I used to hate strats when I started playing guitar, as I got older and wiser I realized that not everything is about metal, hot pickups and high gain amps. Recently aquired a strat with fender custom shop texas special pickups. The cleans are crystal clear, and overdriven are glorious, specially position 2 and 4.

And you might be surprised at the metal tones you can get out of "weak" pickups anyway. Adding more gain is the easiest part. If you're getting the overtones and such that you like to begin with, you can always add more dirt... and it sounds even better. Many of the high-output pups sacrifice clarity and richness just for the sake of going RAAAAHHHHH! and that sucks.
As a teen the one guitar I really disliked was a blond Telecaster. Looked so dull and wimpy. As a 36 yo My Main Axe is a vintage blond tele. It just sounds and plays the best. Live and learn.
Hey Ola, put a little rubber strap lock under the volume pot and it makes it tight and you can adjust the tightness by how far down you push the knob. works great on my CS

Not sure why but I use my amps for distortion so I'm all over my volume while playing and it just seems more comfortable and accurate with a a rubber washer under it. Strange how making it more in the way makes more functional and less in the way. let me know if u try it. I had to do it to my Suhrs too . their pots are like free spinning bearing . way to lose.
I did something similar with my pedals for a while. Hardware stores usually sell different sizes of rubber washers as well if you want to mess around with sizes.
I've got a buttermilk Stratocaster, with the Yngwie Malmsteen volume pot from Seymour Duncan installed. It has a much smoother and immediate taper than the stock Fender pot and it's a low friction speed pot, which is highly responsive and a massive improvement. I've been using the Ernie Ball Hyper Slinky 8 - 42 sets lately and really like them on the Strat.

Ola, did you get a little spring in the case? Take the tremolo arm out, drop the spring in and put the arm back on, it’ll stay in position without having to screw the arm all the way in. ✅
I like relic finishes because you don’t have to worry about that one scratch ruining your beautiful top. I really love deep quilted tops, but always worry about scratching it.

SMACK!!! Hey Ola. Love the channel. I have an aged Olympic white strat with a brown tortoise pick guard. The volume knob is totally in the way especially palm muting the higher strings. I took it upon myself to eliminate one of the tone pots and drop the volume pot down to the upper tone pot location. In place of the original volume location I installed a low profile kill switch. Soooooo much more comfortable to play and the kill switch is great to have for crazy stuff.
.9.5 to .44 is just fucking HEAVENLY on "s TyPe" guitars imo. They feel indiscernible to .10s under the fingers, but allow for .9-like bends, vibrato, squeals and all that good stuff! Definitely gonna have to try 'em in D with a THICCer bottom.
I removed that pesky knob from my strat for the same reason. Rewired it to to be one tone, one volume. Covered the hole with a nice low profile bolt. Best mod ever.
I even composed a nice chill songs, when I am very relaxed and about to fall a sleep, or during a dream but I have to be very quick and record somewhere immediately not to forget forever lol.
That bar is reason #1,738 why I always replace the blocks in those vintage-style Fenders with Callaham blocks. You don't have to worry about losing that goofy spring, I prefer the feel of Bill's bars themselves and the delrin bushing at the base of the hole always holds the bar snugly.
Picked up the new LTD te1000 Black Blast to get some modern tones in my stable. I see someone else already requested a review on it. If you can find one, I'm sure there's more people interested in seeing you try it out. Thanx for keep'n it real, your no bullshit content is why I watch.

Ola, with those tuners, on the very end of the high strings, put a small bend on the final 1/8 inch of the string before putting it in the slot, it will stay down in there while tuning it up. Those are actually my favorite type of tuners.
@@jake-slplss yeah, you just take some pliers and put a little kink in the end of the string before putting it inside the post. It just helps give the string a little friction so it wont slide out while tuning.
As we all grow older we all becoming wiser and starting to look for playability rather than extravagant looks & gimmicks and Stratocaster simply makes sense: simple, reliable, comfortable, straight forward. Love it, Ola.
The trem arm is rubbing for a couple of reasons: (1) The bridge was originally designed with the intention to lean and float when tuned to pitch. On yours, it's decked. (2) It looks like you're missing the spring that goes into the threaded hole which keeps the bar from going in so far and also gives it some friction. You can get a pack of them for cheap.

