  • This video explains how game theory on one layer of our economic system can come in and shift the moral frame on a different layer of the system. In this story this happens through money, though other sources of power can accomplish the same feat.

As someone who teaches at a small college, this is eerily correct of what happens at faculty meetings and being driven by student enrollments.
If I were to show this video to my colleagues I think they would all uncomfortably recognize it, and would change nothing.

I am so happy to get this video in my feed. You are brilliant; I love how you taught something that could be difficult to understand with a story that made it very easy to understand. This is an area where I have no education and experience, so I am very grateful to come across your channel. Immediately subscribed and liked. Thank you for being a gifted educator and sharing your knowledge with us! ⭐️

Another great video. It's these sorts of dilemmas that make me think that we need a meta-level narrative or understanding or project for us as a species. Not that this is an easy thing to figure out, but if the structures of society are built around making sure that people get what they need (ie status, shelter, food, salient paths for growth) then we can be more careful about where we let competitive dynamics play out. Everything just being a grab bag of whoever can find the leverage so long as it isn't explicitly illegal or won't be found out is extremely toxic, and I think we could have a much better understanding of how society does and what it should do if we tried.

One of the thoughts around these kinds of dilemmas is that there is always going to be several, seemingly contradictory, competing moral imperatives in play, and the ordering of moral imperatives to what is most important to a person is going to vastly change how things are approached (in Ashley's example group cohesion vs. free speech).
I think there is an argument to be made the metagame is something along the lines as to which moral imperative is most in play at the moment (indeed, the arguments and direction will reference conditions on the ground) without exactly being hypocritical, but the test in my mind is always "what if roles were reversed" (or pull from the veil of ignorance) to get a true ordering and avoid manipulation.

Ashley, thank you for your exposition. It reminds one of the process of developing another type of moral frame: an operating budget. The budget process is a moral one, a budget is a moral document. Your lesson illuminates the reasons for why this is so. Good work here.

Great video! Your other channel has a lot of game theory tutorials but doesn't appear to explain it from the absolute basics, rendering much of the content incomprehensible. It would be great if you could either do a short basics course on that at some point, or if the videos are there, to group them into a starter playlist.

She's basically providing a Marxist analysis of society. How economic conditions shape the moral framework of a society. For instance, the capitalist economic system is the driving force behind the formation of our political systems like liberal democracies we all have come to love and cherish so much.

Oof It was really hard not to map this on to specific real world groups.
Power consolidates, always. I'm particularly interested in a game players ability to quit a system/game. In this scenario even with deep moral conviction if I'm dependent upon the systems there's not much I can do. In a different scenario with a different cost of living a handful of people can protest. Equity and inequality matter. The ability to quit. If you're not careful "market forces" can keep you/everyone poor and silent.

From the viewpoint of someone in England in their 60s - I don't recognise any of this. There is a tacit assumption in the vid that group motivations are significant vs. all the other aspects of life. For instance, "community". Yes, there are groups you could draw a line around and tell them they are a community... but, there would be no real feeling, need, or bond over and above 101 other domestic pressures. I cannot recall a non-religious group which would self-label as a community, beyond the immediate need of a situation. And those religious groups are rare in the UK.
For instance, the people in my street. We are technically a community due to location, but we have nothing in common and I only know a few names.
I suspect the difference is due to "cultural kneading" (like kneading dough). That's been going on for thousands of years here, intermingling groups. People are scattered. Plus, there are no non-exhausted economic resources (all mined out 15 generations ago) so no incentive to gather at a point to do XYZ.
Perhaps the US is different? OR I'm in another position to view a situation...

I seen a guy saying theres 2 parallel classs systems . Theres the elete and the counter elite. Like gates vrs musk basically.
Below the elite you have the pmc and academics. Below the counter elite you have businesses owners . The guy who owns like 20 plumber vans .
Below academics and pmc you have the middle class trying to enter the pmc though education and the trades small business owners trying to climb up to be business owners and eventually counter elite.
The 2 sides hate each other and think the other one is pointless and has its own complete opposite culture. Im definitely counter elete sided . Carpenter to house flipper hopefully to property mogal counter elete one day .
F the pmc and intellectual, there woke mind vires everything they do is pointless or harmful 😂

Be careful trusting Elon. People still get canceled on Twitter, it's just that the things they get canceled for have changed now that there's a new owner.
Counter-elite is really only new elites jockeying for position with the existing ones.
Those robots and self-driving vehicles he's building have the potential to eliminate all sorts of jobs and small businesses.
