I love everything about this game. It is maybe one of the most balanced games i've ever played. I've played at least 20 times and I can guarantee that there isn't one strategy that is better than the others (some cards work well together of course, but you never know if you're going to get them, so you'll have to adapt). I definitely recommand it and look forward to the expansion (beyond the gates)
Paper Tales is by far one of the best board games I ever played! It requires an incredible amount of strategy and flexibility to adapt your game to the cards that you receive every turn. If you start with a plan and try to keep it for the whole game, you will LOSE. You ought to modify your strategy and put together the cards you already had with the new ones you receive every turn. A hidden masterpiece, with a great mix of strategy, luck, and intuition. Just like life, isn't it? Edit: Also, Sam is very very wrong in his review. There are so many ways to win that I seriously wouldn't be able to count them all. I won with a Dragon that I kept alive for several turns, with a Kraken that does all sort of stuff, with a Mine and tons of crystals, by killing my own people for points, by building a meat empire and overrunning the enemies, by pumping all my age tokens on a Relic, by gaining a ridiculous amount of gold on the first turn and then playing MASSIVE stuff, by comboing together two buildings and then playing the Princess, by getting an Ogre and making it immense by gaining tons of money... the possibilities are seriously so many. I won't say endless, but so so so many. Zee gives the best description of what Paper Tales is about.
Oh, I too hate how in Blood Rage you either go Loki or have to fight well. I hate how it doesn't really let me diversify. Wait what game are we talking about I lost my train of thought
Exactly what popped into my head. A Blood Rage game where I lost a whole round because people hate drafted Loki cards away from me, so my losing strategy didn't pay off at all.
The first thing I thought when Sam said he likes games that reward you doing a little bit of everything is “that sounds like Stefan Feld games” and enjoyed the irony.
I think every Drafting game has the potential to hate draft, but at the expensive of your own condition. Deny the player 5 points, or draft the card you need and receive 7. Among The Stars, Blood Rage, Sushi Go and 7 Wonders all have this, and remind of why I love drafting games. Sam's argument here doesn't hold too much weight here overall, cause the same thing can happen in Blood Rage(his #1 game of all time), and when it does happen you adapt your strategy, and don't put all your eggs in one basket. I don't know I might be in the minority, but I see the appeal of this game, and would love to add this to my collection(along with 7 Wonders, ATS and Blood Rage)
Doesn't Blood Rage make you concentrate on a single strategy from the beginning?! I bet that if this had miniatures and/or hardcore art Sam would have loved it.
It seems to me that the fact that the players' characters will die, that will stop people from hate-drafting because if you waste a turn getting someone that ruins your own synergy, then you wasted points. But I do see Sam's point because it would be great to see a card or two rewarding players for having one of each character, building, resource, etc.
I agree with you totally, the right guy. The game is not balanced. It is really good but needs real adjustment. Also, making your town is tough. It must be easy. More abilities.

Is it me or is Sam just a man-child? Does he like ANYTHING but war games? I've been watching for awhile and i just find his attitude draining. Zee solo gaming is great but I just cannot listen to Sam complain.
I like Sam's contrary opinion on this game. He is giving a valid perspective from his point of view. I find it refreshing that not everyone is in love with the game and it can help me reinforce my own opinion. Based on this and other play throughs I think this could be a nice quick enjoyable game.
Very odd that an average looking card game is a Miami Dice. It looks like a forgettable game that Zee should have reviewed alone. Why this was chosen as a Miami Dice is head scratching.

This game is hard to find. if you can find it, it’s super expensive. Looks good but will wait till it drops in price.
