- Used this board in a recent repair/upgrade video, here's a closer look at it. It's got some weird shortcomings, such as a lack of rear USB ports and only a single M.2 slot, but it also has a lot of Legacy utility that gaming boards don't have. It will shine in niche scenarios, but past that, it's mainly of interest because it has no RGB or LEDs at all.

Bought this and an rx580 off a friend for dirt cheap and your review was a huge help. Using it mostly for older games and emulation. Maybe a F2P shooter and the like. Looks like this board is more then enough to get it done.
if i connect 3 monitors (1 to VGA Port,1 to DVI-D Port & 1 to DisplayPort), will i get different displays(extended display) on each monitor ? or will the DVI-D and VGA ports mirror the display ?

I am a beginner in PC building. I have this motherboard and I find myself short of USBs, I want to use the two USB intern ports but since they're inside, I don't get how their are useful at all. I mean, the cables would have to get out from the PC somehow, and although my tour has a door I can open, I don't want to risk it and let the dust sets it. Is there a way I can use those ports with my tour remaining closed ? Plus they look like they need some kind of adaptor to put on...Sorry if it's silly questions

Hi, can board take i5 9600k to its max turbo speed around 4.7 i guess.? Also i am not sure whether this board supports Intel turbo boost or whether motherboard has any role to play on first place. Appreciate your kind reply.

That PCIE 6 Pin Power connector next to the x16 slot is for an additional 75watts on top of the 75watts the slot provides, in case you are running 2 graphics cards like 2 RX 470's that don't have the supplemental power connector on the graphics card. So basically it provides 150 watts to the PCIE bus (for all slots).
im getting it since it's the only cheapest z390 i can find in my area.

Should do you just fine for that. Only problem these days is that I feel the single M.2 slot on this board is a bit limiting - but for most general work SATA SSDs are still perfectly fine, so not a show-stopper.

I was really confused when i noticed that i put my pcie x3 card in the pcie 1x slot on the top. But you said that the top slot is pcie x16, am i fine?
im guessing you mean your gpu is pcie gen 3 while x16 is bandwith. the slot with highest bandwith gives you the best performance so you should choose the 16x slot and it doesnt affect what pcie gen your gpu is

HDMI is not on the motherboard that will be through a GPU, it does have a display port though
Anyone have experience on the onboard audio on this thing? How is it? Would I need a sound card to compensate for any running noise?
If you're using a high end headset something like sennheiser then getting a better sound card to improve the audio quality but if you're just using it for gaming the onboard audio is fine.
Do you know where the power switch would connect to?
I bought an MSI Z390-A PRO from NewEgg 3 years ago! I was immediately disappointed with this motherboard because it has absolutely no Overclocking features! The only feature you have is you can tik the XMP to increase the voltage to the extra memory I purchased! Three years later something went bad in the board where I have to take the CMOS battery out and jump the JBAT terminals if I shut it down. Because it will just sit on the splash screen forever if I do not so now I just leave my computer on sleep mode!
I'm looking to upgrade either an MSI Z390 TomaHawk or an MSI MAG Z490 TomaHawk so I can still use my 4 DDR4 Ram in addition to upgrading the CPU as well! What are your thoughts?

HELLO ADAMENT! You are my go to guy for MSI! I recently built my last system with an MSI Z390-A Pro with an Intel Pentium Gold Coffee Lake G5400 Duel Core 3.7Ghz Processor! 64 GB DDR4 3200 Ram and a GeForce GTX 1650 Video Card! I use this system for Adobe Video Editing! Besides ticking the XMP & GAME BOOST button with FAN set to Auto, what else can I do to Overclock this system? I was told by MSI that This is basically a budget gaming board that cannot be manually overclocked? Any advise Would be greatly appreciated!

hmmmmmm I'd use a stronger board than this one with a 9900k. It's compatible, but the 9900k is a +200w CPU, even more if overclocked, and I wouldn't trust this mobo to supply that kind of power.

very good review, but i wanna know more about the cpu vrm part. u said about the VRM and the whole set up is ok for modest OC, but how much is the ceiling? can it run a i5-9600k on 4.7mhz(assuming the CPU can do it) stably?? how is it measured actually??
There's never guarantees with overclocking, so couldn't say what you can get. But I mean, with the 9600k at 4.6 boost, a reliable 4.7 all-core boost shouldn't be a problem so long as you've got better-than-stock cooling on it. Higher-end CPUs with more power draw plus overclock will bang onto load harder and that's when you're possibly going to crash - so more expensive boards have more sophisticated VRM systems that won't ripple when the CPU hammers them.

I have this card, i am not the nerdy kind, i just turn on the pc and start gaming or whatever and this motherboard has been a delight it can do what it meant to be doing

No on-board WiFi, although it has the slot to fit an on-board card.
This board has 3.0 headers, so your case's front USB 3.0 ports connect to there. There are Type A and Type C USB 3.1 on the rear IO. These are backwards compatible to 3.0, although the Type C connector would need an adaptor for that.

Unfortunately I can't change the case which is a macH power happy 31 I only have to mount an air sink with a height not exceeding 12cm. Can you recommend some good air coolers? I have someone like that

I can't figure out how to turn off the front panel USBs after shutdown! They keep my external HDDs powerd on all night unless I cut the power off power supply. The USBs are hooked to JUSB4, tried enabling ERP in BIOS, disabling Win10 Fast startup and making sure charging is off in MSI dragon center. Nothing worked!
H'mm... I'm not sure I'm afraid, ERP has always been the solution to this for me!

