    Important thing to note -
    So the original run of Shaman King in Weekly Shonen Jump was ended prematurely by Takei (as in, he wasn't able to give it the ending he wanted) due to the stress of being a mangaka. However, a couple years later he wrote the ending he planned in one of Shueisha's other magazines along with a re-release of the whole series titled: Shaman King Kanzenban (which like the title would imply, was re-formatted from tankobons into kanzenbans). This new print by Kodansha is actually a translation of Shaman King Kanzenban that's been formatted back into Tankobons (lol) with redrawn art of the OG volume covers by Takei (his current art's super dope, if you've already read the series maybe consider checking out shaman king: flowers or shaman king: the super star, the direct sequels). Anyways the main point and ig tl;dr is this new print will actually be 12* volumes, not 11* (Kodansha has already re-formatted kanzenban into tankobons and released it digitally on their website as 35 volumes, as opposed to the original 32) and contain the "true" ending of the series.

    With all the spin-offs that came out recently it's kinda annoying to keep track of everything. So for those wondering, the best reading order is as follows:
    - The original series
    - Flowers
    - Red Crimson
    - Marcos (ongoing)
    - The Super Star (ongoing)
    - Zero
    It's not in chronological order. It would spoil some stuff if it where.

    I really like shaman king and collecting it today was a really hard job on it's own so I really love the fact that kodansha came up with the idea of reprinting it in the form of these beautiful omnibus and as expected from kodansha, they did a great job. The quality of the pages from what I can see from here is more like I am a hero omnibuses which is a really good thing. Considering the spine, this is something that am really happy with too. Well the minor changes in the reprinting really brought a new tone to the manga that makes it reading more fun. Overall a really good reprint and btw, a really nice video ryley with an honest review

    Cool! Shaman Kings is actually set to release for the first time in my country in like a month, and our publisher has the licence for the Kodansha version which is pretty exciting :D I've already preordered it! The original anime was pretty huge in Poland back in the day I'm actually surprised that it's only now that we're getting the manga. Probably because of the remake anime reviving hype for the series.

  • @davef85
    @davef85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It looks like the Kodansha version used a later printing/ updated version of the series. Sailor Moon did the same. For the last release or so in Japan, the original creator went through and updated the art to make things more consistent and aesthetically pleasing.

  • @MoonlitKarma
    @MoonlitKarma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Kodansha made it look more professional. And all the superficial edits and touch ups are nice. Haven’t gotten my copy yet (April 6th), But I am stoked! Even if it’s a bit chonky 😅.
    Edit: Anna is probably the next character on the spine. The cloth to the right of Yoh looks like part of her headband.

    I've been a fan of Shaman King since the early Shonen Jump days - which was my introduction into manga as it were. The thing was, that I hadn't internet while growing up and finding manga nearby in stores was so rare it might as well have been impossible a lot of the time, especially when you're a kid with no means of transportation. Getting older, however, provided the opportunity to expand my collections from just anime to manga; although my first 'major' hunt was for Rave Master. Unfortunately I spent a lot of time and money completing that, that I missed out on Shaman King's OG print. TL;DR - these Omnibuses are a god send and as long as they're faithful translations and readable, I'm all in and can't wait to finally own this series in full. All the nostalgia at my finger tips, it's gonna be goooood. :)

    I stumbled onto this video and was not disappointed. I am beyond happy that the new edition is returning the honorifics and original katakana sound effects. I don't know about modern viz titles, but the earlier ones like Shaman King always seemed odd with their edited sound effects and lack of honorifics. The spines will definitely look very nice on a shelf. I'm not sure if the spine characters will match the front cover though, based on that white cloth corner. Omnibus 2's cover is supposed to be Anna, but that corner of cloth and it's placement compared to Yoh makes me think Faust VIII.
    Sorry for the super long comment on the first video I've ever seen from you. Shaman King has and will always be a favorite series.

    • @omnibuscollector
      @omnibuscollector  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s odd because in Kenshin they made a huge deal about the honorifics and had a translation glossary in the back of each volume, but typically they weren’t a focus of Viz/SJ.

    Thanks for this video! Definitely looks like an upgrade to me, so I'll be switching over. I've been upgrading way too many of my manga lately, but it really feels so worth it to have my favorites in much more showcase-worthy volumes.
    Speaking of Kodansha, I'm in love with their hardback volumes of Saiyuki that were released, and I was more than happy to move on from my TokyoPop volumes. Really hoping they release the rest of the series, considering Reload was never completed in it's English publication, let alone the rest of the series.

    I've never read Shaman King before but REALLY want to since I love battle shonen and from everything in this video it seems like the Kodansha versions are pretty much just improvements without detriments and is also currently in print and cheaper than tracking down the original VIZ releases, not to mention the original VIZ only has the first 32 volumes and they never published the final three volumes with the true ending, so to me the Kodansha reprints just seem like the obvious choice.

Given the cultural background of the character I feel like Bailong makes more sense.

