    Hi, how is M1 compared to your M4?

    Hi, I purchased the M1 about two years ago. Best hammer I ever owned. I was meaning to get a finishing head for it, as well as the cats paw bar but I wasn’t sold on the square. Is it a true 90 & 45 degree?

      absolutely! i forget the tolerances but they are very very well tuned in to be exact. i even compared it to 2 of my woodpeckers squares and they are exact!!! the best part is that you can drop it without the edges being "rolled" like the aluminum squares. its amazing to see the accuracy along with such durability.

      nothing wrong with questioning these products. after all, you should feel certain and confident in a product with a higher price tag. i haven't tried diamondback although it has been mentioned, I've been using the atlas 46 rigs for a few years now with great results

    I was only comparing the different m4 heads and was wondering why you decided on the one you picked. I hadn’t considered the cats claw before but now I might giving how much you love it. Thanks for the response !

    Hey man can you do me a solid and how exactly did you go through a speed square and another one like how did they become worn out and unserviceable I'm just really curious?

    • @blacklabelcarpentry
      @blacklabelcarpentry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had a couple empire squares, and they're great for the price, but being on a job site, you know these things can get dropped quite a bit, resulting in the points being mushroomed, and the edges left rough. I've managed to scrape drywall, dry glue, and drop the square on various surfaces including concrete, and to my surprise, its like its brand new. Durability aside, the martinez square feels much nicer in the hand (personal preference)

      @@blacklabelcarpentry I understand, I am a electrician apprentice so I feel you on how tools are on the field vs a pro'sumer DIY. idk if you said it in your vid, but I immediately just assumed you was a carpenter. though I do think the square is very innovative, I do hate how they grab us by the balls and slap a 250$ price tag on it. cant find a square like this anywhere else.
      As a electrician apprentice, I have yet to utilize that speed square to it's upmost capacity in usage. So I cant have a justification on getting that yet. Interesting to hear that. My Diamondbacks costs 500$ for my set up, people refuse to believe me when I tell them my regular toolbelt did not even last me through 3 months of everyday use. Diamond back was worth every fucking penny.

      @@rodmanbrutus1671 i am a fine finish carpenter by trade, but have ventured into making handcrafted fine furniture. despite being in "finish", i still do plenty of framing/rough carpentry too when needed. i spoke to mark personally about the price and a lot of it is to do with the fact its titanium. its an expensive material to begin with, but is known for being lightweight and very strong.
      i think as an electrician, a speed square doesn't always need to be deadly precise like a finish carpenter would need, even then, everyone has their tolerances. I've heard nothing but great things about the diamondback belts. maybe if i got sent one to test out, id give it a go, otherwise ill just stick with the atlas 46 for now as its been working great. feel free to follow me on instagram "mullaney woodworks" if you're on that platform

    Regarding the hammer heads- how do you like the claw? I haven’t used a wide one like that before. I like the rounded face over the square face And it Also seems like the staple claw might be more novel than practical. What made you buy the wide claw and how do you like it compared to the more traditional claw?

    • @blacklabelcarpentry
      @blacklabelcarpentry  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been loving it. i find the wider claw is less damaging to the material since the pressure is dispersed over the whole claw, vs a traiditial claw that has 2 pressure points. when removing material, i get a good bite on the material so it doesn't slip. the staple claw/cats paw has been amazing!!!! definitely not a novelty by any means. i was using it the other day to remove some 16 penny nails in some framing, and its so sharp that i could dig out the buried nails, and use all the leverage i wanted to remove them. i even tried to "abuse" the claw and use it to remove stucco from the corner of a soffit, thinking the claw would round over and not be sharp, and to my surprise it has remained sharp and still pointed. I even use the cats paw under solid core 10-0 doors to lift them up and the claw shows no signs of giving up. i have been thoroughly impressed to say the least.

    Nice rundown brother! There tools look sicc! I so wish I could justify spending this type of money for all 3! I’ve been following them for years 😃 I’m a finish carpenter so use a 4-1/2” square, two faced mallet & a very thin flat pry bar. There is a Wiha mallet Im grabbing soon! Maybe Martinez should make 1!? Oweee🤣 all of those tools are “just” outside of my playing field. I use my actual hammer maybe 1-2/week for something quick. My pops gave it to me & is about 25-30 years old lol but I keep her clean! I think eventually when I can set up a shop in my garage that square will hit the mark! I also have been eye’n PEC/Woodraphic & iGaging machinist/double/combo squares! Not to mention woodpecker, but price truly does come into play when I decide. Titanium is just so sexy!

      I appreciate it! Just buy 1 of his tools and the rest just make sense. They're all beautiful to use but id say the flat bar is a favorite as its lightweight, thin, and doesn't flex at all compared to those chrome ones. As for the hammer, he created a rubber attachment made from a high quality component so it really takes the abuse without marring material. I was a finish carpenter too (mainly in the shop now) but i still find myself using things such as the cats paw from time to time, and its just so enjoyable! I have quite a few woodpeckers items too, really nice stuff, just don't drop it lol. The Martinez stuff takes the abuse and stays true, thats why i use it in the field, and leave the woodpeckers to the shop. As for your fathers hammer, thats very special, but id be terrified to have it stolen on a job site!!!! Hang it up on the wall and just appreciate the amount of work it has done with your dad, then you can pass on a Martinez hammer! If you're ever on instagram, feel free to stop by! @MullaneyWoodworks

    So I may be naive, but say you were a framer, would you not just get the head that’s equivalent to a 2 pound hammer to really drive the fastener?

    • @blacklabelcarpentry
      @blacklabelcarpentry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're a framer, i would go for the M1 which is a 15oz framing hammer. All the heads are interchangeable, but you have to figure out which length and grip works best for you. The M79 is the sledge head. While you may be able to drive something faster, i think its overkill for setting a nail, plus you have to swing and carry that around all day. I believe it was created to be more of a demolition head

      I have the Atlas 46 "carpenters apprentice" rig. i believe thats the name. it has the tool belt and suspenders with all the padding you can get. i get a lot of neck pains so i find the atlas to be quite comfortable after 8-10 hours use in a day

    How is the vibration on it

    • @blacklabelcarpentry
      @blacklabelcarpentry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really not much at all. With the new green rubber cover, there is nothing, but that is used mainly in trim. When you remove the rubber cover, its very minimal due to the Titanium handle which soaks up most of the vibration. That was one thing that Mark Martinez had mentioned when making this hammer is that he wanted to build it from titanium for not only the weight saving and strength, but the fact it removed a large portion of the “shock” so guys like framers wouldn’t end up with tinnitus or tennis elbow in 10-15 years.

      Each to their own. I will say to this very day after daily use, it still looks brand new and has no crumpled edges like my empire once had. I’m a buy once, cry once kind of guy. Thanks for stopping by!
