    I am totally convinced that two of my ancestors dropped in on a spaceship. One was born in Tennessee in 1812 and the other born in either Georgia or Virginia in 1808. I would give up but this is driving me nuts. lol

    I have another tip I use when searching for county records. If I find that so and so were in say in... Calloway County, Kentucky, I put in my browser, calloway county kentucky genealogy and then scroll down to the "links" section and then find the Archives section. I have found useful info from going directly to the county sites so check the specific counties.

    Our family has hit a proverbial brick wall for 35 years on two family members. After about a month of digging into my grandfather and a two other relatives research documents, along with studying the census and looking for like names I at least tracked down the son. Even have a burial location finally but no death cert yet or probate. The father however was born supposedly in Wilson Co TN in abt 1803 (based on an 1860 Census) but there is zero record of him at all in TN, not even a marriage record to his first wife or the birth of his first 4 sons. That is a brick wall. You have given me some very great tips and my first stop will be Presbyterian Church records during that time in NC and TN. Excellent video

    You are lovely and brilliant, Ms. Cowan! I would never have thought of all these options on my own so this video is not only informative and helpful but also relieving of my occasional discouragement with "dead ends". Thank you so much! (Incidentally, I'm descended from Cowans who homesteaded in Kentucky.) Happy holidays to you and yours!

    Any tips on finding family members in California prior to the gold rush, going back to Mexico or even Spain? We've traced the family back to 1870, and we believe the family was in California before it was part of the US.

    Thank you for the informative video. I have been sitting on the periphery, not yet ready to plunge into the databases at Ancestry. I think I will need to get a membership and explore a little bit.
    I have been picking at my family history for years. Family trips often included excursions to cemeteries and dusty town hall vaults.
    I am fortunate to have the family bible (earliest entry 1833). From this, I have searched records and books (Savage, et al.) for New England families with the name Dean(e) and variations. I have gotten back to 1670 where in Billerica, Massachusetts, William Deane married Martha Bateman (recorded on Sept 1, 1670)
    I am stuck here.
    William may be of the Taunton, Massachusetts Walter Deane Family. Savage mentions that there are three additional children of Walter, whose names do not appear.
    I think William may be Walter’s son because so many first names appear in both families. (Samuel, Ebenezer, William, John, etc.) Though these might be common names for the time and place.
    Any suggestions on finding a link if one exists?

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Allan Dean Massachusetts has kept excellent records (at a town level) since the mid-1600s. You can search those here: search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2495

    @melissaunruh7517 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    dealynn17 I don't know if you have tried this but it might help and what the video says will direct you... If you come from a family line of enslaved people using the surname and area of birth for your relative (and year if you know it or an approximation) will get you to an area to search and families (the surname maybe taken from the family they were freed from.) to search for. You can narrow down your search that way with 1850 census to find HoH that meet criteria. Using Slave schedules to see if any of the families have a persons matching age and gender of your relative may also help, then look at probate records. Your relative maybe have been mentioned in the Will. Sometimes the enslaved person was "inherited" by other relatives and sometimes freed but there is a chance that they will be listed,

      That is very GOOD information! I am white if it matters.. My family is from WV who split from VA. Because it was a hot discussion. going on at that time, My Blue relatives moved to Indiana Ill, My grey families moved south..and some of them were brothers. AND as appalled as I am, to find relatives who had slaves..I do find African Americans with MY family names. To bad there is not a data base to report when we find African Americans in Our trees..That could provide some help!

    • @pamelahawn9300
      @pamelahawn9300 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pamela Hawn Just wanted to ADD that many slaves were slowly set free when the beliefs of the white people became convinced that IT was a sin to have slaves. So, the slaves, so happy to be released toke on the name of their former Owner. There are records in some counties when this happens....It went through the court systems. So Names are listed.

    is there anyway to get physical resources that might be stored somewhere like pictures of relatives?

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xPancakes4lf, Yes, it's possible to get copies of records or photos. Once you've identified what records or photographs you want, contact the society, library or archive from where the collection you're interested in is housed and inquire about their records request policy. Each society or institution is different and some may require a small fee to retrieve and send the record to you, others may be free but ask for a donation as they may be run by volunteers.

    • @luckyb3859
      @luckyb3859 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The church records may be better in the "old country".
      Early American pioneers can get lost on the American frontier, particularly in the early 19th century, around the time of The Second Great Awakening. They were "over the mountains" pioneer migrants and land squatters.
      The evangelical Protestant sects were frequently tended by circuit riders keeping no records. There was little government in the backwoods, and cabins and court houses burned or flooded in high water. Any Family Bibles containing records from that period are closely held, and not public.
      Having a Roman Catholic or Jewish background would be a bonus due to better clerical or religious records. Some people with Jewish backgrounds can trace lineage to the Tribes of Israel.
      Having a Mormon ancestor can be a bonus, since somebody has already done a lot of research.

      for sephardic ancestors you have to check the Inquisition Records in Spain & Portugal. Some are online. Some require hiring a local genealogist since they are on paper only in archives.
      got to Ancestry.com & also to ftdna.com for genealogy. ftDNA has a large database of Jewish dna.

    My great great grandfather was born between 1856 and 1858 in Illinois. I really wish I knew his parents names and am working on obtaining his marriage record which I hope will have his parents information. I am lucky to have been able to dig deeper into his wife's side. I was just thinking the same thing. When she speaks of land and tax records, clearly she is NOT speaking of blacks.... they were slaves and not even considered a person, but cattle. So how are we supposed to locate our African relatives pre1850? Whites are not the only ones using this site... She needs to be more inclusive!
