Saving The 1939 Mercury Coupe From The Rust Lagoon

  • A few months back we extracted a three cars from a local junkyards private stash, and in that video Matt mentioned he purchased 5 vehicles. After lots and lots of rain, the ground is hopefully firm enough to rip the 1939 Mercury from its current home in the swamp. They tried to remove it earlier in the summer and the large front end loader sunk into the mud and almost couldn't get out! Let us know what you think Matt should do with the 1939 Merc. Turn it into another traditional hot rod, tail dragging custom, or selling it and focus on other projects.

    This was amazing to watch seeing that old car move for the first time in 60 years. It was also spooky to see the steering wheel turning as the car was dragged out of the weeds. Almost like some ghost was driving.

    Forget the Forgotten Tudor, the Merc Coupe is WAAAAAY COOLER !!!!!!!!! You haven't built a custom yet so thats my suggestion. Every panel that is damaged is replaceable or repairable , so ,as we say DOWN UNDER pull your finger out and start building!!!! Great purchase Matt.

    Needed a manual steering box for my 72 GTO, found one in a 70 LeMans, yard like this, full of 30's 50's 60's+ cars.
    Guy hooks up his F350 4x4 wrecker to it, FLOORS IT..!
    We are going in and out of 1-2 foot deep dips full of water, turning whipping around corners, the frame "Vs" and buckles in the roof.
    The more parts coming off this 70 LeMans the faster the guy is going. The biggest set of "dips" are at one of the bypasses to other newer areas of the yard toward the front, he starts making some speed and frame digs in and pole-vaults the "under" on top and rips the car in 2 right at the A pillars just as we go 2+ feet into this water hole at 40ish, I looked in those huge Ford mirrors to see this LeMans swinging and bouncing like the deep sea monster that ate that guy in Deep Star SIX, "At Least We Got The End With The Parts You Need", guy yells, all I could say was "yea".
    He wanted $40 for the box, I gave him $60, he said that's $20 too much, I said "I would have given you $60 just for that ride!".

    If nothing else, it has a lot of glass and chrome trim. Looks like the instrument panel is good. Not being there, it's hard to tell what the lower body looks like. Thin rust being held together by more thin rust? The hood, maybe the trunk lit, and the upper body are salvageable for other projects. If there is an engine, there are parts. I think you'll do OK by parting it out. Congratulations on a grear find.

    I hate it when they move vehicles by forklift. They always do more damage. A 64 Comet I bought from a junkyard was moved by forklift, they damaged the gas tank, bumpers, quarter panels and left front fender. A 55 Buick from a different junkyard had the bumpers damaged by forklift and a 65 Ford pickup had the driveshaft ruined. By contrast I bought a 56 Ford coupe from a little old lady. It had sat in a field for 30 years sunk down to the frame. Took 3 hours to dig it out but I got it out myself without damaging anything.

    I don't know how youll save this one, it looks to be way too far gone. Id part it out, the hood, windshield and frame, grille, and a few bits of stainless trim are decent-the rest, ugh.

      Anything can be fixed anyway it's got a good flat head the frame was not rusted in half , that car in water half of its life despite that it's still mostly all there a good fitter fabricator could build all the pieces

    Should have dug around it and put supports underneath and carefully lifted it out by crane, would've been a little more work, but could save the car from damage.

    • @danielwilson6401
      @danielwilson6401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't disagree more. With the proper treatment, I think this car will look better than a Ford. The roof lines are just different enough to make it stand out. Seen from the rear quarter, 95% will never have a clue as to what it is. perfect basis for clean custom....or would that be Kleen Kustom? In any case, just think about the 50-60 years of welding experience Matt can put on his resume after this one...lol
