  • We venture to the North Slope of the Brooks Range on the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, in a search to harvest 2 bull caribou. In this episode we do a lot of flying, even more driving and finally get eyes on caribou! Boots are on the ground and arrows are flying! #mathewsarchery #badlandsgear #caribou #hunting #diy #alaska

Amazing how I'll be looking at some fascinating desolate place in Google Maps, blurry photos last updated in 2011, and a quick search on youtube finds the perfect underrated video covering it. Awesome stuff, cheers from south america

I think we really need to do a better job as a community to real in our range to what would be considered ethical. If that first shot was not too high, it was stated to be too far back as well. If you miss on both axis, either there should be a mechanical explanation, or an ethical reassessment. It is a great video and I am constantly working through my own perspective dilemmas on what is ethical and what is not, but the hunting community is really pushing the envelope on range, without the necessary dialogue on ethics.

For starters, you aren’t wrong. But as far as this video goes and trip in general I’ll say that there are multiple factors that plagued accuracy with a bow. First, I had some issues with my release and sight. Many know after traveling things can happen and you also saw us checking equipment. I made an adjustment at that point and it just wasn’t right. The other factors were environmental. With the wind being what it was it was a shot I was comfortable with in practice and similar conditions but whether it was a broadhead partially opening etc. I’m just not sure. The arrow didn’t go where I thought it would. The important thing is that I was prepared for that range and frequently shoot those ranges. Between multiple TAC events a year and being a member of an archery club where I shoot 80+ frequently, I feel comfortable… that’s also animal specific for me.

@@theboundaryparadox It's probably also worth noting that those action cameras make animals appear much further away than they are. Over the years I have developed a bit of a personal constitution that if I miss or wound an animal, even if I kill an animal quickly but the shot placement wasn't what I wanted; it was my fault. At the end of the day, it can only be our fault. Control what you can. I didn't get to this conservative mindset on my personal views of ethical shots because I always made good ones, but rather because I have, like most of us, made a bad shot or two in my time. Again, amazing video! I'm just really in a phase of being extra critical of shots now that the long distance trend with bows and rifles has gained so much popularity.
