Long Tube Header Install - 370Z/G37 Detailed DIY

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.พ. 2025
- This video is a detailed DIY on how to install long tube headers on the VQ37 engine in your 370Z or G37. Long tube headers are an excellent way to improve the sound of the exhaust note, decrease the weight of the car, and increase peak horsepower through the concept of exhaust siphoning.
This install is not for the faint of heart, as the bolts holding the header to the engine block are very difficult to access. This is not an install for anyone who hasn't worked on their car before. With the right tools however, and following the detailed steps in this video, this project is more than doable.

@@thecarizon504 any tips on installing these? I'm about to order long tubes and I'm planning on installing them myself
@@thecarizon504 did you notice a big difference over test pipes?
@@v36vhr no big difference in feel at least from just installing them. Much more noticable difference in weight though. The only way to tell is look at the car performance tuned before amd after.
WISH ME LUCK my G37's getting them and the rest of the ISR set this Saturday, just wanted to get a sneak peek, awesome video!
How did it go with your install? I just did my 370z it was a pain but worth it. Now I need a tune to remove CEL
I had the honor of going at it twice. For anyone installing isr long tube headers, please use your oem gaskets. Don't use the crap gaskets that come with the headers. It will leak very badly.
I just did mine and is throwing a CEL. Did you get that and do you know how to get it removed?
Great video as always, I always use your videos as guides. You definitely are very thorough and I feel slightly more confident tryin this on Saturday.... Also congrats on goin SC!
I also made a detailed video on how to do this installation, but the carizon is the goat for making this
Informative video. For anyone doing this, you may want to crimp those wires instead of soldering especially given their location that is prone to heat and vibration
I crimped mine and they are very secure when I tug on them.
@@sfasiere6737hey how did it go crimping them ?! For some weird reason my mechanic hard wired and crimped my extension but it doesn’t want to work !!
@@roadtoamilli1680 There are 4 possibilities -
1. There are 2 black wires for each A/F sensor and they are not interchangeable.
2. The sensors may be covered in anti seize.
3. Don't forget to torque all the sensors.
4. A/F and O2 sensors are not interchangeable.
These are everything I avoided for my sensors to work. I drove for more than 5 hours and still don't have a check engine light.

Yuup I made up my mind about installing headers... I’m taking it to a shop and let them deal with the headache
Not a bad move imo.
Amen, I did short tube and 14 hours later and multiple cuts and massive cursing later it was done. but love the results
Have you tune your car to get the CEL removed?
@@etejeda1984 I have never had a CEL with this setup
I thought by installing your long tube headers and deleting the cats would throw a CEL? Maybe I have a bad sensor then of it should not cause a CEL?
@@etejeda1984 long tube headers, yes. That is why I did short with high flow cats from fast intentions
Ok. Yea I was asking for those who did LTH. Thanks though
It's an amazing video but i cannot splice a wire do yk of any good extensions for the o2 that people use?
I wanna drop this info in there for VHR owners:
- Fast Intentions long tubes are the WORST long tubes for the engine: they are too narrow of pipes and non-equal length.
- PPE Engineering is the best, they are equal-length and the right diameter piping. I suggest black ceramic coating for heat management.
- If you are on a budget, ISR long tubes are a good second choice. They are about 50% equal-length so still better than the FI headers.
I’m running PPE’s on my Nismo as well. I love them.
My friend & I used to live a few doors down from you in that same community. I still have only done K&N drop ins to this day... :\

Thanks for the video, really helped me install my headers and high flow cats on my 2014 Q60.
have you noticed any issues with extending the wires on the primary o2 sensors?
Probably the best DYI video Header install for the VQ lol. What’s the torque specs for the studs and bolts?
At first I was like dang that looks a lot like where I used to live in Texas. Then I noticed the road signs.. I used to live right near there, small world!
Left to loosen the bolts on the heat shield right? I’m having a issues where all 3 bolts rounded when I was attempting to remove them and the driver side is the same way. No one shows them removing the bolts. I would assume it’s to the left. But this issue leads to rounded bolts. Can’t even put an Extractor socket on it.
It is to the left yep, normal thread pattern.
Currently about to do an install but waiting to get tuned before I do so I don’t mess up my engine
You’re vq isn’t gonna blow just because you added long tubes. I don’t know why people are so scary when modding cars. You’ll be fine with no tune. It won’t perform as good as it could but you won’t die
It shouldn't mess up the engine if you don't run it for a long time without the tune. Also it would be better to do the tune after.
I just installed my isr long tubes on my g37. It took me about 10 hours. It was a lot of work but I did it myself
any advice
@@alexcastro5081 hahaha take your time, d o the passengers side first to build your confidence. Soak all the manifolds bolts with pb blaster the day before, you can't use enough of it. I was thinking about doing PPE Longtube on my 350z do you think a lift would make this install easier?
One of the best header intall vids I've seen. anyone know the main diff between long vs short tube headers? just the sound or?
Long tubes allows for siphening, which means more power in the higher RPM range. Shorties are cheaper and allow for customizeability in terms of giving you the option to choose your own down pipes/cats.
@@thecarizon504 thank you for the info 👍