Nice Strat Ola, I've always loved Strats and I've always hated where the volume knob is for the very same reasons you and many others have. Tone pots aren't used often in R'n'R and almost never in metal. Strats have 2 tone controls so one gets voted off the island and I move the volume down to the first tone pot hole (middle). The remaining tone pot is either wired for all 3 pups or the front 2 and the bridge humbucker is wide open no tone control. Normally a pickguard change allows me to only drill for 2 pots if not changing pickguard I will hole punch a disc out of same colour pg material and glue it in carefully to close off the hole left. The extra work is worth it in my opinion.
I like the volume pot placement myself (easy swells and adjustment with the pinky) but I def agree about the tone pots. I have never liked or really even wanted to roll off highs on the bridge pickup. I think it snarls better if you just take the damn tone control out of it. With single coils or humbuckers. Neck pups... yeah I admit there are some times when rolling off the highs makes them even "warmer" and that sound is useful for some things.
Just pop the knob off. Unless you're doing volume swells, just pop it off, and keep it in the case. It still works just fine, and you get lots of clearance. I do this with every one of my Strats. Also, you hit your other pick when you threw your first one. Good job, that.
Ola ! I have found that the easiest way to hold the high string in the fender vintage tuners is to put a tooth pick in the hole after you put the string in it ! It stops it from popping out on you !!

A bit late to the party here, but for the volume knob issues just consolidate all tone to the last pot & just move volume down to where the first tone pot is, simples.
When installing a new string you insert it through the tuner and using your index finger you measure from the tip of your index finger and bend the string at your first knuckle. For me provides perfect slack.
Yours is like one I played more than 20 years ago in a shop; same color, except that one had 3 single coils and a maple fingerboard. Still, it felt right at home in my hands and sounded incredible. I was flat broke and couldn't buy it but I still think about it often.
Im not really a Fender guy, but I do like an old school looking Strat. Jeff Loomis has one that looks a lot like that, except his has all single coil pickups. Beautiful guitar, Ola :D
smartypants mode on: For vintage tuners i usually cross over the string windings on the tuner: put two windings of string on, cross the next winding down across winding two for half a winding and then cross it back up again. Works really well in terms of stability.
I will say my first guitar was a usa fender strat in 2004 , and I did naturally “relic” it… I used to wear studded belts and bracelets and it got heavily used and well thrashed naturally and I’d say it is cooler than the factory worn look.
It would be cool if a manifacturer makes a tuner that is locking and vintage in one. So you lock the string and you put the sharp end in the hole. To me that would be ideal
@@chocolatecookie8571 One thing that I ended up doing to make stringing those vintage tuners much easier was taking a toothpick and wedging it in the hole with the string to hold it in place while you tune up.
The volume on a Strat pisses me off. Always hitting it. I tried foam spacers but made the volume knob more of an issue. Eventually I found some high end (and expensive) Bourns pots that are very resistant. I can play all night and never have volume issues. You need 2 fingers to move it. Don't recall the model number but they are a square black pot and has a ground ring that mounts on the shaft. They come in both 250k or 500k. They look and function great and the roll off is amazing. Best pots on the market that I have found so far. Love the guitar you got there.
Wow, the volume pot really is high up on a strat, isn't it? I bought a tele last year (for MY birthday), so I've gotten used to the pot location on that. Now that I think back, it's like second nature to me when playing a strat to subconsciously roll a finger over the volume knob to make sure it's at ten. 😅
Vintage style tuners are the "original locking tuners." When restrung properly, they work great. On the E/A/D strings, pull the string taught when you put them on, then, at the nut, pull towards the bridge about one fret; on the G/B/high E, one and a half frets. cut one inch past the post, stick it in the hole, and tune up to pitch.
The high G/B/E strings often like to slip out whilst tuning up. A good trick is to wedge a toothpick in the hole along with the string to hold it in place as you tune up.
On thin sets like those I will tune all the strings a full step higher than standard and play it for a while. The not only stretches the wire but get's everything settled in. You can hear these little "tings" and pops and you know shit is breaking in. The only light set I have found that work on Strats is the D'Addario NYXL in 8 to 38. They really sound good and hold up like no other strings I have played. And Big Bends Nut Sauce on the nut is golden. That's usually where the break and what causes tuning issues. I love that relic job. The idea is to make it look like it's been played, not look like it was intentionally beat up
I have an actual 61' Fender Strat. It plays like a demon. Loaded it with Lace Sensors (red) and it screams. But, that damn volume knob. Can't play a damn thing without hitting it. So, I had a special scratch plate made that changed the position of the volume knob from the original position to the part that extends into the horn of the cutaway about 2 or 3 inches below and slightly in front of the neck pickup. It was as far as I could go without having to rout the body, which I refused to do. Looks weird AF but, it gets the knob the hell out of the way. Of course, I still have the original scratch plate so it can be changed back should I ever decide to sell it, which I won't. 🙂
I built a string through body hardtail strat with only master volume / master tone, with a JB jr. in the bridge...it does it all except whammy. No volume control in the way of palm mutes, does the quack and the shreds etc. Highly recommend
I had the same issue with my new strat, that fckin volume knob. I swaped it immediatly for a mini chrome knob I had somewhere. It never messed with my playing again. Also the string dampener is a must when we talk about strats, if you don't have one, just put a tiny piece of foam and you're ready to go.
I just wish Fender's got jumbo frets and nicer tuning machines…i guess that’s what i get after my best guitar experience growing up was with a Jackson JS32…damn cheap guitar but the neck profile and jumbo frets made me fall in love
Hey Ola! On the strat- I think you should move the volume pot to the middle place and go for a master tone at the bottom. Just leave the top hole empty. That would look pretty sick too!! Just saying, clap.
I used to hate stratocaster when i was so young, my main Guitar was Ibanez RG. Fast forward 10 years later, i have 3 stratocasters, and i do shred all the time with strats
I love my CS Strats... Although I needed to really work on the setups.... Now they're both 🔥 That being said, if you want the best playability with the CS sound, buy an Ultra or ultra luxe and put some Fender 69CS pickups! You just saved yourself $2500 and believe me those CS pickups absolutely rule!!! Best of both worlds imo. Much cheaper.

