I recently started strapping it to the back of my kayak upside down rather than taking it apart when I'm on the water. I use a bungee cord in addition to the strap, so it works perfectly for securing it to the kayak deck behind my seat. I also run the strap through the wheels in case they fall off.
Hi Bob! Thanks for the review I'm a new kayaker and shopping for a cart this review pretty well cemented why this one would be worth the extra cash over a DIY cart using the scupper holes of my kayak!
Good video, very well put together and you speak well. I own the c-tug with the narrower wheels and it works very well over solid or semi-solid ground. However, on sugar sand, as found on the Jersey shore, is a complete nightmare. I would suggest doing an updated video showing use on the sugar sand. I have read too many negative comments that the wider tires also do not work well on soft sand. I will upgrade if I see a few videos showing the wider tires in actual use on the soft sandy terrain. thanks
toomany hobbies thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately we don't have Sugar sand in Washington State. But I've had in some deeper sand that it did fine in.
I have the sand-track model; bigger wheels.... AMAZING cart! I ordered it by mistake; wanting the one with smaller wheels so I cold store it in my kayak. Im keeping the bigger one for better portaging. I flip it over and strap it to my WS Tsunami165 and then Im off!
@@robertjames-life4768 Only plastic? Feels like that would crackle and make plastic noise on pebbles and asfalt. I need to go stealthily through my neighborhood in early mornings. You think this will do that or would air filled tires be better?
I have one with the wheel widening attachment, but still have trouble on soft sand. I take the kayak to a public beach where the sand is sifted by a machine to remove any sharp objects. The sand get fluffed up and when i have to pull the kayak up hill to the car, the wheels dig in.
Has anyone put silicon or oil on the wheel inners to stop wear and tear. Is it ok to spray a little to help it roll free and not wear with salt water dried inside wheel hub. Just asking before I do it. Normally run wet. Any help from you is much appreciated... Have two of these tugs work great. Purchased after my old wheels damaged my kayak split the drain plug section. Brilliant bit of kit. Only trouble I have is lining up the wheels when placing the kayak onto the wheels. Get used to it. Straps are fine. Thanks great video...
I find the difference between a cheap kayak cart and an expensive one is whether or not it folds in on itself in the direction it wheels. And that really really bugs me.
@@chickcozy-mason7116 yeah, it will start to fold if it gets caught on a rock and if it starts to fold it gets all off balance and usually drops the kayak.
I've got two of these carts: one with the regular wheels and one with the sand tracks. I live on the south end of Phuket Island in Thailand and sea kayak three or four times a week at different beaches. The sand here is composed primarily of ground coral and is quite granular and sharp. The plastic axles and bushings for the wheels are being ground to dust. The bottom side of the axles is wearing such that just holding up the cart without the kayak and spinning the wheels produces a large side to side wobble and just a few revolutions of the wheel. Rolling resistance is noticeably increased. The cart is basically a sound idea and it does break down quickly and goes in a hatch but, for the money, a longer lasting axle/bushing system is needed. I do not recommend this cart.
I have Old Town Predator xl. It's 13.2ft long, and probably a fair bit wider than your sleek boats. Heavy too Would this C tug unit be big enough to cart my Predator kayak, do U think?
I have a sit on top kayak with an open storage spot to the back. Do you think, when it’s broken down, it would fit? How heavy is it? I live up on Camano and just want to be able to go out on my own.
Not heavy. I put mine on the rear of my kayak the wheels upside down so plates on the tug are face down then bungee in place. Should fit on your kayak in one piece. I had on my tarpon 100 and now tarpon 140 with no issue but now on the 140 I can break down and store in the front of my kayak as have large hatch.
Doug Hansen yes, they cinch from the top. Many have had issues with the straps but I’ve not. I don’t know why people just don’t use their own favorite straps?
Robert James Adventure-Lifestyle-Travel Yes i mean under the hull. I have a old town predator pdl and I’m looking for something that I can leave on the kayak attached under the hull. So I can just launch it and go, when I’m done just pull up to shore and pull it. Im tiered of scraping up the hull every time I go to lauch and take out the kayak at a boat lauch. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
Brandon Peters hmm, you can try it, I don’t think it’ll hurt the cart. You may also want to try carrying a small movers pad, harbor freight has them for less than 10.00, they fold up fairly compact.
Would this cart work for an OLD TOWN Discovery 133k canoe? It's quite wide at 40.5 inches and want to be sure it would fit well on the top of this cart.
I have an Ascend FS12 which was discontinued and for good reason. One is that none of the kayak trolleys work with it, not even the Ascend trolley that I purchased shortly after getting the kayak. This is a sit in kayak that has a recessed hull with a spine running from end to end. I love the kayak for it's stability and storage capabilities. I tried the C-Tug trolley which still would not work on my kayak due to the shape of my hull. Then I tried reversing the pads and glory be it worked. Hope this helps other kayakers with the same issues.
Gday Mike Bishop, cheers for your information I have tested it and can confirm that swapping the pads works for kayaks with a defined V shaped hull end to end www.kfdu.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51952&sid=0d10ea8aa9492bcc33808ee1c3d159d1
I bought one, and have had mixed results. I've had the pads and the wheels fall off a few times. Maybe I just need more practice with it, but so far I'm not liking it much.
Wheels you need to snap to lock push down on the locking pin until it clicks. The pads shouldn't fall off fit the pads into the slots on their side then turn to flat they place themselves into the frame on their own shouldn't fall out.
Good review. I’m thinking of getting one of these for taking my sup and daughters surfboard to our favourite beach which is a good 25 minute walk down s tough tarmac lane. Considering the newer sand wheels have you tried these at all? Ignore the angry idiot too 😂
I have an old town predator 13 and have a problem on rough terrain with the cart falling over. Any suggestions on a better way to secure the kayak to the cart?
TheMandalore04 -sorry for the late reply. I'd look for Yakima Kayak Heavy Duty straps on Amazon. They do double duty for car top straps too. Hardware is rubber coated so the won't scratch you paint.
I place the straps through the handles on my kayak so wheels are central on the bottom of my kayak then do the strap up pull quite tight this should hold your wheels in place I haven't had any instance of kayak coming off the wheels . Check the straps are threaded correctly on the fixings maybe slipping as incorrectly routed?.. hope you have sorted.
Bought one for a canoe trip and it was the biggest piece of crap. Unless you are just going from your vehicle to the water and only a short distance then stay away from these. We met up with another couple on that trip who had the pneumatic wheels version of this cart which by this time I was wishing I had bought however when talking to them about theirs they hated it as well and were having similar problems. Probably great for kayaks but horrible for canoes.
@@chickcozy-mason7116 it depends on what kind of kayak you have but the can be hard to center under your kayak and you take a lot of time adjusting and readjusting. The wilderness systems carts are the best but expensive. There are some good knock offs that are a lot cheaper.

Hi Tim, the big problem most have is with the straps. If you learn the trick to them they’re fine. If you don’t like them just use one you like.

What are the wheels like? Do they sound plasticy and make a lot of noise when you are on surface roads or is the middle strip made of rubber?
