What I dont quite understand about the keto diet is that if what causes mitochondria dysfunction is maybe pesticides and herbicides that are obviously in every food we eat from nature, how is it possible that we should be eating animals if it has been proven that they have been fed with food full of hormones, pesticides and herbicides? Keto diet is full of animal produce foods (cheeses, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, etc) so for me is very difficult to understand what you are suggesting. Can you explain this, please? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Ive been diagnosed with PD six months ago so any info wil be appreciated😊

I think you could use a vegan diet and achieve the metabolic changes that I suggest explain my response. Perhaps you could try swapping the dairy in coffee with eating an avocado in the morning or just putting coconut oil in your morning coffee. I don't know. You have brought up some great points. I am unable to answer the question, "how is it possible that we should be eating animals?" I don't think there is a need to eat animals, but I have not tried to find out myself to see if I could get the same results on a vegan diet. I know many persons with Parkinson's who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. They seem to do OK with Parkinson's. So, I would encourage you to continue to avoid animals.
I need to make it clear that I don't follow a ketogenic diet today. I go into ketosis in the morning due to intermittent fasting, but I go out of ketosis during the eating window. Also, I am just saying that what I did worked for me. It is yet to be proven if it can work for others.
A nutritionist I know, Miriam Kalamian, has told me that many of the people who try to do a ketogenic diet and are vegan are struggling with a deficiency of carnitine. Carnitine is critical in getting fatty acids into the mitochondria via carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1. So, you may want to consider supplementing with carnitine. Vegans also need a source of cyanocobalamin or vitamin B12, but you probably are aware of the B12 only being available in animals and the need for supplements of B12.
      All the best,
      Bill

Studies looking at low carb versus vegetarianism and low fat basically showed improvements that were similar . Any diet that eliminates the processed carbohydrates and or increases fiber can result in the same metabolic improvements. See Layne Norton's work.
