I’m turning 59 next month. I keep current with my style, makeup, and hair. If I put something on and it causes me to question my appearance, age appropriateness, or comfort level, then it’s a “no”. I’m my best judge and I’ve learned to respect my decisions.

I also listen to my inner voice….if it’s not a quick Yes, then it’s not for me. I may not be able to articulate what looks or feels wrong, but I still know what’s right on me.

You are so right. Wear what you love. I’m 64 and I know short skirts and bikinis are no no for me but my neighbor who is 81 years young, still wears her bikini (not a thong) and looks great. Genes evidently play a large part in our aging process!

You're right, genes play a big part but so do our lifestyles, diets, exercise, etc.

Hi Serena! I love your tips! I’m 61 and I’m overweight and certainly won’t be at my desired weight by the end of summer. With that being said, I’m tired of being hot 🥵 (I live in the South too). I just bought some shorts that fit me (now) and I’ve decided that I’m going to wear them and not worry about what people may think. Thank you for being so inspiring.

I had given away all my shorts a few years ago because I thought I was too old to wear them. I started wearing shorts again at 67 because my legs still look good and I thought, why not? It's really hot here and they're comfortable! Mind you, they're not a 3" inseam but they're so much cooler and cuter than the capris I had resigned myself to wear. You certainly have great legs and you can rock those shorts! Thank you for doing this video and helping to boost the confidence of us older ladies who might have just given up trying to look stylish! ❤

I absolutely LOVE your take on the DON'Ts . Especially the shoes, and makeup ,they were hilariously "spot on" and the absolute truth. Keep doing them!!!! I'm 60 and do have the same body as 20 years ago. lol. I keep my ugly clothes for home and my current/ casual/ comfort /decent/ adult clothes for going out the door. I am 5'3" and 117 lbs. I like your videos . I grew up with {80s} model runway or magazine what to wear clothes , lol, that was ridiculous .

I like watching cool dresses in the summertime. I wear yoga shorts underneath the longer length ones so that my thighs don’t rub together. Keeps me cooler than wearing shorts, but I do wear dry fit shorts that keep me cool too.

Serena, you look beautiful in shorts. So many women are jealous and that's why they comment ugly things. You are doing a fantastic job. You have a sweet spirit and usually say these are your own opinion not disgracing ours opinions it simply your opinion. Our society has gotten to where they have their own opinion and theirs is the only one that is right. Don't buy into to their hostile attitude. This is the USA and you have a right to freedom on speak and opinion. No worries!

I’m 66, have always loved clothes and fashion. I wear Bermuda shorts and slightly shorter but not too much! I’m thin, only 115 lbs. but I don’t care for short shorts. I do love a nice skort….golf Skorts tend to be longer. Love body con dresses but not too tight so instead of small I usually buy medium. I feel great in them. Wear what you love and makes you happy…..just don’t dress as if you’re 90 when only in your 50’s/60’s neither dress like you’re in your 20’s/30’s. Have never and will never wear capris! Do love a nice ankle light weight Jean in summer.

I assure you; it is not the colder North that says to stop wearing shorts after a certain age. I never heard of such a thing until I started to follow some Style Influencers recently. I am in my 60's and when Boston gets hot, it is miserably hot and humid. I can't even breathe sometimes it is so oppressive. No women in my family, growing up ever stopped wearing shorts because they were over 50. I have photographs of my mother wearing shorts. Massachusetts has miles and miles of coastline, plus Cape Cod and the Islands, you are not going to tell any women I hang with who goes to their summer house not to wear shorts on the Cape or up to the lakes in NH. It is absurd, Serena. We have a beach and boating culture up here in New England; you can't boat and bike in long pants unless it is cold outside. I am pretty sure Jackie Kennedy wore shorts on Martha's Vineyard. Who is saying these things? Not anyone I know. Honestly, the first time I heard this, I wanted to tell these women to stop being such uptight busy bodies, like in some Victorian novel, shocked and gossipy..."oh the vapors"... They should go to Europe. I have seen topless grandmothers at the beaches there. Everybody should mind their own business. The complainers need to get out more often and travel a little, get out of their old fashion parochial ways. Greeze Louise. There are some women who want us all stuck in some old fashion notion of who and what a woman is. No one can define that; we are all different. I am not going back to the 1950's no matter what these hags and their male minions say. Now you got me all riled up. LOL Love ya!

