Actually, having an express lane where you pay an extra 50 cents per item would be a good idea, those who want to pay extra can do so if they are in a rush.

@Myopic - If everyone were in the urgent line, then why wouldn't you just use the empty normal line and pay less? There would always be more people in the normal line than in the urgent line, because every time lines equalize customers would choose the less expensive one.
