Whilst I was listening to this beautifully sung version of this medieval carol, I had tears running down my face thinking of all those children murdered in wars over the centuries, but in particular the children of Aleppo in Syria, killed in cold blood as Herod did over 2000 years ago! Have a blessed Christmas sisters and brothers.
The greatest holocaust of the most innocent, the war on life itself needs no guns or barrel bombs. It is waged day in and day out across the globe when a selfish person proclaims a life "inconvenient", "unplanned", "an accident" etc.
Why? It was invented in Coventry and is meant to be sung in English. This is just silly. It's like singing a song about India, written in India that has India in the name but doing it in Chinese.

All day I've been thinking about and playing this saddest carol of all, the Coventry Carol, and thinking of the Middle East, but especially Aleppo. And Lo! I found this version, sung -- and sung beautifully, and in Aramaic, no less -- by a Syrian church in LA. Thank you so much
Probably the best arrangement and harmonies I have ever heard on this sad, haunting English "carol". It commemorates a terrible event when king Herod slaughtered all male children 2 years and under, in his attempt to destroy the Christ child. There is nothing happy or "Christmas" about it!
It is more poignant when you realize how this ethnic group has suffered in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere yet hold fast to their faith in Christ. Now that is what is beautiful -- their faith. Open your heart, please. And the story of Herod's slaughter of the innocents speaks to the depths human depravity will go to rebel against God
