In my opinion, having Philip as a companion on your excursion helps you. He is a little older and less timid (or perhaps less cautious). Philip will ask questions or interact in a way that makes the people reveal more about themselves. He places or puts himself in there, with the Chinese speaking people. Perhaps he is being consistent with his language learning tip. That is, he immerses himself in with the people that speak another language. He even gets physically closer to people, sort of gets into other people's space (physically & figuratively). Not at all, implying that your are invading people's space. Maybe he learned a different concept of "personal space" from his Hasidic community. Regardless, you both (Ari & Philip) fed off each other by giving each other more confidence and at the same time being respectful in this cross cultural excursion. This is one of your best videos. Would like to hear you comment about what you (Ari) learned from each excursion or video (for example, it was interesting to hear the claim, that Myanmar is a major exporter of jade).

Personally, I work in a factory (Ontario, Canada) and 90% of my coworkers are Chinese. It really got me interested in learning the language, and I've been on Duo Lingo for about 2 months now. This last month past I haven't been giving that much effort, but finding this channel again and seeing the smiles it brings to passer-bye's when Xiaoma speaks to them is exactly how some of my own coworkers felt when I come in and try to speak to them.
This content has inspired me to turn my outlook around and want to push further into learning their tongue, with enough practice I hope I could be at this level of speech!

Have to get this off my chest guys. I'm a Venezuelan living in Colombia. Even in countries where spanish is spoken, the local culture and its people make it unique. I get a full judgemental look once colombians hear my accent. It's hard but it's long story. I watched this video and saw the faces of the people when you speak their language...it's like a new level of respect for them as immigrants. Quite cool. Thank you, Xiaoma. It may sound stupid but your work is profound and got to me. The emotion of the older gentleman while speaking to you and your friend at the beginning almost broke me. Well done, you have talent. Keep it up.
