This is one of my all time favorite albums and it helped shape me into who I am today. When I was a kid (about 10-13 years old) I was just starting to get into music, skateboarding, art, and comedies like the Airplane movies or anything funny and abstract. I got a copy of Big Lizard when I was in 5th grade (probably around '88) and it blew my mind! I never heard anything like that in my life. Living in Southern PA in the 80's, we were surrounded by rednecks and heavy metal. It was awful (and still kind of is, too lol). I used to sneak my headphones on the bus so I could listen to it every morning on the way to school. I had every word, note and drum beat memorized. I played that tape so much, that one day it wore out and broke. I really love the humor in the songs, but the sound from that record is what I love the most. One of the best sounding punk records ever made, in my opinion (Dean's drums sound so great!!) Still to this day, I haven't heard any other album that sounds like it. Thanks for the great music.... The Dead Milkmen are one of PA's greatest treasures. 🤘

Not only was Big Lizard my intro to the Dead Milkmen, but it was also one of my first "punk rock" cassettes. I was 14 (1987), working at the local Boy Scout camp, and an older counselor took me under his wing and let me dub copies of Big Lizard, 7 Seconds Walk Together, and Sex Pistols. I was hooked on Big Lizard, and y'all quickly became my favorite band. The snotty "f you" attitude, silliness, and sarcasm was just what I wanted. So glad that this album was made, it helped shape my future. Thanks for being a part of my teenage life.

  • @esteeb67

I was born and raised in Boston, but for some reason unknown to me, I went to college in Milwaukee. I worked at the university radio station (WMUR 750 AM) and we used to play Big Lizard (particularly Bitchin' Camaro all the time). You guys showed up at Century Hall (opening for Johnny Thunders) I think in February of 86. You played a few songs off of your next record that night, though I hadn't heard it yet. Two Feet Off The Ground became one of my favorites. I picked up the full album sometime after that and then got Eat Your Paisley when I was back home that summer. Been following you ever since.

I just wanna personally thank you guys for making this album, it was a giant part of my high school years 92-94 and helped me get thru a pretty dark and lonely time in my life. I lived in a Tiny Town full of racists and our sheriff was actually named Bobbie Joe. I discovered Big Lizard and Pure Guava (Ween) thru one of those 10 CDs for a penny mail order things and these two albums were like window to the outside world....I named my first dog Mavis, she was awesome. She once ran into a gas station and stole a bag of chips.

I remember where I was the first time I saw the "Big Lizard" album, in Camelot Music in the Ocean County Mall. It must have been in 9th or 10th grade - I was just starting to buy music and hadn't really discovered punk yet. I was probably there to get something by the Cars or Van Halen, but at the front of the record bin was this "Big Lizard in My Backyard" album, it really drew attention to itself! The artwork and title were so cool, but I had no idea who this was or what it sounded like (no youtube or listening booths in those days kids!) and I only had my hard-earned $8 to spend, so I ended up leaving with whatever I came for. A couple years later my friend brought over "Big Lizard" and I was floored! I practiced guitar along with the tape and soon had all 4 albums (this was when Beelzebubba was new) and never looked back!
Thanks for posting this, I've always been curious about the making of all the Milkmen albums. Someone should write a 33 1/3 type book on this one (or Bucky Fellini, 'bubba, or Paisley!)

Can’t help but consider how inaccessible these tidbits of insight were at the time of this album’s release. Living in a small suburb of Toronto with one record store(in the mall) meant a trip to the city on a commuter train just to find the cassette. I bought it and played it continuously…looking for these tidbits in lyrics or on the cover.
When a freak cassette player malfunction started playing the album backwards…all my questions were answered, I finally knew what the queers are doing to the soil.

Really interesting episode. Absolutely fantastic album and "Dean's Dream" is s great song. Big Lizard was probably the last album I got as it wasn't easily available in the UK. I heard some of the songs on the "Now We Are 10" CD but I got a copy posted to me for free from The Dead Milkmen after writing to them. I still can't believe that a band would send you CDs out of the blue but this isn't your average band. I always used to love watching Number 73 as a kid.

I stumbled on this great album not long after it was released, during a trip (back) to Philadelphia. SInce I had moved to a cultural backwater in terms of music, when I got back to the big city, I spent a lot of time & money in record stores. I recall grabbing a bunch of imports (AC/DC, Motorhead) and some punk stuff. BLIMB was front and centre in the 'bargain bin! I was attracted to the cover, title and name of the band. I liked the Dead Kennedys and wondered if these guys might be similar? (well before internet or file sharing or even alternative radio in my area). So I added it to the pile and took it back home. It was one of my roommates that actually cracked the seal and put it on the turntable. Definitely not like the DK's, but quirky, funny and damned cool! I also liked that they were from Philly. It gained frequent rotation on the stereo and I picked up additional vinyl albums as they came out, then switched to cds. Decades have gone by since then.. Recently I drove an old car that had a tape deck and dug out a cassette with BLIMB. I had almost forgotten what a stellar album it is. On my tape, I had recorded 'backyard' side first and that's how I remember it. I like the intro to Bitchin Camaro as a set up for the rest of the album. That car is gone now (still have the cassette and all the albums) but I'm still wondering about that intro.. how Joe and Rodney (? maybe? can't remember) are talking about heading down to the shore, but who's actually going seems to switch halfway through the conversation! Have a listen if you didn't notice.

  • @hrwise89

Favorite album of all time. Still remember the first time I had put it on. I was probably 11 or 12 and I found a box of cassettes in the attic my oldest brother left behind when he moved out. I'd heard some punk before (like, crappy 90's NOFX vein stuff) and liked that, but right away this was something else to me. I found my fucking people on that cassette. I learned to play all the songs. Got their other albums. Begged my parents to let my older brother take 15 year old me accrosd the country for the first reunion / Dave Blood memorial.
That album changed my life is all, and I've always appreciated it. It taught me that I don't have to be best guitar player or best singer or write the hardest riffs or be the most badassed or the toughest or even coolest. It made me want to be an INTERESTING guitar player with a STYLE who can write just, I dunno. It's hard to put in to words. But it made me realize people like me could make awesome music.

I first heard about Big Lizard in My Backyard in 1988 from a counselor, a junior in high school, in my middle school drug prevention program. He said you shouldn't listen to music like this because, obviously, they are on drugs and will inevitably destroy their lives. So of course I needed to hear this. Turned out an older kid down the street had it on cassette and let me copy it. I bought it on CD years later.

First off, did anyone notice that Dan's shirt almost matches up with Rodney's head? anyways, I first got Big Lizard when I was 16 in 1986, driving around in my 72 LTD blasting it on the tape player on my front seat. I still believe the title song is based on the film "Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World" I was at the infamous Fun,Fun,Fun fest when they open with "Tiny Town" and almost lost my breath screaming the lyrics

I saw The Dead Milkmen back in the early 90s at the "OK Hotel" under the viaduct in Seattle...
I went with my really good friend who worshiped the ground these guys walked on...
Anyways, my buddy went up to get their autographs and they looked at him and were like "and you are?... and we care why?..."...
My buddy was so pissed how egotistical and condescending they were, he went home and tossed all their tapes, shirts, and cds he had in his collection.
And talked shit about them from that day on.
Yep... Watching this... These chodes are WAY too cool for me.

That doesn’t sound like us but, if we did act in that manner, you and your friend have our deepest apologies
