    Very well explained why summer prune! IMO too much winter pruning only encourages vigorous growth which may be fine for fruit trees age 3 years or less but for trees that have reached a comfortable height you should only need to prune as he has explained! If you enjoy getting up on a ladder to pick fruit and risking falling from that ladder then you can ignore what the man is saying just make sure your health coverage is well paid up!

      YES, You can do it in Winter... You have to "Prune Top" it. I waited 10+ years... Until I decided to CHOP THE TOP OFF.....Here: th-cam.com/video/AUBnRP3yC_M/w-d-xo.html

    Just found out about summer pruning today. I have no fruit trees but want to keep some along with my bees. The summer pruning makes sense. It promotes fruit spurs and also opens up for air flow.

    I just pruned my dwarf macintosh hybrid n July 17. I hope it wasn't too early. Last year I didn't prune and my apples were huge but not ripe.

    I never pruned that much. Always only 1/3 of last year grows in winter. The problem is my trees grows 6-8’ a year. 2 years later I have long branches. What to do now?

  • @radharcanna
    @radharcanna 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely job. Why did you leave the very long lower branches on the apple tree?

    • @FantaLakamaga
      @FantaLakamaga ปีที่แล้ว

      On a 10 years or less tree you keep more of the temporary branches(ones less than half the diameter of the trunk) low where they do not shade the scaffold branches.
      1: allows you to prune more aggressively to shape the upper scaffold branches
      2: encourages a sturdy trunk
      3: sweetens apples- leaves make sugar
      4: harvest an extra half bushel of apples every two years where they are super easy to maintain quality through organic bagging because of height- quality organic more than doubles the retail value
      5: children picking where you won't mind breakage because the branches are temporary
      6: easy to use props if the branches get overloaded- we 2×2 three foot tall props with two long nails sticking up like horns to rest the branch between near where the fruit gets heaviest.

    I just picked up a couple apple trees. Do these rules apply to potted apple trees that is going to be planted? Can I trim prior to planting in ground in the next couple of days? Or should I wait until mid summer to prune? It appears they are still in vigorous growth stage. Thanks

    'm living in MN ( zone 4 B ). I got some Asian pear trees. I watched a lot of clips about pruning .
    I'm confusing about that.
    What's different between summer pruning and winter pruning ? which one for more fruit and which one for shape

      Not really' you might have a heat stroke and you might not be around to find out if it works.

      Annitjay: Clipper cleaning - As a long time arborist I have a small or medium spray bottle in my truck. It is full of 70% alcohol from my pharmacy. And I saw one good tree man use Lysol spray. Your choice of flavors! There are other hand sanitizer sprays if you look around. Talk with nurses and health care people. Mine is left over from my wife's operation.

    Would like to know your location of these cuts, in relation to buds, leaves, etc. It looked random, which an arborist wouldn't do.
