  • My 2013 VW Tiguan Turbo, water pump and speed sensor finally broke and they went bad at 57,700 miles. In this video, I will answer the question "Is the VW/Volkswagen Tiguan expensive to repair? & Should you buy the extended warranty If you buy it used?

    I have watched a couple of videos where people trashed VW Tiguans for having expensive repairs. Well, If you buy a 5 year old car for 15k, vs a new one for 50k then you have still some money left for repairs. I ve just got Tiguan SEL-R 2022 and it is an amazing car. I hope I can make at least 3 years without any issues. My friend bought a 4 year old BMW, has it for 7 years now and a car was once in a shop. Meanwhile, most people will say BMW are expensive and don't last long. All depends on your luck with purchase.

    EJ the video is a little dated, but I felt compelled to respond because I also have a VW (VR6 Jetta). It seems that VW relies more on it's brand to sell vehicles than actually selling on reliability and safety. A big problem across all VW's is that many of the attached parts to the engine (non-drive-train, parts) are made of plastic, such as the water pump, so they all start to go bad and you will be replacing them every 40,000K. Also, plastic is brittle and will break with all the heating and cooling. So their choice to use plastic on some of these parts is very questionable. Also, now that you've had an issue with the water pump, everything related to it will start to break down including the header gasket. I'm assuming the amounts you paid are in USD so I'm also looking at the exchange rate at 30% being in Canada.
    My final thoughts on VW's. I think they build nice looking cars that are a lot of fun to drive and use some good quality interior materials, but the problems your going to have and the expense doesn't make them worth while vehicles for most people. Hope you have a garage at home and some good tools to help cut down repair costs.

    • @ejsgarage
      @ejsgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Oliver. Your comment is spot on! I agree. VW builds good looking cars but unfortunately they started to use a lot of plastic in their cars which lowers the reliability after 40K miles. This is why I started my TH-cam channel to teach people how to do their own DIY maintenance to cut down the cost of ownership.

    • @olivergoncalves1217

      @@ejsgarage Ya. I was pretty dissapointed by the number of defects that become very evident with my VR6 at about 45,000KM. They do drive nice and look nice and boy they nailed it with the MK4's/VR6, but some of the defects really left me questioning the brand and safety of these cars. Example. resistance build up would cause the fuse box, under the hood to melt, even catch on fire. That caught me off guard doing 120KM/hr on the 401 with NO POWER. The FIX - go ONE GAUGE UP on the cable. Plastic thermostat housing, plastic water pump, plastic intakes (radiator) are all part of the cooling system.

      The turbo on VW Tiguan will break around 50k miles. It depends on how hard and often you drive the car. I drive very long distance to go to work.

      @@ejsgarage i just bought 2014 Tiguan 2.0 TSI 58 000km on the clock. So I shd expect turbo to go bad at 80k? That means new turbo every 80k, is that normal in every VW model as they share engines.

    • @ejsgarage
      @ejsgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how you are going to drive the car. Some people told me that their Turbo never goes bad.

      @@ejsgarage Tiguan is a 🍋 car, don't you ever buy a tiguan, it will die after 53k and trust me, you will start the adventure, roof leak when it rains, AC draining inside the car, timing belt, turbo problems, sometimes it stalls in the middle of the road for no reasons, not good for winter drive, water pump problems........etc. Please stay away from VW.