    I love that they redid the lettering for this release. I heard it was going to use the Viz translation so I thought it was going to be a kinda hodgepodge of the Kanzenbang edition and Viz editions for the first 32 volumes and that first wave of Jump releases had really... not idea lettering work (probably because of deadlines and amount of stuff they are putting out) but really good translation quality so I'm happy this version is doing justice to the strong translation work and polishing up the sometimes weird or bad lettering

  • @taigaaisaka6305
    @taigaaisaka6305 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To be completely honest, I am disappointed with these editions. I am from Mexico and I usually buy the American/USA editions as they are about 90% of the time of higher quality than the ones released in Spanish/Mexico, plus also slightly better translated. Here in Mexico they are also reprinting Shaman King with all the enhanced stuff, I didn't bought them initially because of the Kodansha announcement of this 3 in 1 reprints, however, after getting said version I was actually quite shocked at how low quality it is compared to the Panini (Spanish/Mexican) version. Standard size, thin paper, uninspired spines, etc. In contrast, the spanish versions are bigger, come with thick dust covers with a nice matte finish, the spines look gorgeous and the best thing about it: It comes with several pages in color and a postcard/mini poster with the art of the original covers, like the ones that come in the Card Captor Sakura Collector's Edition. They are also half the price. Really, all I can say is: Shame on you, Kodansha, for putting so little effort into these reprints.

    I passed up volumes 4-17 of Shaman King and 2 volumes of Hitman Reborn going for cheap at a flea market without knowing what they're worth. But this new release looks better in every way to me, aside from having 3 in 1 volumes meaning less cover art. But the new art is drawn by Takei himself, so that's a plus.

    Bruh...hope they also do this for Ultimo, another Takei manga. I have 1-10 of that from way back when it was still actively releasing but damn now it's hard to find the later volumes because of that sweet sweet OoP madness.
    Also I still find myself singing the Shaman King opening. It stuck with me for so long.

      @@omnibuscollector I slept on it when the 10th volume was rolling out. I was too focused on school to keep up with the hobby and eventually forgot it altogether. It actually wasn't until a week or 2 ago that I look at my shelf, see it, then google it only to find I don't have vol 11 or 12.
      There are NO listings anywhere for 11 or 12 unless you're prepared to shell out over 100$(cheapest I could find was 120$ for 11 and Amazon resellers are basically trying to rob you)....so yeah I'm so upset with myself for that...It feels so wrong to only be missing 2 volumes...

    I have these volumes up to 25, and I have the last one vol 32. But the books in between are so expensive that I'm excited to get the omnibus versions when those volumes come out. I managed to get vol 1 - 24 from a kijiji purchase for about $70 cad total, and vol 25 & 32 at a comic book store that sold them for retail price. I would've liked to complete the original set, but yeah the after market costs are a bit to much for me to justify buying.

    I'm a giant art nerd, so what Kodansha has done for Shaman King is treat the original material with tremendous respect and while I always hunt down the Shonen Jump volumes because of the covers, I will definitely be collecting Kodansha's editions and I would probably read those instead.
    In Shonen Jump's defense, back then manga tankobon were a new thing and TokyoPop was killing it and they were late to the show so I'm not surprised they still had these ridiculous notions of acclimatizing the work for English readers. Now that manga is entrenched in America and major publishers have shown what a buying force it is more money and care is put into the product. I'm glad Shonen Jump brought us Shaman King, because I love it, but I am so much happier that Kodansha has it and is willing to give it the love and care it deserves. And if Kodansha releases them series, AGAIN, but in Hard Cover, I will gladly buy those as well, since I love the original series so much.

    Now I wish Kodansha would do the same for Zatch Bell!, now that they have the rights after Raiku sued Shogakukan, and VIZ had to drop it. Like Shaman King, the later volumes have gotten hard to find and more expensive... :/

    Seems like I might go for the Kodansha print since it (at least based on volume 2) is using more pure translations as far as naming conventions using Pairon versus Viz's use of Bailong. Still kinda split honestly but might just settle down with Kodansha and see how it goes.

    I own the original 32 volumes but I will be picking up the Kodansha reprint for sure. I'm not a big manga collector in general but the original manga ending is sudden and pretty poor. The 'true' ending wasn't printed in English so this edition will be the first chance to get the proper ending physically in english.
    I could just get the last couple omnibuses in a few years but with all the small translation changes and editing choices (plus the continuous image accross the spines) getting the whole series seems worth.

    I own Volumes 1 - 17 of the original printing but getting 18 - 32 without destroying my wallet has proved quite difficult so I am excited to get the new Kodansha print in place of those volumes but I plan to keep my 1-17 of my original prints as well because I just love the covers. I really wish these new kodansha prints had been identical in style to their Vinland Saga volumes which have the hard cover and have the slightly longer and wider pages I think that would've really been a bigger draw for the new editions. I still like the new printing but still think they could've done a bit more to draw old readers to the new version.
    For those unaware if you have an Amazon Prime account you can actually read the entire Kodansha printing digitally for free via Amazon prime! It's how I have been rereading the series and it's been a good experience for anyone who wants to just re read the series easily!
    Additionally Riley on the topic of Takei I recently remembered the series he did with Stan Lee, Karakuridoji Ultimo, I don't remember if you had the series in your collection videos but wanted to hear your thoughts on the series if you ever read it or what you think about those volumes recently starting to rise in price on the secondary market as they are long out of print. Would be really cool to hear your thoughts!