I love this video, Serena! Age is just a number and I love dressing in what is current. It makes me feel good! I’m 54 and get told how young I look for my age. I attribute that to taking care of myself and dressing in clothes that flatter my body and are current. I’m only 5 ft tall so it’s really hard sometimes that find petite clothing that doesn’t make me look like I’m dressing like my grandmother! I love shopping at Loft for petite clothing and they almost always have sales. ❤

Yes i know we should all wear what we like but the key is “do we still look good in what we wore at 30”. If we’ve gained 20, 30 or more lbs. are short shorts, bike shorts, exercise tights, bikinis still appropriate? At 70 we all don’t look like Helen Mirren. My belief is everything in moderation. The same holds true if you’re 20, 30, or more. By the way you have great legs and may they remain the same when you’re 70🎉🎉

I have found that I look terrible in capris because I am short and I get tired of wearing shorts; the solution for me has been skorts. The golf skorts work for me. I like wearing classic clothes that never go out of style. Also activity appropriate outfits should be worn as well. Fashion rules help. Neutrals help. I'll be 61 aug and People never believe my age till I show them my driver's lic lol I still wear "young" clothes because they match my personality but I would never look hootchie-ish, I am a very modest person. I cover things up and always dress with class even in the sweatpants and sneakers, lether jacket or clunky boots.

Although I agree with a lot of what you say…I’ll just say this…I really, honestly and unequivocally do not give two monkeys what anyone else’s option of me is and what I wear. I think you have to be honest with yourself about your body shape and about your style. I’m glad to have reached an age when I can wear clothes that reflect me rather than slave to fashion and unlike my twenty and thirty something children I do not have the pressure of social media. It’s not that I don’t look at social media (obviously I’m watching), or do not gain ideas from it… I just won’t be dictated to about what I wear or how I wear it. Ladies love your age, love yourself and be kind to others.

I know what works and what good basic pieces work and what to add to them to be funky, classy, tailored etc. it should not be hard but it is. For example... they say wrap dresses are flattering in almost everyone. True. Find a REAL wrap dress in good fabric, in s plus size and it's a deal-breaker. I want something like the original DVF wrap like mom had in 1974. Well, you can get the real thing; for about $700 ish because that beautiful fabric isn't cotton jersey, it's silk jersey. I can't afford that. Bought one with good rating from Amazon ... not a true wrap dress and though I'm an 18w.... I'm not that big in top... only a C cup. Had to alter the top. Finally got a size 12 vintage DVF on postmark, took it to my neighbor who is a seamstress, we took it apart very carefully and made a pattern for my size as well as a pattern from the original and sewed the original back together. Ordered pima cotton jersey in a solid navy and a medium size geometric print, and ordered yardage in a light Marino wool in rust. They all drape beautifully. They look great on. Two are just above the knees, the wool is below. I can wear them with a heel, flats, tall boots or sandals. I still spent $700 but it was for three high quality dresses. And I now have a pattern to work from.
Should not be hard to find on my size. I still have a figure, just not the size six I had before menopause.
Jeans. I still like skinny jeans with some things, but a nice classy strait leg as well as flairs that start at it below the knees. I don't need the bulk at the top. But what should be a staple is hard to find in something that fits well. They always seem to have built-in saddle bags at the hips making them look sloppy and not clean. A nice fitted blazer... not too short, not too long with a bit of flair/flare at the waist and not boxy. We plus sizes are not from another planet... I might have larger upper arms but I clean up well. A jacket like that in velvet, gabardine, and maybe denim or a brushed denim. Nice white blouses, in cotton! I want quality fabrics that breathe. I'll pay more for staples that are on the classic/tailored size. I have a Zina Origami blouse in cotton that I got 20 years ago. I was a size six; it was one size. I still wear it, I'm an 18w and it STILL LOOKS GREAT and us flattering. I got it on sale for $50, they still make it is now $300 which given how versatile it is.... I'd probably pay that if I had to replace it.
Quality T -shirts that fit that I can wear to work... ugh. T-shirts are easy, high quality fabric that fits and is affordable is another story. However, I was a Chico's (which I generally avoid like the plague because I feel like I'm one of The Golden Girls every time I look at their stuff. However, even a broken clock is correct twice a day and voila! In a table they had puma cotton t-shirts... nice necklines, nice sleeves, good colors and pattern... $50 bucks. Heck yeah I'll pay that for a good nave, white, black T-shirt that looks like that.
Bryn Walker... asymmetrical but it works for me. With all the prairie dresses and return of Gunnie Sax... 61 is a bit old and I don't care for the twee prints on those prairie dresses. However, I have a vintage... don't be mad at me, if you your mom was s certain age in the 50s and saved everything... a Squ_ _w Dress (that's what they were called and if you want to find picks online... that's the magic word... not trying to offend anyone. It was a type of "patio" dress but if you google that you'll get other styles as well and I am taking a s pacific style. Even Lucy Ricardo had one... or two. So it was a dress that is like a blouse with a collar like a shirt but may not have buttons. Mine went right over the head. The opening is a vee so it's flattering. A bit more blousy on the top than a fit n flare dress. Furred st the waist, long full and tiered (not ruffled) on the skirt and made to wear belts with it. Embroideries or bric-a-brac in several colors , also cotton sometimes with some metallic thread. The shape is great and a great way to show off some Native American jewelry if you don't go over board. Pair it with huaraches, espadrilles, sandals, even Mocs or boots. With the right choice of fabric it can be fun without being crazy and it's a flattering shape. With all the boho and retro stuff I'm surprised it hasn't made a comeback. Maybe it's the name. I got one to make a pattern from, again with my neighbor and I'm just calling it my the "you can't call it that" dress and I plan on selling them as that.
Why don't they have more imagination for us bigger gals? Please give your thoughts. More heads are better than on... unless their on the same body... that would be a bit scary and hard on necklines.

