  • In this episode Matt, Jason, and "Grandpa Joe" go on an adventure to dig out a rare 1936 Chrysler C8 Airstream Convertible Sedan. This car has the more rare Straight 8 engine, a two piece folding convertible top, removable b-pillars, factory overdrive, independent front suspension and many more features that made it ahead of its time. This car was found in an old garage sitting behind a modern gas station and just off a main road in Harrisburg, PA. The transmission went bad in the car and it was tucked in a corner and never touched again. We dug the car out of the garage and brought it out to see the light for the first time since 1951-1952. This car is extremely solid and is a great candidate for a full restoration!

I have literally driven down that part of 230 thousands of times, and never once thought to myself that something that interesting could be back there. I always end up traveling for my automotive treasures.. Nicely done.

In 1951 my dad bought a 1934 Desoto Airflow. It was Dark Blue, 4 door with split window fore and aft! It had Free Wheeling (overdrive) It would go 85 mph with the 6 cylinder motor. He bought it for $85 from a junk yard, it had no rust or serious damage. The gas gauge did not work. I was 11 at the time. I never drove it but I was allowed to drive the 34 Plymouth, I hauled firewood in the rumble seat. No cops speed limits of 45 mph. The roads were not fit for more. I hope this car goes to a home for complete restoration. She deserves it!

I'm drooling over that sleeping beauty! I love streamlined cars from the '30's-'40's - Desoto Airflows, Lincoln Zephyrs, Chevrolet Fleetliner's (and all other period GM 2-door fastbacks), Studebakers bullet nosed models, and Nash Airflight ('49-'51). I'd love to have a collection of them all.

My father had a '36 DeSoto like this for about 2 years. Most likely a 6 cyl. He made his own valves for it from Ranger engine Thompson valves and ran it on the "unusable fuel" 100 octane avgas from the test cells tanks. In the lead-up to Pearl Harbor they were working long hours so he'd sleep hard and then have to speed hard down Hempstead Turnpike. He'd always leave the Nassau PD Fords in his dust at more than their top 88 mph, but this was tough on the cloth top and he kept his mother's needle working.

That car has absolutely beautiful lines and style. For Gods sake don't hot rod it. Make it look like it did when it was on the road. I'm not even sure I'd paint it, just clean and try rubbing some linseed oil into the paint. The top and interior fabric of course will have to be new made, but keep in its its original style. I saw a guy buy up some old leather couches just for the old looking leather and use it on his seats and it looked great.

They were looking at the back wheel thinking the axle was seized when actually the car was in gear. Just before they were focusing on the back wheel, one rear wheel was on the ground and the other wheel was actually turning. Hopefully they didn't damage the transmission.

I am restoring a 1913 Maxwell found in completely original but totally un assembled condition -it was an estate sale-loaded with various crap loading the truck and trailer their was a coffee can of rusty nuts bolts and washers tucked in a box of broken wood and scraps of leather and left them their, later finding out that they were the left hand thread nuts and bolts in a hard to find pitch for the drive line. give everything to the person restoring the car let them decide what is junk

Looks like I had it was and I can wash it about five times before cleaning it again with goop. I have over ten miles of dirt/ clay road to drive just to get to the hw. Also there is a junk yard here in St Johns that is filled with a lot of the older cars. I am talking model A's and up in years.

If this car were a hopeless, hapless, helpless rusted out wreck, even then, I say sell them to somebody else looking to restore another one of these, not to an ancientmobile abominator. But this specimen is worth restoring, if not as a frame-off full resto, then at least as a frame-on driver!

What an amazing pull... sure looked solid. You know....that the guy that buy's it could and may just rather have some new repop taillights....And with your natural tendency to build period hot rods... I've checked with the front office and they've decided they should stay with you! Great job fellas.

Watching old cars get loaded onto trailers is somehow tranquilizing. Like watching fish go round and round in a fish bowl. Only why keep fish in a bowl?

Pulled a 1939 Buick special four door sedan with a straight 8 out from between some trees where it had been sitting for almost 20 years also due to trans issues. Mines in pretty damn good condition all things considered. Was restored in the 80's. Really not much wrong with her asides from the trans. Body wise she's pretty good too. Got some surface rust in the floors and trunk and a dent in the fender. Interiors perfect still.

Roll up windows = Convertible Sedan. Side curtains = Phaeton

You are correct. Ford, with the Model T, and other manufacturers also referred to their open 4-seaters as touring cars. In addition, roadster and convertible are terms frequently used to describe the same type of car, however a true roadster also has no roll up windows.

Both of your skid steer's front tires are mounted on the wrong side of the Bobcat. Also, the left front tire is under inflated.
