  • "We’re OK - neighborhood gone." Through that text message, Linda Parsons learned that the lives of her neighbors in the Forest Lake neighborhood of Tuscaloosa, AL were forever changed by a tornado. What she later learned discovered is that rebuilding a neighborhood destroyed by a storm is harder than she could have imagined. Linda shares the story of how the people of Forest Lake created a successful campaign to give their neighbors hope for the future and a reason to return home and rebuild. Their message? We Are Coming Back!
Linda Parsons, PhD, CPA, is an associate professor at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy. Her passion is studying nonprofit organizations, she teaches government and nonprofit accounting, and she researches the value of accounting information in giving decisions. In her personal life, Linda works with several community organizations dedicated to promoting and preserving the quality of life in Tuscaloosa neighborhoods. Her biggest challenge to date has centered on her work to assure the recovery and rebuilding of the Forest Lake Neighborhood, which was heavily damaged by the April 27, 2011 tornado.

I’ve gone through my own personal tornado. I got married for the first time in my life at age 51. I was not even a month away from my 52 birthday. Two years later I was kicked out of my home with a pfa and facing a divorce. All based on lies. And no one who could help me save my marriage would believe the truth. Or try to help. Now two and a half years later I am just beginning to heal. Thanks to a caring friend who wants me around and wants to be a close friend. It’s been said that you are either going into a storm, in a storm, or coming out of a storm.

awesome speaking, I helped clean up after Hurricane Ike , on Bolivar Peninsula, and so much you said makes me remember of what I heard and saw, and how people had to survive, and waited for Ins. co.s to pay them way less that what they needed to rebuild.
    Keep telling your story!