You can put the initial first wrap through the slot, to hold the string bit that goes into the tuner post. Basically it's just half a wrap. Makes changing strings on these types of tuners much simpler. 8.5 to 40 would be great for E or maybe Eb. I think Eddie Van Halen used 9 to 40 for quite some time.
Eliminating the third pot is a really easy mod. A master volume and master tone configuration works very well. You can get nerdy and use Fender 250/500 dual pot for HSS pickups.
On my strats I either get a custom pickguard without that volume knob, so VT or I put a mini toggle for a humbucker split on HSS strats in that spot. No more volume knob in the way of the picking hand. Cheers.

Am on the same boat with relics; I don't really care that much and think that the whole 'looks like played in but is new' can be a bit cheesy, but the one reliced custom shop tele I've played once was unreal and I think that the relic job helped with it... So even though you might not like the look I can only recommend trying one out if you haven't already; maybe you'll like it from a players perspective which arguably might just be the most important thing. and 11:40... yes I felt that one big time
If you do want a relic'ed guitar just buy a standard one and a package of sandpaper. It's not really as "special" of a process as the advertisers want you to think; there are videos showing how to do it in an hour or two. All they're doing is sanding off the parts where it obviously gets worn, scratching them up with screwdrivers and stuff, dropping them on the floor etc. If it's a nitro finish all you need to do to get that "checking" is just put the body in and out of a freezer a few times. You can buy all the pickguards and knobs etc in the right colors that look a hundred years old. You can even mimic a lot of the different colors on faded/aged finishes with a heat gun or hair dryer. Save yourself a couple-few hundred bucks. Hell, do it for your pals and charge THEM a couple/few hundred bucks!
Relic guitars are kinda same as ripped jeans , which bunch of people use. But if you feel comfortable in them, thats the important thing. If you like your guitar "being" used than flash and shiny or just the feel of "satin" road worn or what ever comes to mind but its comfortable and feels good your hands, just used it.
that volume pot bothered me so much that I replaced the pickguard with the Kirk Hammett EMG setup which removes the one volume and leaves one tone one volume...so much better.
sometimes i got same problem that annoying volume knob ,so i change the knob to wheel, turn the plot to 90 degree,just like that jazzmaster wheel, make that volume area totally flat , just little bit modify the pickguard ,then find a wheel , or just modify the normal knob, cut shorter , or just use same knob, but cut the bigger hole for the knob..
I guess the nice thing about all the electronics being on the pickguard is you could get a different pickguard and just rearrange all the knobs. Hey, you can even send me the pickguard and I'll relic it for you. You know, spill some coffee on it, a little dog pee, whatever. 😛
Great guitar! But relic is like buying jeans with holes 😆 I find that anything less than 009 on a Strat is a bit too slinky and I like em slinky. It's just the way a Strat plays i guess. Smooooth and creamy (after playing for a bit😉) 🤘🧙🏼♂️🤘

That's a cool idea, I have a "hot-rodded" strat where I replaced that volume knob with a kill switch so it's just a standard volume- tone set up.