You need to buy an Intel WiFi card for it, which fits the lower Type-E M.2 slot. It's kinda designed for system integrators... I would just buy a regular PCI-E or USB WiFi card.

I have a question of comparison which may not really be related to this video, i am sorry if that seems rude to ask.
I am one of those people that knows bare minimum about gaming computers, only really understanding a little bit of CPU or GPU knowledge. So when the websites ask me to choose a motherboard i am clueless.
So when the PC building website present me with 3 options to:
1.) use MSI Z390-A Pro.
2.) upgrade to gigabyte z390 gaming sli for X amount of money
3.) upgrade to asus rog strix z390-e gaming, again for X+ amount of money
What actual differences will it be in performance or features between these 3? Even if i search the internet and look at the specs i am not really able to understand much about what those terms mean so i am still next to clueless

No, this is an Intel mobo - Ryzen requires a B550 or X570. (current gen chipsets. some older chipsets will also work but may need a BIOS update.
What is the max DDR4 3600 memory stick capacity you can put on this board?
64GB I'd imagine... but you're building a monster workstation that needs a crap ton of RAM, I'd use a higher-end board than this.

So is the audio quality bad with Realtek? Is it worth buying a sound card, I got a Hyper X Cloud 2 Pro headset and want to make sure I get the best sound quality.
The sound card on this mobo may limit your headphones slightly, but I'd wager you'll need a good ear to notice it. RealTek do make good audio chipsets as well, this mobo just has one of their cheaper ones.
There's two things that people will generally want from a sound card;
A) Good quality DAC / filtering. When the output is converted to digital, you want a high quality conversion (good sound chip), and you want decent filtering (output capacitors) to lower the noise floor. Keep in mind that most people don't have speakers/headphones anywhere near good enough to test the limits of a modest sound card anyway.
Also note that USB headsets will have their own DAC, so if you have a USB or wireless headset, that'll be the bottleneck.
B) Powerful enough to drive high impedance headphones. Keep in mind that 'Gamer' isn't the pinnacle of quality. The HyperX Cloud II is 60ohm impedance, where as studio grade headphones are generally 80, 150, or 250ohm. These high impedance drivers need a lot more horsepower from the amplifier, and a low-end on-board sound card won't bring the best out of top-end headphones/speakers. High-end onboard sound can get into the upper impedance ranges, otherwise you need to look for PCI-E sound cards.
On top of that, some PCI-E sound cards are just an improved DAC, some also have a bigger power amp for high impedance gear.

Hi! Got a question about the board. Its got a 6 pin power port bottom left of the cpu slot, its labeled: "PCIE_PWR1" which i assume to be power for the pcie connectors. However, is this needed? i noticed in your build you didn't use it and also in others when the motherboard manual says its necessary. Not sure what to do :/ thanks in advance!
Yea it's extra power for PCI-E, but it's pretty redundant as any cards that need the power typically have their own power connectors on them anyway. I'm not sure why MSI bothered with it here - can't think of any likely configurations that would need it.

If you have spare internal USB headers, you can use expansion plates like this to route them to the back. USB2 and USB3 ones are available. i have touched something which made 2 of the ram slots near the cpu not working, i get warning each boot telling me to put rams on optimized slots but i can not, how do i turn the warning off please thanks..

Do you need a USB to install windows or it is windows 10 ready ?
Windows is stored on your main HDD or SSD, not the mobo. So if you have blank drives, you will need a win 10 flash drive to set them up.

To get the most out of that 9600k you need a Z390 board. B360M will work, but Intel K-series CPUs pick up a lot of speed by overclocking - and you need a z-chipset for that.

I mean, they'd work together, yea.
Mobo/GPU combos don't really matter though. It's more about a good pairing between your Mobo and CPU, and then your CPU and GPU.

I have ordered msi z390 a pro motherboard and i9 9900 CPU will this perform good or bottleneck please guide me. Somebody told me that you should go with tomahawk msi z390 a pro is low end and will burn off as it can't handle powerful cpu.
Yea I personally wouldn't use an i9 in this motherboard. It'll be compatible, but you're likely to have power delivery issues. The i9 will happily pull 200+ watts at full-tilt.
I'd be looking at something more like the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro, or an equivalent mobo with big VRMs on it.

Yup, so long as your PSU has an 8-pin PCI-E connector. Really cheap nasty PSUs don't have one, but any good brand PSU will have you covered.

If you have these kinds of motherboard with 4 slots to put the RAM sticks in and say you have purchased only 2 sticks of RAM, then you have to put them on slots (1 and 3) or (2 and 4), by leaving gaps and by not putting into the adjacent slots, these slot numbers are usually marked on the motherboard. You cannot put them in slots (1 and 2) or (3 and 4) or (1 and 4) to achieve the dual channel function. This enables the RAM to be in optimal performance. If you have only one RAM stick or four RAM sticks then you can put them in any slot in any order.

Couldn't say I'm afraid, I've not spent any time with a D14, so not sure how much clearance is an issue with it.

You don't have to use the addition 4pin CPU on high-end boards, you can run with just 8pin.
The extra 4 is for extreme overclocking.

You can run the software, yes. But the mobo has no RGB headers on it. If you're going for an RGB set up, this is not the board for you. This is an anti-RGB board.

Did you try? I think it you just increase the multiplier from 37 to a higher number it would be ok. But there's also Ring etc. I came to this video looking for detailed BIOS settings for MSI and i core 9th gen 9x00
