It’s beyond a simple rhetorical question. It’s deliberate psychological manipulation. They stick something false into a question to get the “victim” to accept it as they consider the question as a whole. Like if I asked “why do they put arsenic in jellybeans when it doesn’t do anything for the flavor and it isn’t a preservative?”
One might quickly fact check me on if it’s a preservative, but if I have a cult following like most these guys do, they’re going to leave my statement of fact alone long enough for me to move on to a different topic while my manipulative statement stays with them.
Now next time the topic of jellybeans comes up, they’ll be ready to tell people there’s arsenic in jellybeans. I can use that to my advantage if I get enough people repeating it. People like being in a group with inside information and others who agree with them. I could probably even ask for donations so I could buy jellybeans and go on a trip to the jellybean factory. . . to expose them of course.

It's a very interesting rhetorical device that's everywhere when you know about it where someone asks questions, pauses, and pretends that that means nobody could provide an answer. Even though they're making a video alone in their bedroom. Surprisingly effective.

The reason why commercial flights directly over the poles are so uncommon is two-fold: 1) harsh, sparsely inhabited climate/terrain. If a plane is forced to make a crash landing, the chances of timely rescue and recovery are very rare. At least over the ocean, you have common shipping lanes. 2) The interference in compasses caused by the magnetic poles makes navigation risky because if your GPS goes down and your compass starts going wonky, you're not gonna have a good time.

Reason they don’t fly *directly* over the South Pole is there are no normal airports in Antarctica, so if a plane has issues they can’t land there in an emergency. They basically have to take the shortest path possible, they can’t detour over most of Antarctica. If you wanted to charter a flight directly over the South Pole, you would have to get an airplane equipped to land there and a pilot specially trained for it. In 1979 an Air New Zealand passenger aircraft which was doing a sightseeing trip over Antarctica crashed into Mount Erebus, killing all 257 passengers and crew. Even if there had been survivors from the initial crash they would very likely have died before any significant help could arrive.

    • @Swordsman1425

Half As Interesting did a video on it, and basically yes. That, and flying over Antarctica would put you too far away from the nearest serviceable airport for most passenger planes to make a diversion in case of some emergency or another. Most planes are rated to be able to fly up to 180 miles from the nearest airport, but that effectively excludes all of Antarctica. And also also, there just isn't much demand for flights that would need to go over Antarctica to begin with; most human beings reside in the north pole, so most flights happen there to begin with, and the only flights that go close are the flights between Sydney and Johanesburg and Sydney and Santiago, that only sometimes skirt the edge of Antarctica.
Antarctic sightseeing planes are different because they have modifications that allow them to land on runways made of ice and are much, much smaller. But you can still go on them if you have the money.

While it’s technically not illegal to fly over the South Pole, airliners are restricted to flights a certain timeframe from a suitable landing site. This is called ETOPS. Essentially twin engine aircraft are limited to say 270 minutes from a suitable landing site. This changes for each aircraft. That is why commercial flights do not cross the South Pole, and rarely cross the Antarctic land mass.
This does not apply to military and special charter flights to Antarctica, as the pilots must be certified to land on ice runways and carry enough fuel to return to their origin if they are unable to land in Antarctica.

When I was at the South Pole in the summer of 07-08 a new model Airbus surprised us by flying overhead on a round-the-world shakedown cruise. No one had warned us so we weren't expecting it.
They don't normally fly airliners over Antarctica because regulations require emergency airfields every so often and only a couple airfields in Antarctica even come close to qualifying, but it certainly is not illegal.
