dynamic link is for placing the duration/transport te picture from premiere/and keep the timeline settings :) When ur done in AE u export probably Prores HQ and it is done :)
Dynamic Link was created to have a live connection between the Comp and the Premiere Pro Timeline. If you're also rendering from After Effects, that defeats the whole purpose of Dynamic Link.
All "dynamic" stuff is currently so broken. If it was not for certain MOGRTs that I need to be flexible while editing, I wouldn't use any dynamic bs at all. I also learned the hard way that you need to render the more - shall we say - complicated (i.e. more than 10 layers and a couple of expressions) stuff straight from AE and use it as footage in PP. Sidenote on Media Encoder: Currently for me (using the final 2022 versions of everything; ongoing project and stuff...) Media Encoder from the side PP is useless for rendering timelines with MOGRTs, as it seems to ignore all expressions. All this is so sad. If it was not for the couple of MOGRTs that are the backbone of my efficiency MO, I'd be waving goodbye to Adobe as of now.
Personally I never used Dynamic Link. i never had any luck there and I need quick solution. I would always render my edits out of After Effects. I learned a new exporting format type to use when exporting out of after effects. I will experiment with Mov format save type from now on. Thanks Collin
It does not matter how fast your computer is, You should ALWAYS close Premiere when using any other big software. This is not only true for dynamic links.
@@VideoRevealed Kinda! But Dynamic Link never work well live. You must close Premiere to work with AE because Adobe never got right the GPU and live updates. Dynamic links works extremely well, but not for live updates. Even today, you must close completely Premiere to work with other applications. Also, the Dynamic links was design for group work in mind and not at the same system. A motion graphics designer works in some visual fx while and editor edits, and then the Dynamic link works like a charm, because AE and Premiere are in different computers. This is true with 3D software when using render farms, they are not designed to work on the same computer. Adobe has not yet figure out how to create live updates in one system without many problems. Adobe needs to understand how instances works and they are a mess, I had to help Adobe with a 10 years old problem that I show them in only line of code things get fixed, and it did in one of their software. Adobe is a mess company with smart people, they have the faster engine in Flash that takes half second in Adobe Animate to render while same animation in AE or Premiere 1 minute. Adobe is a mess and Dynamic link from Adobe is just a half-baked function that they give up long time ago in how to finished. With a simple like of code, they can fix this, but they are too busy migrating functions from one app to another and make Adobe product less user friendly. And yes, I never use Dynamic links because rendering a place holder for a visual FX in the Premiere timeline is present and future proof. I always tell people not to use use it, just create a empty place on the timeline, because it makes sense, and if you migrate to another editor, you don't have the problem with dynamic links. You are right, don't use dynamic links, they work well if the conditions are right or you will have nightmare's trying to figure out why things takes longer to render and not errors you can have. Dynamic links are great for one eco-system with a team environment or your will have problems with it. Typing in a phone sucks! I hope it makes any sense.
Hi I'm having a problem using dynamic link. This issue is that I added an audio track in after affects, but It will not play in premiere. Any idea how to get my audio to play? It plays fine in after affects, but not in Premiere. Thanks.
Rendering After Effects and importing the generated rendered movie assumes your after effects is complete and not a work in progress that evolves constantly. Also, you need to remember the After Effects outpiut file name (which is linked into Premiere) so after rendering After Effects, Premiere will get the updated video file. Modern versions of the suite support the "large" less-lossy video formats, but I am at CS6 (can't afford and refuse to pay for huge subscription fee for the Premium suits I have) doesn't so generating the after effects movie means 2 compression cycles for the movies and you do lose precision.
I don't fully agree with this - I think there are some moments in video editing where dynamic link is SUPER useful. The bottom line is, if you are doing medium-heavy post work that is performance-intensive, then yes prebuffer exports are the way to go. HOWEVER, for motion graphics-related things and stuff that is very light (basically you can determine this by checking in AE if your playback is close to real time) then dynamic links are insanely useful, as it removes the process of iterating exports, and on-the-go changing. Things like intro/outro logos, lower third texts, motion graphics transitions, subtitles without antialiasing, etc.
Thanks for the video on this, although I wish I'd seen it before I jumped down the DL rabbit hole yesterday for half the day. I ended up coming to the same conclusion as your recommendation and exporting the clip from AE and just adding it to the PP project. I was hoping to adjust the sound in an AE comp in PP, but it did not show the changes in AE after adding it in PP. Anyway, it's much more simple doing the import/export thing.
Actually there's an option in premiere pro It's called "Render and Replace" which is the same thing and that will unlink the clip from after effects and then you can't change anything in after effects But if you need to change anything you can undo that as well and change anything in after effects How about that ?
Helpful video! I have a question, when I try to send a clip from premiere pro that I’ve slowed down to after effects, the slowed down clip looks choppy in after effects. How can I fix this problem without exporting the clip too many times to where I loose quality? thank you!
