manual as you suggested, and persist. Cheers mate.
Thanks for this tutorial Alex! How did you get the monkey toilet bowl effect in the beginning??? Every time I mask something and then attempt to apply a zoom and rotation to it afterwards the mask tracking is lost and I get nowhere.
Meh maybe but not really. Yes it can work, but it's far far more intensive and less accurate than green screening. For a quick simple shot it could work though. Just not for full length talking vids etc.
I tried making a magic mask for a picture, but when I try to track it to all the frames, it only does the frame I made it on. It's making me go mad, pls help
I do real estate Videos and get blown out windows alot. so would you be able to mask the windows so that you can color grade them seperate from the rest of the room. I see no Person on youtube trying this or doing a tutorial . Do you think this could work? i tried but i get flickering at some spots of the mask
Wait, you've got a 3090? I wonder how your editing performance compares with a good M1 Ultra in a Mac Mini... This is very cool but is 18 stable yet? Can I do the same in 17?
I would like to find out myself but have no need for the Ultra so can't justify dropping the cash! It's generally pretty stable honestly, I've had a few crashes (more than I was getting in 17 tbh) but i've still been able to get work done! :)

Did anyone else encounter this?
love your videos, and your accent ! where are you from?
Thanks Brother, Been waiting for this...In your last Coffee example, Node thumbnail is not showing in color page. Happend to me few times, why? and what is the Solution? Thank you...
Hey Sesh! Oh yeah, honestly I hadn't even noticed ha! I don't know, I'll look into it.
@@MrAlexTech Thanks Brother, Love your Videos...
Cool!!
The Magic mask page is now 3009 in the 18.5 manual.
It's been a year ... so .... my question .... what computer system you recommend nowadays ? Which Nvidia ?
Thank you!
Cheers mate
This is great.
Does the magic mask work as a substitute for green screen?! Thanks for all your work Mr Alex!
Meh maybe but not really. Yes it can work, but it's far far more intensive and less accurate than green screening.
For a quick simple shot it could work though. Just not for full length talking vids etc.
Whattttt! 10 seconds in, I had to pause the video and brace myself...
