  • In this video I discuss how I maintain my trails with My Kubota Compact Tractor. (L 3901). Steep trails require lots of work at times due to heavy rain fall and erosion problems.

    I am amazed at how easy you make this look. Keeping roads and drives smooth and level is probably one of the most challenging task that a landowner can tackle. Keep up the good work and keep these videos coming. Thanks. Tim

    Great job, Team Morgan! Just purchased my first tractor, a compact Kubota L3901 HST. Can’t wait for it and the implement to arrive here at the Red Dog Lodge! Really appreciate all the fun and informative videos that you folks put out here. I join the thousands of regular viewers and commend you on all you hard work!! I know it’s a labor of love. Best regards, always, to you (Mike) and your extraordinary family! Continue with you hard work, informative videos, have fun and be safe!

    so glad to have stumbled across your channel! I just bought (july) a larger property and am new to ALL of this. Have so many similar issues and needs. I have learned a lot so far. many thanks for posting this stuff! I have gone back and forth about where a tractor falls on my priority list (tractor, bass boat, ATV, UTV, pick up truck (done! lol), snowmobile etc lol) and seeing from your videos, having one is a must! which is great because I really want to sell the one that came with the property (1960's Ford) and get a new(er)Kubota (or Kioti). Thanks Again!

    I have done quite a bit of ATV trail riding on state land with designated maintained trails here in Ohio and a practice they use to cut down on erosion is very similar to what you are doing, but they go one step further. You will see every so often in a place where they have the "notch" in the side of the trail there is a 3/4-1" thick rubber flap that has been buried into the trail on an angle sticking up about 3-4 inches to force the water over the edge at that point. When you run over it, it just folds down and flips back into place....Seems to work really well!!!

    Mike,I've got an L46 Kubota and recently bought a box blade to create some new trails on our property (160 acres). You have taught me so much on using a tractor and a box blade and I really appreciate you sharing all the things you do to maintain your property.

      We live in Nashville Tennessee, but the farm we bought is in Watertown Tennessee, about 45 miles southeast of our home. Right now it's recreational. I've set up a pistol & rifle range, we hike the property and enjoy the outdoors. We hunt deer and turkey too. I bush hog approximately 35 acres while the rest is forested. Your videos are teaching me a lot about land management. We hope to build a home there soon.

I have no tractor just a 4x4 Polaris 500 EFI Ranger, snow plow & winch & lots of logging chains & 4 chain saws. I would love to have a tractor but the ground is too steep, I do the best I can. Thanks, Bob.

    I had the same problem with my driveway before i paved it. I found it better to grade the road going up hill because the water was washing the gravel down the hill.

  • @jasonmccook843
    @jasonmccook843 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You may want to add a few small gravel (3" - 4" ht by 1' -1.5' wide) berms on your trail between the tail outs to slow the water down. Other than my 2 cents keep up the videos enjoy watching them.

    Extend the water bars ( not sure if that is what you called it, I call it a gully) all the way across the road at an angle so the road will look something like this ===//===//===//===//. They only need to be about 6” deep and 3’ wide ( shallow and wide). Then fill the gullies with crushed stone and top with road base. Since you only add stone and road base to the gullies or water bars It’s a cheap solution and will help tremendously with water drainage. Keep up the good work, love the videos.

    If that was a driveway or impotant trail, I would spend my time digging into that bank and widening the road, put ditches along the bank and slant the road towards the bank ( no sliding off that way). That is a lot of work, but my wife says I'm crazy because thats my favorite kind of project. Of course I don't have as much land as you do, you have to pick your battles. (good excuse to own more equipment though). Good luck and stay safe.

    Hi Mike, another timely and terrific video! I hope to get a box scraper this fall to smooth out my gravel driveway. Question: can the scraper bust up tree roots, if the tines are set to a very shallow depth and you grade it nice and slow with repeated passes? Thanks, and congrats on 5K subscribers!

    Have you ever looked at using a grader scraper attachment for your tractor? Jason on the HollisFarms youtube channel has a bunch of videos of him using one to maintain roads. Also, there is a good video called Maintaining Forest Roads somewhere on here that gives good info on how to make a proper water bar. My personal experience with where to make a water bar is to find where the water starts cutting a rut at, then go about 10-20 feet up hill from there and make the water bar. This cuts the water off the road before it gets moving fast enough to start carrying away material.

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have seen those scrapers and they seem to work well, I just like the box scraper because it carries material along and fills in the low spots

    Why not take pressure-treated 2 x 6 and a couple 2 x 4" and screwed together and put on an angle across the road to collect your water for the run off ?

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We have used something like that at work on steep gravel roads but buried old conveyor belting leaving some sticking up. You can still plow snow over top of it

    Ever tried making some type of "speed bump" so the water can follow your drain you have created? Good videos! Should look into a grapple for your front end loader make you wonder how you lived with out it. I have one for the mahindra 2538 well worth the money specially picking up the dead trees and moving them out the way.

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans

      Thats what I did it's just hard to see on video, and I don't make them perpendicular, kind of on a 45. The grapple is my next purchase, I have to get the 3rd function valve first. I know Im going to love it for what I do, cleaning up the woods, firewooding that kind of stuff

    Looks like a beautiful piece of property, how many acres do you have?. I don't see any dead Ash trees, on my 10 acres (northern Virginia) I have 70 or more standing amongst Hickory, Pin oak, White oak and Maples. I germinated seeds from a giant PA Sycamore couple years ago and they are now 10 feet tall.

    I'm not a professional grader but I have heard that it is better to slope the road toward the inside until you are at a place to turn it over the bank. You can better control the water that way.

    When you use the box blade do you use 4x4?

  • @TheTorkerman
    @TheTorkerman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike, how much downward pressure do you think is required for this box blade to be effective? I have a smaller Kubota garden tractor, and was thinking about building a scraper of this style, thanks.

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no real down pressure on the 3 point except the weight of the attachment. But with the rippers on the box scraper it kind of pulls itself into the ground if that makes sense.

  • @waymorhd

    Good video, Mike! I have a Kubota and a box blade. I also have lots of trails to maintain, which got extremely rutted after our local flooding. Are you using the rippers? If so, how deep are you ripping? I also have a gill pulverizer. Which one would you use if you had both? Thanks! BTW, I'm local to you. Any chance I could get in touch for some consulting?

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do use the rippers but not real deep, with a box blade I like taking multiple light passes taking just a little material with you and making long runs if that makes sense. Also yes if your local I would be happy to take a look at your property. Maybe send me a message on our Facebook page Outdoors With The Morgans, or you can message here on TH-cam, Thanks