No I don't. I got all excited when it came out but I found it still has issues tracking the footage well. Real roto still needs to be done with paths using something like Mocha.

I was forced into dynamic link workflow this past week and wreaked havoc on my system and my anxiety I said the hell with it and went back to the old ways!
Hey so i have a question and i cant find a suitable answer probably because this isnt a situation asked in the professional field. I make fan made animated music videos, and I tend to constantly use transitions and effects on just about every clips that is used. (e.g this th-cam.com/video/t4P0DClYwcw/w-d-xo.html) I was wondering what would be best for me to do, I prefer doing transition in AE because It easier for me to use the ae graph and I have more flexibility, plus since im used to it, It is 10x more faster then using premiere pro. would it be better to copy every sceneinto ae and export back to premiere, or dynamic link so whatever happened in ae take affect in premiere pro?
I would suspect it's just easier for you to stay in After Effects. None of those effects can be translated to native Premiere Pro effects so you'd have to use Dynamic Link, which has its own set of issues.
@@VideoRevealed thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it, it been stressing me out tryna figure out what would work best that this a relief off my shoulder.
Adobe should fix it, dynamic link has been there for years. I like to use the mogrt's in the Graphics panel. I like the look but I've just given up on using them embedded - and do as you do by creating a little standalone project just for them.
I can't even understand what you are talking about. I guess it's difficult for me to comprehend.. I just want to know how to easily effectively get rid of dynamic link error that popped up when I attempt to import video for editing in Adobe Photoshop. Thanks
After Effects really needs a total rework. And how does PPro consolidate projects with dynamic link ? Does it also consolidate AE projects along with its associated raw elements?
No, the Project Manager will not collect all that stuff. I suggest manually keeping everything in a single Project folder on your hard drive and backing that up.
I went from Avid Media Composer to PP specifically for the Adobe ecosystem. The type of projects we do frequently employ a tonne of AE and PS work. So it was a logical thing to switch (forced upon me by Avid’s very late support for my new MacPro). But I was dismayed to see how much Dynamic Link slowed down my timeline. Rendering only worked as long as I didn’t quit - and it was/is still too way too long to render. Awful. That said, I still use it to shuttle things to AE because it is such an efficient multi-clip export option. All your clips laid up and ready to go! Fantastic!! So my workflow is to send via DL and not return the same way. Also I duplicate what I’m sending in a separate video track so I still have my original edit intact. What I would like to see is a seamless return of a flat file to the same spot in the PP timeline. That should be simple code for Adobe to drop in as an option. As my partner just reminded me you can now render AE comps to a flat file that drops to the top of the same AE comp which may remove the need to render in PP. But that isn’t quite the right solution as it could lead to a bunch of alpha channel issues and a lot of confusion. Thx Colin!
Right-click and choose Restore Unrendered. If that's not available, it's because you moved something after handing off the clip to AE. If nothing else works, you just have to manually replace the clip.
Rendered - too many versions. Not good for too many changes. Storage consumption. Easy on PPro. Dynamic link - Good when there are too many back and forth. Good CPU and GPU is needed. Light on storage. Good up with memory leaks often.

ok colin, i like your tutorials and tips, but this one is a mixed bag, dynamic link is not solely a way to connect the 2 programs, some people can't afford the HD space for those unnecessarily huge files, yes i know storage is cheap and affordable, but some people have to rely on limited space where every megabyte counts, as a youtuber you already know this business relies on multiple projects being worked on simultaneously, if you're not doing this for a living but as a hobby, starting and finishing one project at a time, then yeah sure... but on limited resources... dynamic link is a BIG game changer, i like how adobe tries to stick to their own route when it comes to handling editing suites, but i'm sorry.... apps like davinci resolve and hitfilm just said "screw this headache, lets combine them" and this puts up an actual competition to adobe, maybe not right now... but surely down the line... sooner or later adobe will have to join the bandwagon, but it will be too late

Yep, me too. Export out and it always works.
It does not matter how fast your computer is, You should ALWAYS close Premiere when using any other big software. This is not only true for dynamic links.
That's the whole purpose of Dynamic Link - live updates in Premiere Pro.
The method I'm showing was the way it was done for decades so it's the exact same process as Dynamic Link with the headaches.
At 12:32 could someone tell me what he did to turn the clip color darker? Some shortcut to "hide" de clip?
I disabled the clip with a keyboard shortcut I set myself. Look for Enable in the Keyboard Shortcuts and set your own shortcut. I use Shift+E.
Thanks, great tips always
Thanks.
You know, when dynamic link doesnt work Media Encoder become useless as well, it cannot pick up files neither from AE nor from PP
No.
