    Dr. Wally .. a fantastic lesson!!! Thank you for posting. I had the opportunity to play with a fantastic trumpet player who studied with Lennie Tristano at about the time that Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh were studying with Lennie. I asked him, “why do I like Art Pepper much better than Lee Konitz?”. He said “Art swung a lot harder than Lee.” Look at some of Art Pepper licks and I think you’ll see it. Your sound on alto is fantastic!! Also on tenor!! Thank You Dr. Wally!!

      Well you just made my morning, thanks Gary! I love both (obviously), Lee is almost like classical music at times which I love as well! LOOOOOVE Tristano :)

    Hi Dr. Wally! I love what you do. I've been on sax for about 3.5 years and I start college majoring in music with my Bari in September. You've made me feel better about my playing a lot, because I've played for not as long, I feel like I'm worse than the others. However, when you made a video talking about how just because I can do some improvisation without knowing all the theory and still sound OK isn't a bad thing. Thanks :)

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Theory explains the art, AFTER it is created. Theorists talk, performers create. Theory nerds are less useful than a bag of turds without a handle.

    Dr Wally posted a new arrangement for his intro with more saxes. Who doesn't love more sax! BTW - think of how much goodness came from those famous 4 notes of Beethoven's 5th. You lead us down the path with 4 bars on some cool compositional craftiness.

    Thanks for the great lesson. I have 1 question. When we transcribe a phrase and alter it after, do we write them down ? To remember it in next practice session ? Or are we just try to remember and hope it will pop out when we improvise ?

    One quick question- as a tenor player should we transcribe the Eflat pdf or use as is?? Transcription will make resulting chords more “funky” perhaps. Thoughts?? Thx.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely up to you. This was just an example of what I do on alto. In my private studio we have the tenor players do the correct transposition, obviously (and play along with tenor recordings).

  • @petersmith228

    Hi Dr Wally should the C be a sharp in Bminor?

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely depends on the context! we absolutely can't look at chords in isolation - we look at chords in context of their function. In this case, the b-minor is part of a ii-V of a-minor. In a-minor, the C natural is the 3rd (critical to it's sound). C# is a perfectly viable note choice as well - DEPENDENT on context and usage!
      The idea of THIS CHORD = THIS SCALE is a fallacy. Context is critical.
