You are right Aria. Not typical at all. Almost like a spoof on fairy tales. It's fun to see you laughing at all the good natured, light hearted humor in this film. Shrek and Donkey are two of the greatest animated characters of all time.
As much as this movie is memed on and goofed about, it’s actually really great. Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers are a great pairing and Cameron Diaz is a surprisingly great voice actor. The second one is also good, but that’s as far as I’d watch.
Lord Farquaad (voiced by the incomparable actor, John Lithgow) was a not so subtle jab at Michael Eisner, then CEO of The Walt Disney Company. Jeffrey Katzenberg, one of the founders of DreamWorks, used to work at Disney and he and Eisner had had a long running feud.
At the end of the film, we see a reference to the Beatles, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder, on a piece of the Monkees covered occasionally by Smash Mouth 😉
My wife made me go to Shrek the play a few years ago. I knew nothing about Shrek, but I really enjoyed the play. Since then I have seen the movie a few times and enjoyed that too. I usually do not watch reactions to Shrek, but somehow I knew yours would be worthwhile. I was right.