1. Exporting makes the files huge
2. You revise faster using the dynamic link
Yes and Yes. BUT, if Dynamic Link is busted, then you're toast.
I think you missed the very first thing I said which was, "If Dynamic Link is working for you, then that's fine. This tutorial is not for you!".
Glad it helped!
Actually there's an option in premiere pro
It's called "Render and Replace" which is the same thing and that will unlink the clip from after effects and then you can't change anything in after effects
But if you need to change anything you can undo that as well and change anything in after effects
How about that ?
Yes, that's useful but, it won't fix a Dynamic Link error. If you can't get the Comp to show in Premiere Pro, then you can't Render and Replace.
Helpful video! I have a question, when I try to send a clip from premiere pro that I’ve slowed down to after effects, the slowed down clip looks choppy in after effects. How can I fix this problem without exporting the clip too many times to where I loose quality? thank you!
After Effects speed changes are much better so just do all the changes in After Effects.
@@VideoRevealed okay thank you!
Do you have a tutorial on how to use the rotoscope brush in After Effects?
No I don't. I got all excited when it came out but I found it still has issues tracking the footage well. Real roto still needs to be done with paths using something like Mocha.
@@VideoRevealed Thanks.
Thank u man u are amazing man !!
To link directly to se and audition. Best think will always use fast and great
I'm still old school photoshop animations, not even after effects. Dynamic link went kaput :(
0:39 nope - I'm trying to render an After Effects composition in Adobe Media Encoder. It's driving me absolutely crazy. Sometimes it works - most times it doesn't, with the same project, same composition, same everything. Adobe are so frustrating
Try the Render Queue.
I was forced into dynamic link workflow this past week and wreaked havoc on my system and my anxiety I said the hell with it and went back to the old ways!
Yep, it works 100% when you go old school. 😆
@@VideoRevealed however, I’m hopeful one day it’ll get there. 🙏
I have a problem with this, the size changes after applying the changes in the after effect
size in priemier is difrent
same here, found a solution?
Thanks sir. It's very helpful 👍
You're welcome.
Thank u bro I wish it would just work smooth on the dynamic link 😭😭
Adobe should fix it, dynamic link has been there for years. I like to use the mogrt's in the Graphics panel. I like the look but I've just given up on using them embedded - and do as you do by creating a little standalone project just for them.
We can always hope it will be fixed.
Great advice as always! Many thanks for putting this together.
I'm glad you found it useful.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I can't even understand what you are talking about.
I guess it's difficult for me to comprehend..
I just want to know how to easily effectively get rid of dynamic link error that popped up when I attempt to import video for editing in Adobe Photoshop. Thanks
This tutorial is about Dynamic Link between After Effects and Premiere Pro. It has nothing to do with Photoshop.
The options replace with after effects composition is grey :(
Is there an option to let it work?
Make sure you're running the latest version of both programs.
@@VideoRevealed everything is up to date. That’s why it’s so strange
how about stop using premiere
Totally agree with you Colin! 😉
Thanks Serena.
Thx Colin!
Good to know.
is it possible to dynamic link in different versions?
No.
@@VideoRevealed ah ok, thanks anyway!
Just out of curiosity, How much RAM do you have installed on your Dell 7740?
64 GB RAM
I thought it was just me. Thanks for the tips
Happy to help
How to unlink AE-PR and keep footage as original?
Right-click and choose Restore Unrendered. If that's not available, it's because you moved something after handing off the clip to AE. If nothing else works, you just have to manually replace the clip.
Rendered - too many versions. Not good for too many changes. Storage consumption. Easy on PPro.
Dynamic link - Good when there are too many back and forth. Good CPU and GPU is needed. Light on storage. Good up with memory leaks often.
My Pr project in AE causes the video to flash before and after render
Any time a Dynamic Link project is causing problems, just render it out instead of using Dynamic Link.
yes but if you need to rotoscope this doesnt work
you said in one of your videos you had a video about choosing the right music. I cannot find it you have so many videos wow. could you please or anyone please send me a link to that video thanks.
I have a spreadsheet of all my episodes on my Members page. Just become a paid member and you'll have access to everything 24/7.
Here's the episode you're asking about:
th-cam.com/video/OkkOSrZ-RSA/w-d-xo.html
MY HERO!! What would I do without you bro?! I just kicked Dynamic link to the curb
Me too!
@@VideoRevealed and now AE has that new multi frame renderer.... I export 4:4:4 from the render queue and import to premiere, and my premiere render times for final video are only seconds! Like, duh! Why didn't I think about this before? Even though that's the way I used to do it in the old days lol I think when dynamic link was first introduced I was just so excited to make the damn thing work! But I'm through
Cant yiu just imoirt the ae project file on to the pp time line? Like you can with a ps on a ae timeline;)
That's Dynamic Link.
Can I render Quicktime + Alpha with Media Encoder?
