Coming from a big Italian family, this was us every Sunday. When I was a kid, I wasn't allowed to help cook. All I was allowed to do is take the bread in and out of the oven. When I got older, my grandmother taught me how to make her sauce and I took over that. I'm 49 now and most of my family is dead and gone, but me, my mother, one aunt, and my cousins still get together when we can and have a nice dinner.
This movie holds such a special place in my heart. I watched it at least once if not twice a day sometimes for about 30 days straight after my dad passed. Just something comforting about it. Fantastic movie
Hold up. Something I wasn't paying attention to before. They're all dressed down, but Henry is not? And he's walking in with a sack of deli meats, cheese and wine? Does that imply that Henry can just...walk out? He was sent food shopping? I figured the sack was contraband from some postal room. And he merely went elsewhere in the prison. But the bread is "fresh". And wherever he went, he clearly got to browse types of food. Is the skinny guard being a pain in the ass because Henry is just freely moving in and out of the walls?
Henry is the one going out into the yard and mess, that's why he's dressed while everyone is in their robes. The rest are made guys, he is just an associate
Probably from the other officers that are bribed, that's who is bringing in the Lobster. The skinny officer is like the kid in Das Boot. I imagine he picks it up like mail but in reality other officers have filled his bag that morning.
Fun fact: Vinnie is played by Martin Scorsese's dad and Joe Pesci's mom is Scorsese's Mom. He used his parents in the movie. Family man respects his parents
One thing i always LOVED about this scene Vinny tried justifying putting 3 onions in by calling them small and calling the cans of tomatoes 2 big cans 😂

Ray Liotta was so good to watch in this movie. His body language...and that famous laugh of his. His delivery was amazing. "If you touch her again, YOU'RE DEAD!"
Phil did the prep work. He was doing 20 years for racketeering at a midget car race track. He had this wonderful system for doing the cheese. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that it used to liquefy on the radiator with just a little bread. It was a very good system.
If there is one scene in the entire movie that everybody recognizes it's this one. Every time I talk to anyone about Italian cuisine this scene comes up. Always, without a fail.

This scene and the music choice is perfection. Really feels like a nice family gathering on Christmas Day, dad is cooking up the Christmas dinner, we are all having a good time, laughing and getting along.

To be fair, his dad was perfect for that role. Old guineas speak like that all the time where everyone's named the same (patrilineal traditions and all) and it takes them a bit (sometimes a bit more when they're older) to fill in the names. The little idiosyncracies that might seem like mistakes or odd in Scorsese's work are the details that give the authentic glimpse of what Italian-American culture is about

I don't know it might be that in the old days like especially if Mobsters were very prevalent in a certain area of town certain crimes basically dropped to zero to the point where they almost became model cities good example in the original book version of The godfather by Mario puzo supposedly after Mr Corleone and his family moved to Long Beach in Long Island New York the crime level basically dropped off for the most part in their area bad kids were often advised to run away from home and the flim-flam men and people like that were given only one warning after that they tend to disappear eventually yes Vito and his family's hometown in Long Island wound up becoming pretty much crime Free.

For me this movie was epic because I read the book a few years before the movie came out. Just to see the characters played on the big screen was awesome. I hold this film dear to my heart LOL
My girlfriend just picked up on me playing Bobby Darrin "Beyond The Sea" when I'm making Italian food. I tell her the meatball has to have the Pork, that's the flavor. She never saw Goodfellas all the way through. LOL.
