The song is about depression. Tatiana struggles with it from time to time and she uses the nature metaphor to convey it in the lyrics. She´s an amazing lyricist, and considering that english is not her mother language it´s even more impressive.
About the effects, Eugene (bass) and Tatiana have stated in some interviews that they use the same that every band/singer uses nowadays, from the biggest star to the most unknown. Sometimes it´s just so to adapt the sound to the venue (arena, stadium, big, small, open, closed, etc) etc that they play in, others to present a more cohesive and clean performance but without a great dose of talent you won´t go far. And keep in mind that in the specific case of voice effects you´re just adding a new layer to the singer´s job, because they have to be very aware, in sync and in control of the situation in order to pull it off perfectly or it all goes to shambles.
In Jinjer case, there are lots of people who watched this and other shows that are launched as official videos by Napalm Records and say that in concert you hear and feel some effects but others are completely added by Napalm Records post-production when launching their official videos. Great reaction. You gotta react to more of this amazingly talented band. It´s a deep rabbit hole. I´ll let the Jinjer Army do the sugestions. :)

If you put this and Pisces and her general vibe together, it's clear she knows a thing or two about strugling with bipolar disorder.

@@brandiannmclain yes, she uses the Perrenial change of seasons as a metaphor for her own seasonal depression. It's a great song.
As for effects they use compression. Delay and reverb accomplish this. Tati records the harmonies that are overlaid, so that's still all her.

Simply put, its a self identification/metaphor for her mood and dying plants in winter that come back to life in spring. Plants that die and come back every year are called Perennials.
She did a beautiful job creating the lyrics, much like a poet to describe her feelings on this process and how she relates to it personally for herself in her own life. English isn't even her first language. This is a masterful song by Jinjer in so many dimensions.

Perennial is also known for a type of vegetation that will seemingly die off during the winter months while its covered by the icy winter. But once summer thaws and ground warms it will bloom once again. My basic interpretation is its about the suffering through tough times and looking forward to the good times.

I legitimately wish I could like this video multiple times.
    Also, a few things:
    - They actually sold her jumpsuit at their merch booth on tour last fall. I *think* they sold it in Greenville, SC, which is where I saw them. I remember walking in and seeing it hanging up...but it wasn’t there when I left.
-Yes, there’s definitely a backing track, but that’s common. Sometimes there’s stuff you just can’t pull off live. (Tati is great, but she can’t harmonize with herself live.)
-I love your reactions. Jinjer, Deftones, Billie Eilish, Poppy, etc. Huge thanks from South Carolina during a very bleak time.

    • @enlightendbel
      @enlightendbel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember when they did that, some creepers were asking if it was washed or not.
And yeah, there's a backing track to replace what normally would be done by backing vocalists, but well, I doubt finding a backing vocalist that can keep up with her is easy.
In terms of "effects", they only use some delay on some parts, some echo on others and compression to level between her cleans, growls and screams, she's pretty pitchy in her cleans and anyone that growls and screams knows the right way to do that is by not forcing it, so the volume on them is likely lower than it is on the more belchy cleans.
Those are the standard effects used by any vocalist and well, practically anyone that records their voice for YT also uses delay and compression, with USB microphones often without even knowing it since the interface built into the microphone does that automatically.
These effects do not aid ability in any way.

If it makes you feel any better, I believe I've watched all the interviews with Tatiana & the band that is out there & in one specifically she basically pleads for the viewers to read her lyrics because she puts so much of herself into them. So yeah, I enjoy it when a reactor takes the time to check out the lyrics & give their opinion regarding the meaning.

Heck yeah, you want to know. Good for you! :) I'm still skeptical because of how un-believably shocking the sounds I hear coming out of her mouth are. A recent live video I compared to 3 or 4 bootlegs because it was so unbelievably savage - far more so than the studio version. I'd suggest Who Is Gonna Be The One official live next - it is a few years old but so awesome. Save that savage thing for a bit later, there's plenty of amazing stuff to listen to from them.
All the officially released live shows have some editing because otherwise there'd be a bunch of noise, so at the minimum they clean up the audio. I don't know if you'd want to react to it, (though you wouldn't be the first) but the best demonstration of what she can do with the bare minimum of effects (probably some reverb) back when they were nobodies, in an amateur bootleg that's been mostly ignored for almost a decade on some random YT channel from eastern Ukraine, is their cover of Lamb of God's song Laid To Rest from 2012 that was uploaded by NosSam with the title all in Russian except for the name Jinjer. The song was never released and while there are other videos of it that one has the best sound.
Unfortunately, you took a bit of a wrong turn at the beginning with the interpretation. Tati struggles with depression, and it gets worse in the winter when the world dies. What lasts is her, and she wishes she didn't sometimes. So she wrote this song to help herself deal with it.
Exhausted nature is so tragic and suicidal : she says she gets suicidal in the winter, but it sounds like she's being poetic here.
How spectacular she is when she kills herself : the fall colors are caused by the metabolic processes where the trees shut down for the winter.
Death throes are crawling to her toes as the last leaf is falling off her head : the nutrients being withdrawn into the trees' roots as they shut down. See also "we're not dead just enjoying coma."
A part that I'm not 100% clear on is later on "under permanent ice, we found a breathless paradise" which doesn't fit the death and rebirth theme, but on the other hand she's talked about coming to terms with her depression. She says she feels is a permanent part of who she is, but feeling that being sad all the time has a certain beauty to it, so maybe that's what she means.
I'm also impressed that she can take subject matter as intensely nerdy as a tree's metabolic processes and make such beautiful lyrical poetry out of it.