Yes, but you can do this even without Media Encoder, right from AE's Render Queue.
@@angrypotato_fz I have always been doing it from Render Queue but don't know if it's possible from Media Encoder
Yes. This tutorial should help:
th-cam.com/video/KUtx1fltN4g/w-d-xo.html
Correct.
Yes it is.
Couldn't you just use a Proxy on Premiere for these?
At least if you needed to edit something on the scene back in After Effects it wouldn't be time consuming to replace it...
After Effects Comps can't be Proxies.
@@VideoRevealed Well, this sucks, I wonder if this comp would perform the same if the proxy (or precomp as a proxy) was actually on the AEP project...
@@NaitorStudios TECHNICALLY colin is right, if you use a linked comp it has to stay linked, BUT... you CAN use a proxy by rendering the video segment either as a preview or an actual lowrez video, on either case you'll have to make sure of some things:
1.) in case your final product video will be rendered with dynamically linked media:
a. make sure export options don't use proxies or previews
b. each comp clip in premiere is the actual linked instance and not a rendered copy (this makes sure there is minimal quality loss)
2.) in case you're using rendered media/proxy as final product
a. tick either "use proxies" or "use previews" at export
b. make sure you made these proxies at highest quality you're comfortable using, again for minimal loss
Straight to the point, really awesome and Profesional , thank you 😊
I try my best.
16 minutes to just say "don't use dynamic link just export your AE sequences".
Prores 4444 with alpha or Animation exports take too much space.
Thank you sir
You're welcome.
Thank you possible I will be using less that famous Dynamic Link yes I do have a powerfull computer and yes I do encounter those little shall I say lags between Premiere and After Effects and off course those lags are due to Dynamic Link. Thank for this helpfull video and for me it means no Dynamic Link sometimes. Unfortunatley I will have to use that Dynamic Link sometimes but very good help.
I'm glad you found it useful.
I am searching for how to disable and stop using dynamic link in after effects rendering and I come here - a 16 minute video. Are you kidding me! It should just be a sentence.
Lol, I'm just trying to use DL for the first time because I have a project that could use it, and it's BROKEN so far. So I guess all the YEARS of marketing from Adobe was always BS. It's back to the old school way for me.
Old school works.
Great video! And about TIME someone spoke up about this. I always just render out my AE projects, ALTHOUGH ... sometimes I'm using an OLD template (Digital Juice) and rendering takes FOREVER! But I have 2 machines, so I multitask. I also render the AE files to Animation, and there is no loss, although I DO love Cineform over Prores!
Thanks so much and I appreciate your comments.
Why?
Did you watch my tutorial? The answer is right there.
ok colin, i like your tutorials and tips, but this one is a mixed bag, dynamic link is not solely a way to connect the 2 programs, some people can't afford the HD space for those unnecessarily huge files, yes i know storage is cheap and affordable, but some people have to rely on limited space where every megabyte counts, as a youtuber you already know this business relies on multiple projects being worked on simultaneously, if you're not doing this for a living but as a hobby, starting and finishing one project at a time, then yeah sure... but on limited resources... dynamic link is a BIG game changer, i like how adobe tries to stick to their own route when it comes to handling editing suites, but i'm sorry.... apps like davinci resolve and hitfilm just said "screw this headache, lets combine them" and this puts up an actual competition to adobe, maybe not right now... but surely down the line... sooner or later adobe will have to join the bandwagon, but it will be too late
I think you missed the tutorial completely. It wasn't for anyone who is already working well with Dynamic Link. If you are, great. It's for everyone else who has problems as I clearly showed in this tutorial.
I don't "like" enough of your videos. You do great work and I've learned a lot on this journey through the dynamic link. Thank God it's over! 😆 🤣
Thanks and I get how you feel. 😀
this video saved me
LOL - I'm lucky I never even used Dynamic Link, I always export my work first and then do the edit second in my workflow
Then you'll never feel the pain. Good work!
noob here. Good shit to know before I even clicked dynamic link
Yep, use it if it works, but stay away if it doesn't.
U saved my life
So true. Dynamic link is almost always a mess. It is really great to bring back timecode and footage in AE, otherwise there is no meaning to me. Usually I just render Pro Ress 4444 with alpha channel or other high quality codec.
Cineware and AE is a bit the same story, old way wins 😅
Couldn't agree more!
Absolutely.
Chamare el señor tiene razón xd
Gracias por ver.
Or just buy a pc with 192gb ram like i did lol.
10069 views, nice 😏
What a complete waste of my time listening to you about what your problems, couldn't you just have told how to resolve the issue 15minutes earlier
Hi.. Adobe .. every year worse and worse!
Maybe Dynamic Link, but everything else is getting better.
rR
Ok.
both looked awful
Well, this never professed to be a design tutorial. 😂
