  • This is Day 7 of 12 - of our "Song of the South" 75th Anniversary Tribute. This Scene is a Part 3 of the "Tar Baby Scene". It features: Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear and Brer Fox. Brer Fox finally catches Brer Rabbit and is trying to decide how to kill him. Brer Rabbit uses one of many tricks to escape the clutches of the fox. He tells Brer fox not to throw him into the briar patch. Using this reverse psychology, Brer Fox throws him into the Briar Patch which was Brer Rabbits home all along. This scene inspired the big drop on the ride 'Splash Mountain'.

When I went to Disney World and went to Splash Mountain I asked my mom what the ride was about. She told me that this ride was based on the story "Song Of The South" she had learned about as a kid. And after the ride was over I was amazed by this. This is truly a piece of storytelling history espeically in a difficult time in history. It's always important to tell kids about this- so we learn and continue to carry this story with us so future generations can enjoy this story, learn a thing or two about the past and even eventually become the next generation of storytellers. :)

Bootleg DVDs are available online. I saw this as a child and have recently seen it again; Uncle Remus's plight is not disguised and the mother is clearly a racist. The opening of "darkies" singing as they return home from the fields may have contributed to the bad reputation. I always wanted my own Uncle Remus, and the film contributed to my appreciation of Black people while I was living in a racist state in the 50s.

When I was kid uncle Remus would put me to bed. Some really good wisdom in the stories, bare rabbit wants to run away from his problems but as Uncle Remus says theres not a place that far. There are people in this world that want to do you harm. You have to keep your wits when dealing with them. Don’t get needlessly offended, always works against you. Some problems get bigger the more you mess with them. I’m older now but grew up in the south. The ways these folks looked and talked was almost exactly as they are portrayed, it was a reality not a racist stereotype. It endeared me to them with deep respect due to the wisdom of Uncle Remus.

You know this breaks my heart, knowing how modern disney is now its very sad to say the least.
These characters were in a special place in Walt's heart, he even loved the "Uncle Remus" stories and wanted to make this film especially to tell those stories and enjoy loveable characters. It's sad that disney took the ride down, because I've never rode the ride ever in my life, cus i was to little to ride it a long time ago, and didn't had another opportunity to go to Disney cus its to freaking expensive now. I even love the Brer's personalitys so much and even love the artstyle within the film itself. I just hope one day maybe Disney will shine light and look back into this classic and hopefully bring it back that it deserves.

"Song of The South" isn't racially insensitive. It takes place after the Civil War, so the African("black") people in it are not slaves, and the movie is about the friendship between a young "white" boy and an old "black" man. It's a positive movie with positive messages. The only reasons that anybody thinks that this movie is racially insensitive are that they haven't done their research and assume that the film takes place before or during the Civil War, and the fact that Disney, thanks to Michael Eisner and Bob Iger, has not given the movie any kind of official release since 1986(other than some VHS and Laserdisc releases in certain countries), which only helps to perpetuate the notion that the movie is racially insensitive. If Disney had released the movie on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray worldwide, there would be very few, if any, people who think that "Song of The South" is racially insensitive. Is it a great movie? No, but it is a good movie with a positive message of friendship, and it deserves to be defended, and I will continue to do so. Disney needs to release the film on Blu-ray and make it available on Disney Plus, with bonus features included, including a feature-length documentary on the film's creation, release, and legacy. Also, Walt Disney wasn't racist. The "black" actors who were in the film were not allowed to attend the film's world premiere at the Fox Theater in Atlanta,GA, but that wasn't Walt's fault. It was 1946 and segregation in the American South was a thing by that point. Walt hated the fact that the "black" actors weren't allowed to attend the premiere, but, obviously, there was nothing that he could do about it. Walt made it possible for James Baskett(the actor who played Uncle Remus and Brer Fox) to get an Oscar for his portrayal of Uncle Remus. #ReleaseSongofTheSouth and #DonotchangeSplashMountain.

The issue is attempting to rewrite history by showing that black and white people got along “great” during the reconstruction era and Jim Crow laws. That and showing that recently freed slaves went back to working on plantations because they loved it and that they got paid well when you know damm well it wasn’t that way. This movie isn’t outright racist or atleast not intentionally, but it has several negative stereotypes and leaves a sour message over a poor time in history by making it look “bright and pretty”

While I do like the sentiment behind your statement in racial acceptance, the film itself still treats black people as an inferior group of people and perpetuates a ton of racial stereotypes of the day. It isn't directly racist like Birth of a Nation, it's more unwittingly racist. And one of the biggest pieces that was not just in the movie but in the production itself that perpetuated this unwittingness was when the actor who played Uncle Remus, arguably the lead of the film since he headlined the posters, was not allowed to attend the premiere because it was a white's only theater.
