I use mine like a panini press for campfire grilled sandwiches. My go to is sourdough with Brie and sliced pears and cream cheese and lox with rye bread.
Hi Amanda! Thank you for this video. Really love the omlette and hashbrown breakfast! Also never thought about putting brownie batter in the pie iron. Will definitely have to try! Any chance your pie iron ebook will be available again sometime? Would love to purchase. Thanks for considering.
Great video. I use mine to make 'pizza sandwiches '. Butter 2 pieces of bread, put pepperoni, mozzarella, and pizza sauce between the bread (butter side out). Place sandwich in iron and cook. They are my family's favorite when we are car camping.
Thanks for making this video. We used a cooking iron several years ago on one camping trip. It was SUCH a disaster and I never ever wanted to use them again! But of course, we didn't use butter and everything stuck to it AND the food was undercooked! Here's to 2nd chances because it has been sitting in our garage collecting dust!
We went camping this weekend and made some delicious breakfast using these cooking irons. Pre-heating the cooking irons and using a generous amount of butter was key! We are definitely making the pizza pockets on our next go. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️
What about the hot dog cooking irons? I have two of them, a two dog that I bought and a three dog that I found at a remote camp site. They cook almost any kind of sausage better than any other method.
Thanks for spreading the word! I've always been a big fan. Now if you'll excuse me, now I have to go add "cooking iron" to the keyword tags on my videos. 😆
The crunch on that pizza pocket was YUM!!! You have the best car camping videos on YT! We have a travel trailer that we take camping, but I still enjoy your videos so much. Happy Fall! 🤎
... Seems like there ought to be a movie made from this ... "The Woman With a Big Iron on Her Hip" .... Definitely a different piece of camp gear .. I've seen them at outfitters ,, but in over 50 years in the brush and backcountry ,, NEVER have seen anyone bring one or use one ... you really are a pioneer in showing the world of it's existence but a cookbook too ?? .. 👍 Amazing video Amanda ..
Will coconut oil work in place of butter? My sister has a dairy allergy and we're going camping this summer, stumbled upon your channel, and can't get enough of all your advice, recipes, and tricks
Oooh love all the delicious food you made with the cooking iron here! I was contemplating getting a cooking iron and yep...this video convinced me!! 😍 Just got my first cast iron skillet, trying it out ☺️
I have the big one. I like to get sliced sourdough round because the slices fit the big Iron. I make a single grilled cheese and cut it in half for me and my daughter. Sometimes we have that for breakfast.... shh camping rules mom don't know. 😊
we used to call those 'pie irons' and what came out were called 'hobo pies' try phyllo dough and canned beef stew...yummy, or just PB n J sammies toasted in the iron, or just add all the S'Mores stuff encapsulated in graham crackers.... you can use them at home in your yard/garden fire pit too....
Thank you Amanda I really enjoy your content. I think I will end up getting one of those cooking irons. Have you heard of fry bake pans I bought one and it’s a little pricey but I think it will be fun for back packing. I wonder if you would like to do any content on one. It is light weight and you can put coals on the lid or build a stick fire on the lid.
I started using my pie irons a while ago making bannock or fry bread with great results. Just today I made a batch using whole wheat flower and adding honey to the mix after a quick cook I let the bannock cool a bit then smeared some home made blueberry jam on it. Pure perfection. There are so many different combinations you can use for your bannock recipes just let your creative mind take over. Enjoy your cooking irons
I’ve Been eyeing the snow peak sandwich maker. Sorta like a panini / pie iron. I’m thinking Ruben’s or Banh mi’s or Korean Toasts.😊😅 my family had little money we would use butter, white bread and favorite pie filling for campfire pies.
We call those "mountain pie makers". Eggs are so good in them and bread with pie filling is a popular choice here. Pizza toppings inside bread is my favorite!
I left mine at a campsite and I'm still kicking myself! Hopefully it's in a good home, that's the one campsite I seem to forget things at and last time they used my cast iron grill for years haha
When cooking with the cooking iron do you have to flip it to cook other side? You didn’t show that with any of the recipes you made in the video? Thanks much! 😊
As an Aussie…. It’s a must have when camping a Jaffle iron. They are the best similar to your one, so so good - my favourite is baked bean and cheese jaffle (White bread) and butter of course it’s delish 😊
CampMaid makes great knock-offs, but I prefer to buy USA-made items. The Rome brands is awesome and their products are made to last. The cast iron won’t crack, they are also already seasoned and I’ve actually used them at home on my gas stove and grill. Buy Made In The USA!!!
Where did you get the single square one? Or can you cook two different things at once in the double? Start the hash browns and once you flip add the eggs for an omelet? I don't know but I accidentally ordered the single in the link and it's round, definitely need the square for all those sandwich recipes!
OMG I’ve been using cooking irons since I was a Girl Scout but I’ve never done BROWNIES!!! Definitely doing this on our next trip. Last weekend it dropped to 30 degrees brownies would have been perfect wish I’d seen this first 😂
I usually buy pre-made dough and store it in the cooler. Then about 30 minutes before I want to cook, I will take the dough out and let it warm up to room temp so it's easier to shape.
I asked for my double last Christmas and tried it out over the fire, not a very good first attempt, scorched beyond eating. I see you use a grill to cook it over the fire and that may have been my error. So It's not like a dutch oven and needs the distance as a buffer? Wondering how you tell when food is finished cooking?
I have a dumb question. Can you only use it over a fire? A lot of times I go camping to a more desert type place where you can't have a fire, just a stove. These do look cool. I ended up not liking the griddle I bought, it's hard to clean.
There are 31 ideas in the ebook and at least 20 of them don't have any meat. A lot of the recipes do have dairy, butter, and/or eggs though. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm SO excited to share my love of the cooking iron in this video! Do you have one? There are so many delicious camping meal possibilities! 🤗
I use mine like a panini press for campfire grilled sandwiches. My go to is sourdough with Brie and sliced pears and cream cheese and lox with rye bread.
I love the cooking iron for grilled sandwiches! Brie is a favorite of mine too. I also love the combo of ham, mustard, and Swiss cheese. 🤗

It's definitely one of my favorite ways to cook over the campfire!

We saw someone else using one when we camped in the '60's. My dad couldn't rest until he found a place to buy one. Awesome cooking device!

I hope it goes better a second time! Having a good seasoning on the cast iron helps to prevent sticking too!
season it FIRST like any cast iron cookware

We called those Tonka Pie Makers when I was a Campfire Girl in MN. Maybe they were made in Minnetonka, MN?
Bush pies are another great one. Especially when you experiment with different breads.

I never thought to use my “pie irons” for omelets and pizza pockets. Great ideas! Thanks for the tips.

does cooking spray work okay in place of butter?
We’ve been using those for decades. We most often made pies out of bread and pie filling. Called them pudgy pies

We used ours and everything stuck to it. Not enough butter and we need to work this one in I suppose.
I like to get breaded chicken, first toast it in the iron, then make a grilled chicken parm sandwich.