Yeah I use the EB Turbo set which is like 9.5-42 in E and they feel great

Shhhhh, the aftermarket pickup companies who spend big bucks advertising their expensive high-output stuff do NOT want people to know that.
With modern amps that are so hot, you no longer need a 13k+ output for heavy thrashy sounds. 8.5k with good eq will do just fine.

My strat always loved 10-46 in E standard, I know thats pretty common but it just works!

Those SS with the distortion have VERY similar tone to Opeth's more recent albums. Love it. Overall tone is killer, no matter what you had going on.

It would be cool if a manifacturer makes a tuner that is locking and vintage in one. So you lock the string and you put the sharp end in the hole. To me that would be ideal

@@chocolatecookie8571 One thing that I ended up doing to make stringing those vintage tuners much easier was taking a toothpick and wedging it in the hole with the string to hold it in place while you tune up.

The volume on a Strat pisses me off. Always hitting it. I tried foam spacers but made the volume knob more of an issue. Eventually I found some high end (and expensive) Bourns pots that are very resistant. I can play all night and never have volume issues. You need 2 fingers to move it. Don't recall the model number but they are a square black pot and has a ground ring that mounts on the shaft. They come in both 250k or 500k. They look and function great and the roll off is amazing. Best pots on the market that I have found so far. Love the guitar you got there.

Wow, the volume pot really is high up on a strat, isn't it? I bought a tele last year (for MY birthday), so I've gotten used to the pot location on that. Now that I think back, it's like second nature to me when playing a strat to subconsciously roll a finger over the volume knob to make sure it's at ten. 😅

You can use Fender Tension springs for tremolo lever. If you want it harder 😬
Vintage style tuners are the "original locking tuners." When restrung properly, they work great. On the E/A/D strings, pull the string taught when you put them on, then, at the nut, pull towards the bridge about one fret; on the G/B/high E, one and a half frets. cut one inch past the post, stick it in the hole, and tune up to pitch.
The high G/B/E strings often like to slip out whilst tuning up. A good trick is to wedge a toothpick in the hole along with the string to hold it in place as you tune up.

On thin sets like those I will tune all the strings a full step higher than standard and play it for a while. The not only stretches the wire but get's everything settled in. You can hear these little "tings" and pops and you know shit is breaking in. The only light set I have found that work on Strats is the D'Addario NYXL in 8 to 38. They really sound good and hold up like no other strings I have played. And Big Bends Nut Sauce on the nut is golden. That's usually where the break and what causes tuning issues. I love that relic job. The idea is to make it look like it's been played, not look like it was intentionally beat up

I have an actual 61' Fender Strat. It plays like a demon. Loaded it with Lace Sensors (red) and it screams. But, that damn volume knob. Can't play a damn thing without hitting it. So, I had a special scratch plate made that changed the position of the volume knob from the original position to the part that extends into the horn of the cutaway about 2 or 3 inches below and slightly in front of the neck pickup. It was as far as I could go without having to rout the body, which I refused to do. Looks weird AF but, it gets the knob the hell out of the way. Of course, I still have the original scratch plate so it can be changed back should I ever decide to sell it, which I won't. 🙂
I built a string through body hardtail strat with only master volume / master tone, with a JB jr. in the bridge...it does it all except whammy. No volume control in the way of palm mutes, does the quack and the shreds etc.

I had the same issue with my new strat, that fckin volume knob. I swaped it immediatly for a mini chrome knob I had somewhere. It never messed with my playing again. Also the string dampener is a must when we talk about strats, if you don't have one, just put a tiny piece of foam and you're ready to go.
Does that string dampener has the same purpose and effect than the regular fretwraps?