Hey bro nice Video , am thinking about adding some shorty headers for my g37. Will I see benefits in hp and what about cel , thank you in advance
You won't feel much of a difference but headers will definitely bring up the power. Long tubes are good for +20-30bhp after a tune. Not familiar with the gains seen by shorties but they are generally less than long tubes.
You should only see a cell if you remove your cats.
The Carizon thank you , what about the sound will it make is raspy
The Carizon I have order the shorties header for my g , is it worth it over the stock header. I know that long tube make better hp than the than shorties , but am not a big fan of loud exhaust sound
Thank you doing my headers on my g on Friday
Are you going to change the exhaust headers manifold? Fastintentions says to re use the gasket, do you think it's a good idea? Eugene says I have a leak on driver's side and I don't know if re tight headers or put a new gasket this time
I am also experience a potential leak. Can't hear anything, but the afr's are off a point suggesting a header leak. Could be the sensors though. My recommendation would be to change the gasket.
@@thecarizon504 I put a pair of new sensors and it got just a bit better. After flooring it and stopping or going slow I started to notice fuel smell (like a cold start if you stand outside in the back) so yes, re using the gaskets may not be a good advice from fastintentions
How many feet do you use in both sides for extend the 02 sensor. ? I going to do this next week on my G37xs

Does it sound more raspier
Great video but those are NOT crescent wrenches. They are open/box end wrenches. Crescent are adjustable.
Shorty or long??
It sounds amazing
Long
Can’t you see? Lol
this was hella helpful! nice vid! Only question is why did you reuse the exhaust gasket? Since you already had them off why not replace?
Wasn't provided with spares and didn't want to wait for additional gaskets in. The header gaskets I've also heard are reusable, but I would always aim to replace when doing exhaust work.

Mine seem fine no issue that I know of yet.
Great tutorial!!
i get same harness kit =:) , do u have any issue when u extended o2 sensor????
Why do you need to reorder the the studs, were the header manufacturers too lazy to make a plate that lined up with the original pattern?
Amazing video. I look at my 370z engine compartment and touch nothing. I live in California is there such a thing as California emissions legal headers?
As long as it has a bung for the upper o2's and you don't pull out the catalytic converters you should be ok. That limits your options to just the short headers.
@@thecarizon504 Excellent I did not know that. I will look around for short headers to include o2 sensors. I really appreciate it. Great video.
Love your videos! Just one question on header installation. You never comment on York specks of header bolts/nuts. Is it a concern?

Good job. Are your headers ceramic coated??? If they are, you may want to remove the heat wrap as they will warp the tubes due to overheating. Good luck with your project.
Nope, just sprayed with VHT paint to prevent rust.
@@thecarizon504 great. Enjoy your ride...
Anywhere that I can read more about this? I am about to purchase a pair of used PPE LTH next week, and they are both ceramic coated and heat wrapped.
@@HirschPower Call PPE, talk to Eric or Paul and they will tell you that ceramic coated headers don't need wrapping at all. Wrapping will deform the tubes and crack them to the point where they will leak and will subsequently have to be replaced. I went through that and it"s a very expensive lesson...
@@MyBlkG35 Shit. How long did you have them on your car? The guy I’m buying from says they were on his car for about 1k miles, and they were on the original owner’s car for about 7k miles.
Where did you buy those intake hose's? I need high performance replacements for mine?
Why did you reusable the oem gasket? The gasket is alot smaller than the header runners
it's the same size as the head exhaust ports, so it doesn't matter
I just bought the Motordyne long tube headers & im not sure if I would be able to do this myself lol. Are there any particular types of shops you’d recommend like a muffler shop or a dealer?
Dealervwould be ideal but it will be expensive.
Nice headers 🔥🔥 there probably gonna be loud 👍🏽 like ur good to btw nice nice