Serena, LOVE your videos and style/brand tips❣️ I ordered three different pairs of P448 sneakers from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, size 36 returned (too small), one size 37 is on the way and another size 37 have arrived and I love them, the workmanship, style and comfort are impeccable, BUT my feet are somewhat wide, P448 do not come in a wide width, considering your familiarity with the brand, will they relax/stretch a bit? I need just a bit more room width wise! I’ll wear them on carpeting in the house for awhile to give them a chance and see how I feel. I also ordered the On Cloudswift Running Shoe and Dolce Vita Zina Sneakers, I am hoping to end up with one or two pair that look and feel marvelous!!!

They do break in after a bit. I loosen the laces to accommodate the wider part of my feet where my bunions are.

If you think you’re too old for trendy clothes or if you think 50+ year olds are too old for trendy clothes, that’s your opinion. The only reason why you are too old to wear clothes is when they no longer fit you.

Wonderful video Serena. I'm 65 and still wear shorts. I've never thought of not wearing them. 🙂 Did you ever look at the guys and old men that wear shorts. Now that is a "what not to wear". LOL. Love watching your videos from a New England gal.

I’m glad you addressed this subject. I agree with you. It absolutely depends on the individuals style. You look great in shorts! I am in my 60’s, and love to wear shorts. I WEAR denim shorts and feel quite confident as well as comfortable in them. Oh by the way your hair looks fabulous!

I'm "only" 45, and I agree 100% with you. The easiest way to update a wardrobe is with modern trouser cuts. A new jeans style can look damn cool. And don't be afraid of "young" shoes. My mother had never ever in her life worn sneakers. Ever. She FINALLY got a cute high top pair at 70 years old and she looks so good in them. It instantly makes her look and feel younger.

I am so thankful for this video. In a few days I will be 70 years old. All my life I have been told that I don't look my age and I'm thankful for that but lately I have been told that I shouldn't wear a certain thing because I am too old for that. I do dress modest and I am ok with my style. I love keeping current and I am will continue to do so. I know what looks good on me and as long as I know that I will continue to dress and wear what I like.

Thanks for the encouragement, I went thru the same thing. Very confident til I turned 50 and then all the sudden I started questioning myself because 50 was the turning point for me and I like wearing shorts and all I've been hearing is those are too short and I don't agree. Now I'm taking control of what I have always felt comfortable in. Everyone else can go blow in the wind. Thanks again Serena. I needed to hear that I'm not the only one going through that.

Great topic! Go ahead and wear your shorts....I thought the same thing when I turned 50 but my body was firm & guess what , I wore shorts. If you are flabby and your skin is loose, don't wear shorts. I didn't listen to anyone but my inner voice and living on the lake I wore shorts all summer. The only thing about shorts and I'm sure you have thought of this, wear sunscreen if outside. I went to the dermatologist alot getting lots of precancerous little irregular things off. I started using sunscreen all over then if outside by my derms recommendation. I use to love cutting grass on riding mower. Right now, I am doing strength training for BONE density three days a week since December but an unexpected payoff from that is being able to wear things I couldn't wear because the whole strength training program tightens everything from abs, core, legs, & arms and shoulders. Take care of what you got. Loved the video and you look cute as always!!!

Hello! Another great reminder dress to suit your style and taste, not age. My style is all over the place lol. Some days it's sporty, some classic and other days it's trendy. It's according to what mood I'm in that day. I have people comment on how nice I look especially in Walmart lol. It does make me feel good at 73. It's also younger girls that comment as well. I must be doing something right. You have gorgeous legs and wear the shorts! Don't let some old biddie tell you different (I know you won't). Thanks again for sharing this with us. I know it helps us to navigate the fashion trends. Have a good week!

....When I was age 56,I was very fit, I still wore a " modified Mini Skirts "( these are a bit above the knee) and I never thought twice about it... I was still able to pull off that look. ( even wore a Playboy bunny ensemble to a Halloween soiree, age 52)
So, yes, it is also about knowing what your body type is, and using clothing to accentuate your good piints... I've always had great legs, from years of working out, regular exercise, etc. So ladies... capitalize on your good features.... which also means take Modesty into account,.... with cleavage. Etc. ...you can still look fabulous and stay classy , it's a balancing act. I don't think I'd wear a bikini, because I believe that one piece Swimwear is much more flattering and classy, but that my personal preference.