Jinjer is one of those bands whose live sound, to me at least, is better than what they produce in the studio. I'm not trying to bash their studio work, but they're just so damn good on stage. If you get a chance, check out "Cloud Factory" and "Bad Water" live. They're both from the same show.
Also, another band worth checking out is Unleash the Archers. "Awakening" or "Tonight We Ride".

The drummer has a laptop with the studio track that has been stripped of them playing, but has the intro the harmonies and 2nd guitar parts ect and a metronome which is what they hear in the in ear monitor. they play to the backing parts and keep on time EVERY TIME live. They started this a long time ago for intros even when they had the 2nd guitarist. Songs like No Hoard of Value have intros and songs like Cpt Clock has the ticking, Sit stay and Words of Wisdom have leadins etc etc. when the Original guitarist left, they left some 2nd guitar parts on the backer as well. She does the voices live and has delay on it. sometimes they leave harmonies but she has to be dead on to use them so sometimes they are off. These are products and have to be clean. if you want to hear how close they are every night, just listen to any good bootleg cell phone video. NO POST production touch ups at all on those. They nail it NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. Some nights are off and you can see her messing with the ear piece and struggle. But that is LIVE MUSIC. and what makes it worth going to a show rather than just listening to a MP3 all the time.

Yes they are refugees of sorts, they had to flee their homes in Eastern Ukraine because of the war. They live in Western Ukraine now, but that's not what this song is about.
I agree, lyrics matter, especially with Jinjer. Tatiana has begged fans to pay attention to the lyrics.
Tatiana has said that she has seasonal depression. A perennial plant is one that dies in the winter and then grows back in the spring. In this song she uses the cycle of life in nature as a metaphor for what her depression feels like in the winter. Every year nature dies and is frozen in 'a breathless paradise' until it is reborn in the spring. Likewise in the winter she feels dead or in a state of coma, then in the spring she is reborn as a new person, rising up from the ashes of her roots.
They have written some songs about the war they fled: When Two Empires Collide, Home Back and Sit Stay Rollover

For all the commenters talking about the song as a metaphor for seasonal depression... awesome!!! Right on the money!!! Not only does Tati sing beautifully about it in this song but, if you watch her physically as she sings, she's performing it at the same time: example, (starting at 10:45): " enjoying coma...", then, "rising from the ashes of my roots..", she rises from the platform like a plant being reborn! Genius!!!

The thing with Tatiana is when she writes song a lot have double meaning yeah ok the song is about the seasonal rebirth of nature but it could also have to do with the changes that the people in the Ukraine are trying make from the ashes of our roots WE WILL RISE TO LIVE AGAIN? Metal music is a delicate balance between noise and music. There are definitely some bands that fall more into the "noise" category, while others play it too safe and stay entirely on the music side, which makes it more rock than metal. I think Jinjer walk that line perfectly, and shows the best of both sides.

In this one she has some vocal doubling; feed a tap with a couple milliseconds delay through a pitch shifter and back to the mix as a harmony for certain parts. That and little delay or reverb, but it's live and not post. I've seen fancam and the harmonies are there. That kind of doubling effect is easily automated with the click track from Vlads laptop and midi commands to the rack gear..

As a truck driver, perennials are plants that come back year after year, annuals do not. I had no idea of this until I started this 6 years ago. LOL

They were selling that suit at shows on their last US tour for $500. I would have bought it but it didn't make it to Seattle.

The thing with lyrics for most metalheads is that they are essentially "optional". A lot of times you can't understand what they are saying anyway (depends on the particular vocalist and the listener's ability to understand that vocalist, seriously, it's like picking up on another language after hearing it enough) which is why they used to ALWAYS come with the lyrics in the cassette or CD liners. I remember from Metallica, to Slayer, to Cannibal Corpse, they all had the lyrics included. It has been so long since I bought either of those I don't know if that is even done anymore. Lyrics have always ranged from serious political and personal topics, to fantasy or sci fi themes, to murderous or satanic, to whatever else under the sun and beyond... essentially anything and everything, nothing is sacred or taboo. Usually what is most important to a majority of metalheads is whether or not if they like how it sounds. Lyrics, no matter how good or bad, take a back seat to the music (or sometimes noise, literally) and how it connects with the listener. Jinjer is one of really nice ones with a great sound (they've always sounded great, and arguably are getting even better) AND some actual well written lyrics a normal person can relate to. They are easily one of my favorite bands to listen to currently.

For another good live Jinjer performance, try Outlander live. She rocks the dreads well in that one.

The energy of the entire band on stage is really intense. They are great performers all around. They only really seem to play festivals like this or small bars in the US from what I was able to find. I was going to go see them before all this corona nonsense got started. I will just have to wait even longer, it seems.
EDIT: I would recommend "I Speak Astronomy" as well if you want to hear a more 'prog' kind of sound out of them. I really love that song.

During "Pisces" recording they used effects and did some post production after.
On the real live concerts they claim to use only some slight delay.

The song has a double meaning. It is talking about how plants die in the winter only to come back to life in the spring. She uses that as a metaphor for the depression she feels in the winter, but she knows she too will come back to life. Btw, the name of the song gives away the part about the plants.

It's literally about nature, or trees more specifically, evergreen trees or "perennials" "die" in winter and are restored in the spring. Not actually about depression

It is about depression. Tatiana suffers with seasonal depression and is using nature as a metaphor. So technically its both.
