    In my experience, if I have something that should have sold sooner, it’s usually because my shipping instructions have gotten altered or were not correct for some reason. Often eBay auto populates the package measurements with a length that is so long, it triggers higher shipping costs. So the first thing I check in my listing is the shipping method and measurements. Sometimes my shipping method has disappeared and I need to reenter it, meaning if someone had wanted to purchase it, they couldn’t have. So whenever eBay invites me to send offers, before I do, I revise the listing and check it to make sure it’s going to offer correct shipping costs.

      Wise advice! I’ll add one slight caveat, and that is that a few weeks ago eBay decided to change something that of course didn’t need to be changed. It made it more difficult to send out offers if you edit/ update anything other than 1.) putting a minimum offer amount in your pricing, and or 2.) anything in the custom sku.
      If you edit even one space or character, it’s now a significant enough change that once you’re done with the edit and want to send the offer, you can’t do so immediately. For some unexplained reason they’ve done something to the system software, whatever, that forces you wait like 10 or 15 minutes. If you try and send it through you’ll get a pop-up informing you that says “offer not sent!”

    The call with the question about free shipping and the buyer requesting priority mail… Just another reason why I don’t do free shipping! Every now and then I contemplate doing free shipping by building the cost of shipping into the item, and then a reason comes up like this one for me not to make that change. Thank you, Justin. Awesome videos perfect content; the questions sprinkled in with your sales.

    I understand why getting upset about returns isn’t advantageous and major stressors can impact one’s health and well-being. However, the instance with the vintage Scream mask is a super low down example. With that being said, why not impose a restocking fee (significant percentage based) that would act as a major deterrent for items of such a high ticket value? 40% restocking on $550=$220…make that a VERY EXPENSIVE rental and you’re much less likely to receive such a return. I’m not even suggesting that you apply that to all your inventory, but for these rare, obscure, and valuable listings. It’s just a thought.

    I had an item sold to a buyer that was scanned at my local PO, then scanned again at the main facility in my town, and then basically disappeared for approx. 3 1/2 months. The buyer was super cool about it, and didn’t even notify me for about the first two months. I let him know that because it was a small package, and it being shipped in December, it’s very possible it just got hung up some where, and just before I was about to send him a refund (which he said he didn’t even care about), he notified me a day later that it arrived. It’s not typical that a buyer would be that patient, but it was a low cost item.

    Thanks for the informative videos! My experience with the late shipping ding issue was that even though I printed the label within the stated handling time, I got a ding for not having it scanned through the post office in that stated timeframe.... So, I no longer risk that. eBay support told me that it doesn't matter when the label is generated/printed/purchased; it's only the scanning with the shipper that determines that actual handling time... yea I recently had the same issue as the lady with the refunded lost package. I put in 10 packages to my post office, the new guy their accidently put my packages in the mail bag of empty mail bags and they got buried. the delivery guy picked it up along with the other mail brought it to the main hub in our county threw it with the rest of the empty mail bags, then it was shipped to the main hub for my state after that we could not locate it.
    2 months of nothing. a few people wanted a refund, others were thankfully very patient, after those two months one of the refunders messaged me saying his package finally showed up and he wanted to pay for it again(yay!) after that i checked the others and found them all scanned in atlanta, georgia. all is good now, had to eat the cost of 2 items but thankfully the most expensive item was repurchased.
    all in all it is what it is. nothing I could do about it besides relay info to the buyers and refund them when requested.

    So my typical process is to make sure I get the label printed before midnight on the last day of my handling time. Then I take the packages to the post office the next morning. I use ground advantage for pretty much everything and I get alot of packages that are delivered 1-2 days after the expected delivery date with that service. Every once in a while I go through my late packages report and check the tracking. The tracking will show that USPS updated the delivery date to reflect they knew they would be late. I use the automated "request to remove defects" tool on the help page to dispute these lates and it is removed pretty much every time. That's a helpful tip if you are on the border of losing Top rated seller.

    Regarding international sales that are shipped direct, many countries have pretty good websites for their national post on which you can find your tracked package destined there even after it may have dropped off USPS tracking. I have been able to salvage a number of international sales over the years by doing that and handholding the buyer through whatever might be necessary to get the package to them. You can also find out if the buyer has refused to pick up the package and pay the duty.

