This film was originally supposed to be way different. It was supposed be an R rated horror/thriller movie. The main character was supposed to be a psychotic killer who was part toon (his father is a human man and his mother is a toon) he looses his mind because he isn't either and takes his rage out on his parents. The studios took Bakshis script and completly rewrote it. So Bakshi and his team added in all those unfinished cartoons in the background and such on purpose to wreck the movie.
I guess the executives really disliked the child concept because it’s completely removed even after they tried to tone down. Also making Lonette a last minute antagonist along with the out of knowhere climax was one of the ways of Bashi screwed with the movie.
The actors and animators were just making shit up in the dark since the executives kept delaying this mythical new script, and just rolled their eyes when it finally did come.
What’s sad is the film was altered behind Bakshi’s back from what it was originally supposed to be which was: A real man has sex with a cartoon woman and give birth to a half man half toon child who grows up to resent his father and finds he doesn’t fit in in either world and becomes a psychotic killer.
Companies changing stuff on Bashi by forcing him or with little notice was a bit of a reoccurring problem with the studios from I heard. Changing Saruman to Aruman because the producer got confused in lord of the rings is one those examples.
Fun fact. The random characters doing random weird things that are just awkwardly inserted on to the screen comes from instructions the director gave to the animation team, all the instructions were to "make something silly" and the rest was history
My theory as to why and or how Frank never aged while in Cool World is that if you really think about it cartoon characters never really age, Therefore that logic must apply to Cool World's laws of physics and the fact that Frank never aged a day during the movies time skip is proof that Cool World's laws of physics apply to a real person as well as it does to a "doodle."
This actually isn’t what Ralph Bauchi created. Apparently, when he was writing the script, the studio interfered so much that he had no idea what was going on with this movie. In fact, it’s why he named the character Holli Wood (Hollywood). Referencing how she was destroying everything. So many changes is why the plot feels scattered and incomplete. Even the actress that played Holly wanted to make the film more family friendly because she wanted to show some kids she was visiting at the hospital. Admittedly a nice gesture but completely unnecessary. Ralph’s actual plot for this movie involved a man who has sex with a toon. Then it would focus on the child. Feeling like a complete outcast, not knowing where he belongs and even tries to kill the father. Some have made it headcannon that the child is Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit.
I mean, the sad thing is that Ralph naming her Holli Wood, as in Hollywood destroying everything, is kind of a sad fact that’s still happening to this day.
i remember when this came out my dad rented it for my siblings and I became he thought it was like Roger rabbit... he was quite embarrassed to have to explain some of the things going on in the movie and the questions we had about it
LOL, my dad once angered my mom when he took my youngest brother (who was only a toddler at the time) to see the 2nd Jurassic Park movie, which freaked him out. He only did this because my youngest brother was getting into Dinosaur stuff lol.
I love cool world tbh. The art and vibe gets me, the original concept for the movie was much better. It was going to be a gritty horror film in the style of Roger rabbit but the producer who worked in a billion horror movies didn't want to make another horror film soooo he hired new writers and fucked it all up.
This is a guilty pleasure of mine... I just kind of love the insanity of it all. The funny thing to me about the end is that if they knew that 'killing' Frank would make him a toon and he could be with his girl, why not just ask some one, "Hey, throw me off this building so I can get layed." I mean, there doesn't seem to be any down side to it.
Well, dying isn't very a nice thing, also this last minute rule was problably forced to be writted by the third writer of the script, because Paramount wanted at any cost a family friendly movie with a good ending for all the characters... Even tought even in Roger Rabbit some key character die during the story. XD
I can´t belive this movie was made and put out. It´s so unfinished and chaotic and not in a chaotic script, everything are a mess. If this is what people think all cartoon movies are then it´s something wrong with thier minds.
I wish I could’ve been apart of this stream. This movie is one of the most confusing messes of a movie I’ve ever seen. And the sad thing is we could’ve gotten something far more interesting from Ralph Bashi’s original story for it, a psychological thriller about the dangers and consequences of unprotected sex and bad breeding, but no, what we got was a confused piece of shit that basically tried to be Roger Rabbit, without the great blending of animation and live action that’s not just due to the poor effects, but also the terrible acting, especially from Brad Pitt. And by poor effects, I don’t mean the animation itself, because that’s the other sad thing. As chaotic as the animation can be, it’s actually really well done. What I mean by poor effects are the lighting and shadowing that made Roger Rabbit a master piece, which again, could’ve been saved if the acting was much better and more convincing.
As a Las Vegas transplant I wholeheartedly love this movie just for the Vegas scenes. And that the Plaza has a giant cartoon husky in a motorcycle jacket painted on the side.
Totally agree with Rishi. There are parts I like, such as the idea of behind it and some of the animation, but it's so badly made, and those f***ing background characters made me want to rage quit. It had been on my radar for so many years, finally watched it, and I was so disappointed.
I won't deny Holli was sexy, but I expected the movie to lean harder on that than it ever did. Which was ultimately disappointing. Reading about the behind the scenes issues, it does come across like the studio didn't believe in the project and so it ended up as some confused, messy thing.
I entered the comments section expecting people to be thirsty over holly, but I legitimately couldn’t find any. You’ve surprised me in a good way today internet
11:32 Here another thing that is quite messy in this movie: the sentences. Like, your seeing a woman armed with a pen that is going to stab a doodle old man and the first thing you say is "She looks pretty", i mean wtf?
12:20 Not gonna lie, forgot her full name was Holli Would and just thought Brad was yelling he'd do the goofy cartoon version of her. Hell, just make Brad Pitt screaming "WOULD!" into a meme unto itself.
This was one of the most inane movies I've seen, although I really like the animation. I know many people already brought this up, but I gotta say the film's original concept sounds much better than the final product. Granted it's hard to say how the original concept would've been executed, but at least it would've been more interesting.
You know I like this movie and believe me I like it for some reason I like the movie but I hate it on how poorly used if we get the REMASTER of this movie with a bit of a REBOOT we can see it in a better light.
Fun fact: To promote the movie, Paramount put a 75 foot cut out of Holli Wood on the Hollywood sign, to the anger of local residents, who said that the cartoon character was “appalling” and an insult to women
I actually gave this a watch just recently; IMHO, it may be a _mess,_ but IMHO, I can't really call it 'bad.' It's too interesting to be 100% unlikable. Yet, a hybrid real-&-animated child (the offspring of a human guy and a 'Doodle' woman who do it) growing up resenting itself for what it is, with no parental figures in its life, and becoming a psychotic killer... _does_ still have potential I feel. Remake/reboot anyone?
Yo man, i've just found out in Archive of our own that someone want to make some kind of rewrite of Cool World with the original plot. It's only at the first chapter right now and i really hope that It doesn't stop there XD
I hate Ralph Bakshi, and just watching the clips of this awful movie again makes me remember why. "Oh, it's not his fault, the movie was originally going to be different!" F*** that: ALL of his movies are poorly put together crass nonsense! Yes, even "Lord of the Rings."

Wish we had the original script and could have fans make it instead of the S-S-Studios.