did you have the car tuned after installing or does this not require a tune to drive like normal
If you are swapping out your catalytic converters yes, I would get the car tuned.
I had test pipes before so not as big a problem.
@carizon Who did you get it tuned with to remove the CEL since you deleted your catalytic converters?
Hey! Another banger of a video but I have questions I’m new to building cars n I got a z. I installed a borla s type exhaust and I’ve been driving it for a bit and it sounds great but I want a deeper sound and more power. Would headers be the way to go? Also with these headers would I have to change the exhaust I have? Or how would I figure it out? If you answer this thank you so much for your help n time😭🤘🏽
For deeper sound, I would try resonators to pull out the rasp. I am not sure on if they work with the exhaust you have, but an exhaust shop could always put on compatible flanges.

How tf do i take out the heat shield
What brand headers are these?
Obx
quick question - since I believe you are in the DFW area - does the LTH pass emissions without issue? Was there anything special you had to do to ensure it passed inspection.
I have been running test pipes for two years. It will throw a code for the cats which will cause you to fail inspection, however if you get the car tuned they can turn the circuitry off that checks the o2 limits. This means the car won't throw a CEL which is all the inspectors really look for.
@@thecarizon504 Thanks for the heads up - between the FI catback you installed - which I want to add to my Z; I've been on the fence about getting either LTHs or HFCs. I'm not a 100% sure about SC'ing the Z or just doing FBO; but watching your vids is making me want to SC the Z; I am really excited to see how your SC install goes - bc I haven't seen as much detail as you add to your vids on the interwebz or the Z forums.
Oh nice , now I’ll just do this all myself
What header wrap did you use, and hows it holding up.thanks
It was some off brand wrap from amazon, I just searched for "header wrap".
And it holds up unless you touch it (for exhaust work).
longtube headers are amazing!! I got isr longtube headers installed not the brand u went with. Did you feel a big difference?
Maybe a mild difference in power on the top end. Only way to know for sure is to tune and syno it but FI claims 10-15hp in gains.
How Was The Fitment of Header? You had to modify something? Or work with no problems? I ask you because i about 2 days ago
Hey man wanted to ask i have a g37s coupe rear wheel drive will the isr longtube headers fit on it?
?
Will they fit on a g37s?
Tell me about performance, was there any improvement?
None noticeable. The only way to tell is on a dyno but you won't really feel it.
@@thecarizon504 That what i was told, not worth the hassle if engine is equipt with newer style OEM headers. Probably will go with motordyne type test pipes when hi-flow cats fail...
Do you know if the 370z/ g37 headers would fit in an m37 properly?
Probably not.
Hey man you really didn't have to slice through the 02 Sensors to make them longer. There's a 02 sensor extension harness for Long tube headers. That save you time to do all that work and you could just plug and play the wiring harness.
That harness is at least 150
I'm here watching this & I don't even have a Nissan anymore.
Did you reuse the oem header gaskets or use new gaskets?
always get new gaskets.
new ones because you risk a leak otherwise
Does your Z run on a tune? Could you swap these same long tube headers into a stock tune and would it work fine?
You will have to tune to prevent check engine lights since the catalytic converter is deleted.
@@thecarizon504 Ok thank you.

@@thecarizon504 any idea why they dont fit? they both a vq37? the same way you relocated your studs to fit yours i hear it can be done to fit them
Do you notice the infamous rasp hiss when rpms come back down to idling speeds ?
You know I was REALLY hopeful this would elliminate the rasp from the test pipes but it is still there, no change.
are there any goo short tube headers for a 370z?
I hear Z1 makes good shorties.
The Carizon I thought those are made for 350’s
Their site claims it fits the 370Z
Pretty much any header made for a 350z can fit a 370z/G37. Only thing with using the Tomei or Z1 is you just have to get DE flange test pipes
Are these equal length?
Yes FI long tubes are supposed ti be equal length.
I just ordered fast intentions catback and test pipes but am torn by max gains from the headers. Are they worth it?
They only provide an additional 5whp of gain over test pipes for natural aspiration. Unless you are really chasing the numbers, it wouldn't be worth it.
@@thecarizon504 Thanx man 👍
How much horsepower did you gain from this install?
I didn't dyno before and after the test pipes but it's not unreasonable to assume maybe around 10-20 if replacing the catalytic converters. As much as 30+ if your car hasn't been tuned yet and you go for an aggressive tune.
No tune is required after the install