    Returns are more of a problem if your profit margin is low. Then returns really hurt, especially if the return cost is high (big item/long distance). So with some types of product niches etc, you need to take extra care to describe accurately, & if you accept offers, try screening out awkward buyers by looking at their feedback left for others etc before you accept an offer

    I can't believe that just a couple of hours ago I saw the item that was your #2 of the week - the SNES Super Scope - at a thrift store I had never been to before. I ended up buying a lot there, but had no cell service [very common out here] or wifi to look up comps; I passed on the game gun, but I may go back tomorrow now that I did some research; hopefully it has the receiver and game, as I can test it here; and hopefully the store isn't charging a ton if they've not tested it since "for parts only" sells at a much lower cost.
    I had a Halloween-related return too - a new/sealed Lego set. It was an 18+ set that the buyer didn't realize even though it was in the listing/photos/etc, and bought for their 6 year old granddaughter. It was over $200 new, but much less if opened. So I did worry a bit while waiting for the return to arrive, but I was thankful - it came int he same heavy duty shipping box I used, and was still sealed; re-listed it and it has watchers and I am sure it will sell by Black Friday.
    I think the anxiety of wondering if a return will arrive in the condition sold is what gets me - being used to "rent" an item is eye roll worthy for me, but mostly it's the wait for the return and wondering what will happen if the item comes back in a condition that means I can't resell it or can resell it at a lot less of a price. So far I've not had that happen, but I am sure that day will come.

    There seems to be a lot of confusion about what eBay gives a late strike for, and so many people say they can't be TRS because of it. As said in the video, if you get a carrier scan next day, regardless if it arrives on time or not, you are good. If you ship a day or two late and get a scan a day or two late BUT it still arrives on time, you are good. It only counts against you if you get a late scan AND a late delivery. TRS is not hard to get and maintain, even if an occasional package goes out a day late.

    What I’ve struggled most with is wrapping my head around the various aspects of shipping. Although I’m gradually learning, the most frustrating situation is where someone buys more than one item, such as 3 of the same item.
    EBay multiplies the weight by 3 to adjust shipping cost, but they leave the box size the same - which means the shipping cost isn’t adjusted enough and I end up losing money on shipping. Is there a setting I’m missing where I can force the box size to be adjusted as well?
    Due to my location, I have to use calculated shipping.

    You can change priority to ground advantage. eBay said it was okay. I talked to them twice about it. It’s only projected to be about 1 days difference, and usually it’s just as good as priority time.
    Make sure when you’re listening your item you are using ground advantage as the shipping option also. Many times when listing it shows the priority option.
    But you can just change it. Especially if you have free shipping obviously. Since you are paying for it.

    • @Animaldrummerpunk
      @Animaldrummerpunk หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah I would tend to disagree with eating it just to make the customer happy. You’re not Walmart or Best Buy, you’re going to notice a hit on the sale from just trying to go priority which I have found doesn’t necessarily at times get it there any faster than ground advantage. I also personally wouldn’t offer free shipping, it doesn’t give an accurate price of the item and since the shipping charge is fluctuated it again changes the amount of profit you might receive if at all. I think it’s ridiculous for people to have to result to free shipping just because resellers are telling you to do it that way. The person buying your item can change the ground to priority if they want to and pay the difference when you’ve selected calculated.

I approved the return and then about two weeks later towards the end of the 30 day return window was when they finally shipped it back to me, but they did not wrap up the typewriter at all and put it in a different box then the one I had shipped it with and so it was far too damaged without repair from bouncing all around. I reported it to eBay but there automated system said I needed to do a full refund because that was my return policy

      Specify the return package must be in good condition and the item padded to prevent further damages plus a photo of the item going into the box for shipping claims. If they don't follow the rules and more damage is sustained, that will be deducted from any refund for their neglect.

    Does anyone know why if you use eBay calculated shipping and use exact measurements and weights you can still get low cost of shipping reviews? I’m at 5.0 for everything but a 4.8 for shipping cost and am just using the tools eBay gives me. When I list I pack, measure and weigh so I’m giving exact weights and dimensions. I don’t have a store yet but that makes me weary of starting one!

