  • August 20223 I had hunted the Dalton highway / alaskan haul road for caribou with my bow and rifle. After three days of failed stalks bow hunting we took a airboat ride to get outside the 5 mile archery only corridor to hunt with rifles. This is how the hunt went down, I normally film with a Sony Mirrorless camera and this totally gone now, so this was purely filmed with my iphone 14 pro. Until next time. Enjoy yall.

Alaska looks so beautiful. Glad you were able to do this and so proud of you for getting a Caribou! I know you worked hard for it!

I know your trips already came and gone, but tips for your water system: Just grab a SmartWater bottle, your sawyer filter fits directly onto that because the threads align. You can get the larger bottle, and then you're not waiting for your system to gravity filter. You just have your dirty water bag, then pour directly into your smartwater and drink off the filter all day. I'm not saying it's the best method but after multiple Long Distance trails (AT, PCT, Resurrection, Johnson) that seems to be the standard.

I’ve done that. Some times when I want to shave weight I take the smart water bottle too. But when I drink nasty water from a wallow, I like to have a Nalgene I can fit a steri pen in just in case.

Thank you sir. Montana for elk and mule deer but it’s lottery. But I draw they have a longer hunting seasons than other states that are forgiving for my work schedule.

When you do it again, do you bring the sled again? Is there a better tool?

    • @DanielGuillette

No sled. In some instances the sled worked but too often it would get hung up in the tussics. Perhaps a tarp style sled would work better as it won’t have the tub like shape that got hung up, I’ve seen a video a few people used tarp sleds to hike in 5 miles and haul meat the 5 miles back.
For me, in the end a meat shelf pack and a pair of trekking poles worked much better.
A few other things I’d bring on my next trip are: Waders. And a usb powered boot dryer. And maybe even a tent stove to have some heat to dry clothes / boots.

Nice, who did you use for boat rental?

Was renting the airboat trip to get in the 5 mile minimum worth it? How warm was it? What time of the year did you go? Early august late? Or September? Any grizzlies? Man I’m planning a trip. How’d you get meat back dry ice in a meat box? Tell me your secrets 😂

    • @DanielGuillette

Yes, the airboat to exit the 5 mile boundary was worth it. Had we not stayed out all night in the tundra I think we all could had killed.
It was 20-65 degrees, and rained nearly every day and night. Bring good waterproof rain suit like kuiu, sitka, first lite, or military surplus gore Tex. I would also take waders, two pairs of boots, crocks, and a boot dryer!
      We went August 16-25th.
We saw two grizzlies and two wolves.
In the end of the video I showed how I prepped the meat to fly, we rented an Airbnb and I vacuum sealed it and froze it in the freezer they had in the place. Furbanks Fur Tannery also is a place you can cut, seal, and freeze your meat and store frozen until you fly. I didn’t use dry ice, as long as it’s frozen solid it’ll stay frozen. Even in a duffle bag it’ll fly, just wrap it with a few layers of newspaper and put in a few contractor trash bags.
