    The '98 - '02 layout really suited IndyCar/CART cars. Greg Moore did a lap flatout in that config, to get pole. I can only imagine the knife edge he was on to do that.

    Thank god this track got redesigned. People complained about Milwaukee but this track would've redefined 'no passing' if it still existed today.

      I was just thinking the same thing. It's cool looking, but it would definitely be 400 miles of single file, follow the leader...

    Along with Ontario, Indy and this, there was another track like this: Luanda. Which isn't in the US but... Angola. It also has a extremely interesting story. It was build as colonial upmanship, with Estoril being build in Portugal, the Angolan Colonial Government wanted to essentially beat Estoril before it even opened, so hired the same designer who made Estoril, he designed Luanda and the track opened a few months before Estoril. It was quite a advanced track for the time. The oval was really flat honestly, and it also had a dogleg like thing at the back straight, and it did have a road course build in from the start with two configurations. What's also interesting is that all corners were constant radius, it looks like the track was just hastily designed with only a compass, a ruler and a pen.
    The track would host racing during the Portuguese colonial times, but would fall into disuse when Angola had a massive civil war. But, the track has reopened to local racing a few years ago, although only one layout is available and it's in quite a bad shape, but still, at least it's still open

  • @andrewhayes88
    @andrewhayes88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This configuration was actually modified slightly before being rebuilt into the flat traditional oval. With those darker asphalt patches in each corner, the turns was made wider after 1995 because the corners were still too sharp.

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ah very interesting, thanks for sharing! I was wondering why parts of the circuit had fresh pavement right after it had opened, makes sense!

      @fishflake1209 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@GPLaps The 1997 Homestead CART race is among the many vintage race broadcasts available on the official Indycar channel. The commentators mention at the start how the turn apexes have been moved in by 25 feet compared to the 1996 race.
      That might have provided a wider racing line, but it also made impact angles with the wall in the event of a crash more severe (which is why the apron was removed at Indianapolis after 1992). It’s no surprise the track was reconfigured after that.

    I think they re-profiled the 4 corners between the 96 and 97 CART races. That is to say, changed the radius while still having short-chutes and 4 individual turns.

    "only 2 tracks that come to my mind" there was an oval track that the CART series raced on in Rio De Jenero that had a similar layout as well and it even made it into a game that released on the Sega Dreamcast that was based on the 1998 CART season, but I forget the name of that game.

    Great Video! Thanks a lot! I used to remember Homestead in it's 'Indy' Layout just because of CART Precision Racing _ man, I used to binge that game. Sadly, but luckily (!), they redid it due to the safety regulations. But it never was that 'original' Speedway again. Great to see again! @@davidzanelli6847 with the default limits of 128 tracks and 16 mods, you could theoretically play a new car and track combination everyday for 5.6 years before having to delete and replace. Contrary to what some have said, I don't think this variant of Homestead was bad for the racing. It was certainly something different for a track this size.
    It's a little hard to say how this one would go with the current Indy Cars. They ran here as late as 2010, and even moved it to the season finale, but the crowds didn't come. Now, I think part of that may have been the cars, which are definitely better now, but I don't know if they'd get a big enough audience to warrant having another go.
    Also, I can't deny that I, like many others, have a bad taste in my mouth for the 1.5-milers in IndyCar, due in large part to what happened at Las Vegas in 2011.
    I can't really see it actually happening, but one wild oval that I think could accommodate Indy Cars was featured in a recent article. It's basically a giant paperclip with turns of radii and banking similar to Indy: Rafaela in Argentina:

    Cool mod, sounds could really be improved though, doesn't sound like a v6 at all. Think that the slower lap times compared to CART are due to the fact they ran a setup with much more downforce, something closer to the short oval kit nowadays. Probably had much higher corner speeds.

    Thankfully NASCAR Racing 2003 is a highly moddable sim with fantastic AI. Otherwise, there would be no real options for Indycar fans to race on ovals these days. Project Cars 3 is a joke and Project Cars 2 only had two Indycar ovals. iRacing doesn't have AI for any Indycar's available yet. And there hasn't been any news on the Indycar game developed by the NASCAR Heat team since they said they had an Indycar game planned.
