  • We watch news coverage of terrorism because we think it'll make us better informed about how to keep ourselves safe. But what if it does the opposite?

    For most Americans, terrorism is only ever experienced through a television screen or front page of a newspaper. Many Americans rely on cable news in the wake of high-profile tragedies, and news networks see ratings spikes in the wake of terrorist attacks. Those ratings incentivize news networks to sensationalize their coverage, repeatedly airing graphic images of violence and combing over the excruciating details of attacks. That kind of news coverage causes Americans to overestimate the danger posed by terrorism, and our heightened fear can have serious consequences, causing us to overreact, pursue unhelpful security measures, and rally behind politicians who embrace over-the-top responses to terrorism.

      Gert Verhulst - it's all to sell us things. That's why American football/gridiron is our national sport (lots of breaks for commercials) and the news is so sensationalized (longer viewership).
      My husband and I stopped paying for TV 6 years ago and haven't looked back since. Independent media without commercials (like YT Red) make our lives fairly advertising free.

      Exactly. Terrorists probably feel at least slightly triumphant if their attack makes news; acts of terrorism are meant to scare the targeted people into acting politically in their favor. The best option I can think of for fighting terrorism is to stop letting terrorism scare you. They're like bullies, except far more dangerous.

      You perceive it as a threat, because it erodes your confidence in your already held viewpoints.
      Because its messages is bright and clear: Be aware of your own biases induced through skewed perception of things.

      byrne1et well actually, I live in Pakistan. you're not entirely wrong, terrorism is much worse on this side of the world (although in Pakistan at least the situation has become a lot better in recent years, comparatively), but even my relatives from abroad would call us before we even found out about an attack/bomb/tragedy here because it's so amplified on the news, that it really does look like the world is crumbling. So even though you are partially correct, so is the video. the situation always looks much worse when it's being broadcasted so much.

    • @kellypark2344
      @kellypark2344 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The video isn't saying that you should stop worrying about terrorism and terrible things in general. When you overreact, this can slowly change how you think about things in general, and you overlook the better ways or more strategic ways to solve it. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't worry about it, It's mostly since the people want to know more about the world (from the "obvious" choice, the news) so the free new channels can give you that.
      People will also think it is more interesting to watch action filled things (not all of course) than watch a segment over... the recent updates on school lunch food.
      But......... I'm just telling you that some people should research the whole story. :-)

I went through journalism school right after 9/11 (not a coincidence) and it took me 10 years to figure out I was trained as a soldier in an army of journalists that reinforce the status quo. Yeah I kinda feel bad that Americans don't have like a news network like euronews that just shows local newaround Europe in your language and then most terror attacks around the world are give the same priority as the moments are held in the no comment section every 15 min and it just no present or voice raw video clips of the event with subtitles telling the story like they let you take you own opinions of what's happening and it almost more more scary but it seems less attacking and fear mongering then cable networks. But it probably helps that I'm Irish and Loyalist and ira terrorism is almost more likely not see Islamic terrorism as much of a threat

    I completely agree that such reporting on terrorism just stokes fears of people, which often decreases their personal happiness and feelings of safety. Yet this is not only true for terrorism, but many other topics as well. Pretty much all topics that cause a strong emotional reaction, one that can not be easily reasoned away. Other examples are the rise in Hate Crimes or stories about Trump Russia connections. Stoking fear brings clicks, brings views.
    If you now feel like you have to disagree, ask yourself why. Terrorism is a hate crime, the most malicious form of a hate crime. Other hate crimes are statistically just as unlikely to affect you, so why would the reason be different for those? Yet they often get heavily reported on as well.
    Fear is one of the easiest emotions you have to manipulate people. It's hard to make them "love" you, but it's easy to make them fear something. News and politics loves to use these innate human behaviors. Fear based narratives are the strongest ones usually. The right side in America is currently loving to use fear of foreigners - be it due to economical pressure or terrorism. The left side is using fear of Trump and a re-emerging of so-declared fascist ideas and policies. Black Lives Matter is to a great deal based on fear of police, of them being racist and abusing power. White Identity politics are based upon a fear of being displaced, of losing their own culture and identity.
    Fear is far too often what makes people political - and the policies and decisions they make due to fear are illogical. It's not just an terrorism.

    • @skylermikalson6159
      @skylermikalson6159 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, statistically, hate crimes are thousands of times more common in America than Islamic terrorism is.

    • @MilkaCowie
      @MilkaCowie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hate crimes are definitely more common than terrorism, already per definition. Terrorism is always a hate crime AFAIK, but not every hate crime is terrorism. Just doing a very basic look at the latest official numbers (I know Wikipedia is a bad source) there are 18 deaths from terrorism in the US in 2014 and 5,479 hate crimes. At a population of 300+ million, both are statistically insignificant and it's incredibly unlikely to ever impact your life. Yet for both of these topics the perceived threat is far bigger than the actual one due to the excessive reporting and media coverage.

    I remember a terror attack happening for the very first time in my country. The people who lived nearby the site were posting in Facebook about how there were gunshots and screams of 'Allahuakbar' and they were terrified, so me and my cousins knew before it reached the media. We turned on the TV, and we were terrified about how many people were killed including police officers.We were supposed to go out, and the site of the attack was one of our destinations. My cousin's friend luckily survived even though he was in the site. The more terrifying fact was that the terrorists were people our relatives knew; like my cousin's cousin's best friend and my brother's classmate back at middle school, but luckily I didn't know anyone and these incidents ceased to take place. Note that these terrorists were from their late teens to early teens. Holy crap.

      @boofdaclown7866 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Those cable networks cost taxpayers millions (maybe billions) of dollars annually, it seems like a waste of money when you can just add regulations to it. Look at England, they have 1 channel run by the government and taxpayer money (BBC) that I am almost certain has no infomercials and the rest is commercial bs on other channels. It is such a waste of money and resources to do that over the whole entire cable network. What if the government is corrupt and wants to brainwash the people? Look at what they own that everyone watches, it would be so easy. North Korea is a perfect example of this. At least with a free market its harder to do that (even though it is happening anyway)
      we need to add regulations, that is it.

    Regarding the pole: Who exactly did they pole for those numbers? I HATE seeing unsolicited stats/poll numbers because I have no idea the demographics or sample size. Based on that placement and numbers, I could almost argue that most people surveyed didn't have "loved ones" since over 60% didn't list "loved ones dying" or "loved ones seriously ill" as being a fear. Therefore they don't care about others or don't have people in their lives to care about.
    Point is; polls are stupid and nearly worthless without any background about them.

    To be fair, this has been known for a long time. Wasn't obsession with fear in TV news media the topic of that Fahrenheit movie?

    But i feel the opposite tbh. I feel completely unaffected by violence in the world now,it doesnt surprise me nor scare me.

    That terrorist attack in Sweden last year really got to me. It happened only a few kilometers from where I was. It was scary because of how close it was to me.

      Except it totally misses the point that most terrorist attacks you see on the mainstream media are false flags or completely hoaxed psyops.

      Amanda Bertelsen Yup, there is a terror attack somewhere everyday.

      >>Since when is it a bad or immoral thing to not want terror attacks or something you could clown somebody about
      it is not. what's bad is pouring resources in ineffective measures against terrorism, while ignoring more important threats and problems. and that is only possible because people are unjustifiably scared of terrorism (which is exactly the purpose of terrorism, actually, so nice of people doing exactly what terrorists want).

    I think people are aware of how unlikely you are going to be killed by a terror attack but are more worried about what the future holds when people are willing to do it, and the number of potentials only seems to grow.
