Great performance, I hear Zappa and his always top-tier session musicians and I can only ever think "Genius! The guy was a freaking genius"

RDNZL (Pronounced: Re-DUN'-zel) was written in the early 1970s (probably 73-74) and was originally released on an unauthorised Warner Brothers album in 1978 called Studio Tan. It also appeared on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Volumes: 2 and 5 as well as on numerous bootleg recordings. It has become a "classic" favourite of Zappa" fans" worldwide for its beautiful melodies, contrasting musical sections and his fire guitar solo
Great composition by a great composer! Amazing to hear and to watch...
(Tommy Mars on keys!!! the mad scientist! )
The name would be a contraction of redundant and Rapunzel, a nickname that Frank gave to his wife Gail! apparently she used to repeat herself a lot..

Because of the spelling, it's also a pun on the American gear-stick

@@Grithron2I know that story too,but it's R( reverse) N( neutral) D( drive) S( sport mode) L ( low), and Zappa wasn't driving,so, in absence of concrete infos both are valid hypothesis!
there is also Ruth Doesn't Need Zappa's Lyrics...
with Frank Zappa everything is possible...

    Great live version.
The beginning was done at a much slower tempo than the original release and , of course, the bulk of it is spontaneous solos and back and forth.

    Great video
Rory keep up great work keeping Franks memory alive
I keep suggesting a full Joes Garage reaction because I would hate to see the songs split up and taken out of context
    Please do full Joes Garage

    They're pretty good musicians
    They're pretty good musicians
    They're pretty good musicians
But it don't make no difference
    If they're good musicians
Because anybody who would buy this record
Doesn't give a fuck if there's good musicians
    On it
Because this is a stupid song
AND THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT

One of my faves but please listen to the Studio Tan version, it makes far more sense. This is only notable for the fact the band can't see the audience and the massive fucking riot which is about to ensue 🤣

…and now for our next number! 😂. With Zappa his canvas was so unpredictable. I can only imagine what rehearsals must have been like.

    • @Grithron2
      @Grithron2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, there's rehearsal tapes in circulation (like on the FZ-LoTR channel) which tend to confirm your worst fears. If he wasn't on the insane Beefheart/Jackson level of "bandleaders you'd rather not be working for", he was at least on a par with workaholic hard-taskmasters like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Charles Mingus and Billy Ward.

The Mann/Mars trade-offs are an unexpected highlight - or maybe not unexpected because they'd been bandmates years before.
In case Rory doesn't know, the Aida Royal March was a standard "cue" in the 1980-82 era.

Have you listened to any Primus or other Les Claypool bands, or Phish , or Oysterhead which is LesClaypool , Trey Anastasio, and Stewart Coplan. Or maybe Screaming Headless Torsos, The Talking Heads , Can, Tool, System of A Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers , Brand X, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Rare Silk , Rollins Band, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bella Flek , Billy Strings , oh and of course The Mother's of Invention , Brian Eno... That's it off the top of my head but these are all bands or artists of various genres that you might enjoy. I'll try and get a better list later

  • @joelheberlein9740
    @joelheberlein9740 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I know you do a lot of different artists.
But you seem like you could really get into FZ.
    As well you should.
(Zappa's music is nothing less than other-worldly!🙂).
Might I suggest that you Google FZs song list and find the, "Album 1st Released On", breakdown.
Many concert versions can be wildly different, instramentally, and the lyrics have morphed over time to incorporate more recent randomonium, in part to keep things interesting for the musicians.
I think you'll really benefit from a deliberate approach, at least in your private listening.
    One caution though:
Listening to Zappa a lot, and for an extended amount of time, can make mainstream artist's music sound boring and predictable!
    Ask me how I know.
