And neither man is laughing because he's actually amused. Walken is laughing in disbelief and to hide how pissed off he's getting, and Hopper is laughing to play along and cover up his own fear. The laughter is like a mask that both men are holding up to cover the raw emotions that are coming up in this exchange.
I vaguely recall the "eggplant" and "cantaloupe" line were ad-libbed...might be mis-remembering, but it was something about Hopper coming out with that out of nowhere, and Walken lost it and responded with an ad-lib too.
I love the psychology of this scene (the full scene) He knows he's gonna die, so he decides to have that final smoke and then proceeds to insult the main guy in order to be killed quickly without more violence. Nobody wants to see it coming. He was killed with respect.

Movies in the 70s, 80s and 90s were the best. There were so many movies that I can still watch to this day over and over for the rest of my life because the story and the acting was so great. Today though... today's movies suck, every once in a while I will see a decent movie that I might watch 1 more time but Its rare they come out with anything comparable to the quality and originality of movies back then. They were captivating back then and kept you on the edge of your seat now its just some CGI comic book movie or some dumb jump scare crap.

Of course he was pissed and felt disrespected but even he could appreciate the balls of steel this guy had to insult him like that before certain death instead of the usual begging for life

I'd go one further on that theory. Not only did Walken's character respect Hopper by giving him a quick death, he also did it himself. He even remarked that he hadn't killed anyone in a long time. Some will say he did it himself out of rage for being insulted, but I say that he felt bound by honor to finish it himself rather than delegate it to one of his soldiers.
But given the caliber of these actors, Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper could have been reading recipes to each other and it would have still been riveting.
Incredible scene. Hopper is magnificent in this, as he was in Apocalypse Now of course, but the part where you see the resignation on his face is perfect, but so sad and scary as well. He figured out how not to give his son up and knew it’s a deadly move.

They were white southern Europeans. Another thing, modern day Sicilians are about 95% European blood, with most of that 5% being maghrebi. So yeah, the med appearance of southern Italians is mostly native rather than foreign as is often claimed by some.

What awesome acting! Hopper went from scared security guard to a fuck you Detroit officer he used to be in seconds. Accepting his fate and taking the last and only available attack before going out which was completely annihilate Walkens entire race to his face! Walkens quote "Tell the angels you've never seen evil so personified as you did in the face of the man that killed you" didn't mean shit! I hope when i go out i can be that bad ass!
It's true. Walken wasn't aware of "eggplant" as a racist insult against blacks. His cataloupe line was his attempt at a comeback to keep the dialogue going. And the laughing from everyone immediately after was real.

Hense the tone changes when he asks for his last cigarette after declining it initially. He then uses that last few minutes not only enjoy his last smoke but to also insult his executioner!!! What he said isn't entirely true!!!!! I'm sure I read years ago that both actors did improvise with the scene a little. The word you mentioned is used cause he knows it's insulting to Walkens character, as hes racist . It's also very ironic, the last insult he called him was "eggplant" not the n word!!!!! In Italian slang having the same effect!!! And most importantly it's just a movie!!!

*I'm Sicilian and have heard this story a bunch of times by my old man. There IS a ton of truth to it and if you ask the very wealthy north of Italy what they think of Sicilians, alot of them call us with brown skinned Sicilians dirty farmers and call us the "black people" of Italy's history.*

Then again, many of the northern Italians were Fascists, who supported both Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler during WW II. While the people in southern Italy and Sicily largely hated both the Fascists and the Nazis.

This story is not very historically accurate.
1. Moors were mostly middle eastern (Arab, Berbs) and southern European. Only a few were subsaharan (black).
2. Southern Italians were not the same blood as northern. Northern Italians had Celtic, Germanic blood as well as Latin. Whilst Southern italians had more Latin and a bit of Norman blood. They were white southern Europeans.
Another thing, modern day Sicilians are about 95% European blood, with most of that 5% being maghrebi. So yeah, the med appearance of southern Italians is mostly native rather than foreign as is often claimed by some.

Quentin Tarantino is a genius writer. He really knows how to pick the actors to put his vision together perfectly.

What awesome acting! Hopper went from scared security guard to a fuck you Detroit officer he used to be in seconds. Accepting his fate and taking the last and only available attack before going out which was completely annihilate Walkens entire race to his face! Walkens quote "Tell the angels you've never seen evil so personified as you did in the face of the man that killed you" didn't mean shit! I hope when i go out i can be that bad ass!
The hysterical laughter is a thing of beauty.What a great film.

I think I read somewhere the "You're a cantaloupe" line was an improv by Walken and they left it in...
It's true. Walken wasn't aware of "eggplant" as a racist insult against blacks. His cataloupe line was his attempt at a comeback to keep the dialogue going. And the laughing from everyone immediately after was real.
Or he implied that he "can't elope" ....

Don't take great dialogue as fact just cause you love a movie, read up in the real history, most times the true events of our history are even more shocking!!!
That's not true at all. You can say whatever you want in writing if the context isn't stupid and bigoted. Look at Three Billboards in Ebbing Missouri which was extremely successful just a few years ago. but I think this scene is a reflection of Quentin Tarantino's infatuation with the N word and desire to use it as often as possible and that shit is pretty dated. It's not offensive, it's just cringe.
@@jermyhopkisn9654 this scene is so powerful on this level. Its between two incredibly gifted actors , Hopper's character realises that he's going to die no matter what he says!!! Hense the tone changes when he asks for his last cigarette after declining it initially. He then uses that last few minutes not only enjoy his last smoke but to also insult his executioner!!! What he said isn't entirely true!!!!! I'm sure I read years ago that both actors did improvise with the scene a little. The word you mentioned is used cause he knows it's insulting to Walkens character, as hes racist . It's also very ironic, the last insult he called him was "eggplant" not the n word!!!!! In Italian slang having the same effect!!! And most importantly it's just a movie!!!