      This is because different people have different opinions on what "reasonable" means for shipping costs. Some buyers feel like what they were charged was fair and give you 5 stars, others feel like the same amount was too much and they give you 2 stars. I wouldn't stress about it.

    Hi Justin....thanks for answering my question about the missing sent item. It was weird from the start. It shipped to Portland, OR which is NOT my local international location so I don't think it actually WAS international. The buyer said he was in Vietnam. ANYWAY, when you clicked on the tracking it just said preshipment USPS awaiting item. But i DID in fact drop it at the PO USPS ground adv. Oh well... just a weird transaction all around. Awaiting item means it never got scanned into the system and unfortunately, there will be no easy method of locating the package. Stories like this are why I always wait in line and have a worker scan everything before leaving. They often encourage people with prelabeled packages to just drop them at a desk or table. Problem is, once you leave, you have no idea what happens to those boxes. It may take an extra minute or two, but once something is scanned, you are covered and can at least file an insurance claim if it later gets lost. Hope you get lucky and it shows up, but worse case, lesson learned.

      That sounds like it was going to a freight forwarder who would have then sent it on to your Vietnam buyer. Since EBay does not permit purchases through freight forwarders, if you had gotten a delivery scan at the Portland address, you would have been free and clear and not owed the Vietnam buyer anything as far as EBay is concerned. Justin discusses that in this video.

    Ebay doesn't cover everything if you use the EIS. I thought it did but I sold a pair of shoes to a buyer in Mexico through the EIS. The buyer said they didn't fit. They refused to return unless I paid the shipping. When I wouldn't (I take returns but buyer pays which is clearly noted in the listing), they decided to do a charge back. EBay threw me to the wolves and wouldn't step in. They withheld the payment from me until the buyer's bank made a decision. It took 7 weeks for them to side with me but, still, EBay did nothing to help me and stood ready and willing to give the buyer their money back if the bank had sided with them.

    When I list items I usually list them high, while I am reviewing those from last month and now analyzing views and past selling data and listed, but I also consider that one buyers who is looking for a good deal. A few things have sold right away, but my inventory is high and that is when I analyze what would I pay for that? There is always another listing that might sell right away and a backlog of inventory never reviewed may seem like something goodwill will end up with. But very few can live off reselling things of nostalgia, days of high Quality, and of sentimental and numismatic value.

    Hey Justin...A light hearted (but quite serious) question for you. We need an expert ruling on something. Like you and your wife, my wife and I are partners in our reselling venture. It's a great way to spend time together and share a common interest. As you mention, we also benefit from one another's different knowledge and "eye" when sourcing. To add to the fun, we track net profit and ROI stats by who sourced what as part of a friendly marital competition. (Year to date, she's ahead on profit. I am ahead on ROI.) Here's where we need your ruling. My wife says if she sees it first but I pick it up, it belongs to her. I think the rule is thee who touches it, gets it. After all, possession is 9/10 of the law, right? What's your view on this?

    • @justinresells
      @justinresells  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is a tough one. On one hand, I see where your wife is coming from, but seeing something is very different than obtaining it. I think if she were to see something, and say "oh look at this!" that would be the same thing as "touching" it. But if you grab something and she says "I saw that first!" it doesn't count.
      Thank you for asking the important questions!

    Just a heads up. On the seller tools and overview area it won't ask why you're ending it but if running through eBay selling areas in the basic areas like on the app, it'll ask but one option is item is no longer available for sale which seems to be the easiest one to select that generally makes sense for me when I select something that way. I generally end and relist items on the computer the way you did in the video but if I'm let's say at a friends house and they're like hey I want that item in your store I'll buy it and I'm like ok sure, I'll pull out my phone and end it on the app and let them come by to get it. I'm not sure why eBay loves having multiple ways to experience your own store depending on which link you go to in a browser and also if you're on the app, etc but yeah if you're in the listed items areas that looks more basic and old school on the browser or on the app, it'll ask. Hopefully that made sense. lol

      a lot of non ebay sellers (antique mall sellers, auction houses and appraisers etc) consider over 50 years to be vintage. There is no hard and fast rule about vintage. But "antique" is almost universally accepted at 100 years and over. I tend to follow the 20 years or so as well. It's hard for me to think of anything made in the 2000's as vintage.