I just wish Fender's got jumbo frets and nicer tuning machines…i guess that’s what i get after my best guitar experience growing up was with a Jackson JS32…damn cheap guitar but the neck profile and jumbo frets made me fall in love
Hey Ola! On the strat- I think you should move the volume pot to the middle place and go for a master tone at the bottom. Just leave the top hole empty. That would look pretty sick too!! Just saying, clap.
I have a 62 custom shop from 2000. I thought it was amazing until I played a nice Tele! I now play my Tele way more than my Strat. It’ll do it all!

I used to hate stratocaster when i was so young, my main Guitar was Ibanez RG. Fast forward 10 years later, i have 3 stratocasters, and i do shred all the time with strats
I love my CS Strats... Although I needed to really work on the setups.... Now they're both 🔥
That being said, if you want the best playability with the CS sound, buy an Ultra or ultra luxe and put some Fender 69CS pickups! You just saved yourself $2500 and believe me those CS pickups absolutely rule!!! Best of both worlds imo. Much cheaper.
I did that on my 2018 Elite with noiseless pickups... Swapped them and this guitar is now a banger

Remove the two tone pots, move the volume pot to the bridge tin pot position and plug the holes with a cap
You can put the initial first wrap through the slot, to hold the string bit that goes into the tuner post. Basically it's just half a wrap. Makes changing strings on these types of tuners much simpler. 8.5 to 40 would be great for E or maybe Eb. I think Eddie Van Halen used 9 to 40 for quite some time.

I like this style of tuners over just regular ones, but I haven't used locking tuners
Eliminating the third pot is a really easy mod. A master volume and master tone configuration works very well. You can get nerdy and use Fender 250/500 dual pot for HSS pickups.

On my strats I either get a custom pickguard without that volume knob, so VT or I put a mini toggle for a humbucker split on HSS strats in that spot. No more volume knob in the way of the picking hand. Cheers.
I use just a little blue tack under the volume control , I find anything higher stops the whammy bar.

Am on the same boat with relics; I don't really care that much and think that the whole 'looks like played in but is new' can be a bit cheesy, but the one reliced custom shop tele I've played once was unreal and I think that the relic job helped with it... So even though you might not like the look I can only recommend trying one out if you haven't already; maybe you'll like it from a players perspective which arguably might just be the most important thing.

I'm not a fan of relic-ing. Especially if it makes the guitar cost more.

If you do want a relic'ed guitar just buy a standard one and a package of sandpaper. It's not really as "special" of a process as the advertisers want you to think; there are videos showing how to do it in an hour or two. All they're doing is sanding off the parts where it obviously gets worn, scratching them up with screwdrivers and stuff, dropping them on the floor etc. If it's a nitro finish all you need to do to get that "checking" is just put the body in and out of a freezer a few times. You can buy all the pickguards and knobs etc in the right colors that look a hundred years old. You can even mimic a lot of the different colors on faded/aged finishes with a heat gun or hair dryer.
Save yourself a couple-few hundred bucks.
Hell, do it for your pals and charge THEM a couple/few hundred bucks!

Relic guitars are kinda same as ripped jeans , which bunch of people use. But if you feel comfortable in them, thats the important thing. If you like your guitar "being" used than flash and shiny or just the feel of "satin" road worn or what ever comes to mind but its comfortable and feels good your hands, just used it.
Beautiful guitar, that rosewood fretboard is thirsting for some lemon oil or bore oil though. Give it a dark lusty sheen 🍋

Ola! you should remove the volume pot if it bothers you (exchange with a lower tone knob, maybe push pull?)
that volume pot bothered me so much that I replaced the pickguard with the Kirk Hammett EMG setup which removes the one volume and leaves one tone one volume...so much better.
sometimes i got same problem that annoying volume knob ,so i change the knob to wheel, turn the plot to 90 degree,just like that jazzmaster wheel, make that volume area totally flat , just little bit modify the pickguard ,then find a wheel , or just modify the normal knob, cut shorter , or just use same knob, but cut the bigger hole for the knob..

I guess the nice thing about all the electronics being on the pickguard is you could get a different pickguard and just rearrange all the knobs. Hey, you can even send me the pickguard and I'll relic it for you. You know, spill some coffee on it, a little dog pee, whatever. 😛

I find that anything less than 009 on a Strat is a bit too slinky and I like em slinky. It's just the way a Strat plays i guess. Smooooth and creamy (after playing for a bit😉)
