That comment about the bass was referring to the reputation for this album (And Justice For All) having virtually no bass guitar that you can hear.

AJFA was the first album Metallica released after the death of Cliff Burton, their bass player on their 1st three albums. Jason Newstead was chosen to replace him, but had not earned the trust or respect of Hetfield and Ulrich yet.

Little piece of trivium: “And Justice for All” was Metallica’s first album after Cliff died. They admitted it was the angriest they’d been as a band. The whole album is aggressive in way that reflects pure anger at life and death. You can hear their individual struggles and frustrations mixed with their collective frustration in this song very clearly. In this way, I find it to be one of their best songs.

the bass thing is in reference to the fact that this album hides most of the bass work and it's generally kind of infamous for just that fact amongst the metal community. there's even a video of a guy who re-recorded a much louder bass part for the album and he plays thru it here on youtube. still a killer album even without the bass turned up..

  • @sumonjamal1653

The "bass" comment was a joke because the track (and the 1988 album 'And justice for all') had the bass faded out! (They compensated w/ guitar reverb) ... The story was: this was the first album recorded since the death of Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton in a tour bus accident in 1986... The traumatized Metallica decided to carry on and hired new bassist Jason Newsted in late '86 to tour and recorded an EP of covers released in 1987. But the transition for the new bassist was a tough one...
While on the road between 1986 to 1988, Jason Newsted was subjected to drunken hazing by the Metallica camp... If James, Lars or Kirk missed Cliff... something bad usually happened to Jason... He said the first night, they broke into his hotel room and dumped his stuff out the window after flipping his bed over... "Welcome to the band, pal!"
Jason found himself inundated w/ rumors that he was gay... he found his room charged w/ the band's drinking bill the night before... Looking back, the bassist admits that he understood that the band wanted to know if he was tough enough to handle the less-than-ideal situation.
Guitarist Kirk Hammett admitted that the bassist was made the scapegoat of the loss of Cliff Burton...
But when the band was recording 'And justice for all' in 1988, Jason Newsted finished his tracks before Metallica went back on tour... James and Lars oversaw the mixing process and the drummer Lars Ulrich demanded that Jason's bass tracks be faded out so that his drums were more focused... the rhythm guitars be the dominant sound.
Of course, when Jason heard the final mixes on tour, he was "livid"... but the album was already done, and he didn't have any power within Metallica to make any changes... being the "new kid"...
'And justice for all' did incredibly well in sales... 'One' became the first Metallica music video... and 'Harvester of sorrow' became a fan fave because it went over great in concert... There were better tracks - 'Eye of the beholder'... 'Blackened'... but the album was also very long w/ extended jamming... The 10 minute 'To live is to die' was a tribute to Cliff Burto, and mostly instrumental w/ a brief spoken word section.

Speaking on the comment you mentioned, The Justice album was the first album with Jason Newsted after Cliff died. As the story goes, during production, Lars told the engineers to turn the bass down until you can barely hear it, then turn it down some more. There were some serious emotions on display for this one. Still a great album, however. Very drum heavy.

  • @mfree80286

Harvester is one of a few Metallica songs that needs the live performance, the album track is too mechanical. It's slower, heavier, crunchier... and so it needs the bounce and swagger that the live performance brings it. And that awkward pause before the last lyric section ("......All have said their prayers") is actually in there because it's a several seconds long pause on stage that just funnels the crowd's anticipation directly onto the stage for the band to feast on.

I'd like to make a Metallica suggestion to you. It's actually a cover song from the band 'Budgie". When I saw Metallica in August 1994 in Miami, that was the song they opened with and their version of it just hits hard! They released it on the B side on two singles from this "In Justice For All" album and officially released it on their cover album Garage Inc. It's catchy, energetic and relevant. A song about a persons relationship with money and what to do with it once you have it. Are you reckless? Do you give it away? Do you trust people etc...? It was remastered in 2018.

The comment around bass made me laugh hysterically! That could’ve been taken a few ways one of which song is missing bass. The second part of it is that Jason Newsted is their new bass player for this album. Once the album was done, the story goes in the mixing room Lars turned down all of the bass levels so his drums were more prevalent throughout the whole album.

Metallica is a deep deep rabbit hole my dude. The first 3 albums had the legendary Cliff Burton on bass. The entire Master Of Puppets album showcases how a great bass player (and songwriter) makes all the difference. Cliff was killed when their bus crashed while on tour for the Master Of Puppets album. Their music was never the same. This album has Jason Newsted on bass. More recently they got Robert Trujillo. Rob was in Suicidal Tendencies back in the 80s/90s, a punk/funk band. "Harvester of Sorrow" is a song by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 28, 1988, as the first single from their fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). The song's subject matter refers to a man who descends into madness, taking out his anger on his family. At the end of the song, it is hinted his sanity snaps and he murders them. In my opinion this was their greatest album. Lyrics below:
My life suffocates, planting seeds of hate
I've loved, turned to hate, trapped far beyond my fate
I give, you take this life that I forsake
Been cheated of my youth, you've turned this lie to truth
    Anger, misery
    You'll suffer unto me
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
    Harvester of sorrow
Pure black looking clear, my work is done soon here
Try getting back to me, get back which used to be
Drink up, shoot in, let the beatings begin
Distributor of pain, your loss becomes my gain
    Anger, misery
    You'll suffer unto me
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
    Harvester of sorrow
    All have said their prayers
    Invade their nightmares
    To see into my eyes
    You'll find where murder lies
    Infanticide

Funny about the bass comment. This whole album has the best sounding drums of any Metallica album. Also some are these song are so loved because you’d pop the cassette or CD in and drive or whatever. The song was part of something greater. Now everything is a single.

if you enjoy their heavier tracks, i really recommend the thing that should not be, eye of the beholder, fight fire with fire, and battery.

Two tracks you need to listen to and read the lyrics.
    'And Justice for All!'
    And
    'Eye of the beholder '
It's about the Justice and political system.

Have always loved Metallica and seen them 2x in concert. BUT, basically pulling the bass out and NEVER apologizing for it is kinda unforgivable in my book. The key in life to being good is not being a richard.

LOL, he wasn't "inserting race with the bass" (at least i don't believe). he most probably was making a joke about Jason Newsted, the bassist who got the job after Cliff Burton died, and who "whined", a LOT , particularly after this album, that "you can't hear the bass!" 🙂
