- 808 State is an English electronic music outfit formed in 1988 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the "state of mind" shared by the members. They were formed by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson.
This is their music video Cubik from 1990
In 20 years from now, care workers will be playing tracks like this in care homes to keep the residents happy.
Hard to believe this is 30 years old, wow! Still a banger
Hehehe
We used to skate to this in Chicago in the early 1990's. I think I bought the CD at Waxx Traxx.
The Wax Trax documentary Industrial Accident is great.
@@dwarfsid where can I see this ?
Same!
Mr Gary you ma boy is a legend you went to waxx you a legend my friend
30+ Years later and just blows your mind
2022 and still a kickass super original "banger!!" I heard it on Mars FM back in SoCal. Nothing compares to this today.
Yes!
"We are the music makers.. we are the dreamers of the dreams..."
Great words. 👍
Great album that.
wow. I used to spin this in L.A. back in 90-92. Still love it.
I remember hearing this in 91 and was hooked instantly. Then saw the live with Meat Beat Manifesto it was an awesome show.
I saw that tour. Killer show!
Radio Babylon !!!
MBM always brought the amazing opening acts, shortly after that it was the Communion tour with a Orbital and Ultramarine.
This was so different from the usually techno and trance from that time and so cool.
We used to refer to it as industrial
We used to refer to it as industrial
We used to refer to it as industrial
We used to refer to it as industrial
We used to refer to it as industrial
...jesus christ.
That came out 23 years ago - soon after I was born - and is one of the best things I've ever heard.
What the hell happened in the last two decades.
Now almost 30 years.
Everything turned to crap
lots of great music came out, but y'all are too busy doing boring adult stuff to pay any attention 😑
this still fucks my head up 29 years later.. utterly magnificent
Still fucks my head 31 years later 🙃😊🙃
Same. I'm 47 this yr and this shit still brings me to A Place 🙌🙌💥💥
I vividly remember dancing to this song when I was 20 at the Edge in Palo Alto California so awesome. DJ’s from Live 105 (105.3 in SF) Steve Masters, Big Rick Stewart did live broadcasts on Friday and Saturday night from the Edge was so much fun met my very first girlfriend there as she waited to check her coat into the coat check and I asked her to dance. Fantastic memories.
this lot supported moby in the anson rooms in bristol 1000 years ago..... no one even noticed when moby came on after them.....
I am here because of Björk's interview :)

It's amazing the stuff you can find on those Old Skool albums.
The Dancing Guy in this video is my favorite of all Dancing Guys from several different bands. His moves are classic.
I actually have used the melody to help my daughter practice spelling words, it works for us...
Pity it didnt tell you how to spell 'practice' as a verb.
Used to hear this all the time back then, and at one NYC club especially. Danced next to Ru Paul during Cubik, ha legendary times. In Yer Face sounded amazing in the clubs as well, although it was an “early” tune or the opposite an after hours tune, as in the sun’s about to come up 🖤
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen.
Loved 808 State back in the day as a teenager.
Still think they were brilliant.😊
Defo
haha I remember having this on loop in 1990 and seeing them at the Opera House in Toronto. What a damn show
Omg blast from the past! Playing it takes me right back to 1990 in the club drunk on k cider!
Is k cider a brand, or is it just cider with a dash of special k? Lol
@@fiztaqt2343 yes it is a brand. google it lol
@@lisarose670 sure i coulda just done that but asking you was more amusing 😎
Great music and loved a K Cider. 8‰ too 🤪
This was the opening hit played on Retro Charts Radio this morning. RCR is playing every UK Top 40 Hit (1952-1999) on elimination random from 8am to 11pm every day. Give it a try, you'll probably never hear the same hit twice! It’s a music journey no-one has been on before :) #RippingUpTheRadioRuleBook
Classic!
No animals were hurt in the making of this video, and no guitars were used in the recording.
THE GUITAR IS REAL I WAS IN THERE STUDIO OK.
@@UNITEWAD Wow nice!
there's no way those Madchester kids were using drugs.
+Jason Lieberman 24 hour party people
Perish the thought!
Darren got locked up for selling cocain
Absolutley not!" 👍🍄🗝
@@scotchegg3419 Thank God it wasn't Cocaine.
It's sublime up north.
my introduction into a brilliant new world !!!
I LOVED that guitar solo at the beginning......
I hate that guitar at the beginning.
26 years ago...amazing
Way back when throwing shapes was frowned at.. 2022 rocking the '90s vibe...
Good old Bob State. Cubik was great, but Cobra Bora (Short cut) was the real mind blower at the time for me. My first all nighter was Bob at Brixton Academy.
Loved this track in the early 90s had the 12in single great album too.
1990 probably the year British dance culture took over (not saying it was better than Detroit by any means) but as a whole British rave culture reigned supreme.
Some of the sound used to scare me when I was younger LOL
You’re not the only one. Saw this in the dark, after some ads for child safety and road accidents, lost sleep for a few days!
Now THAT was music, pure n simple. EVERY freakin techno act working today owes something to 808 State. Respect. BTW, youre not going to believe this, but I saw - get this - 808 State, Moby, and Meat Beat Manifesto in a PUB in Sunderland about 1990!! (nicked me dads MG to get there too, hahaha. Those were the heady days). Viva 1988-1992!
Wow! Lucky. Love Meat Beat! Genocide!
Same here at Limelight in 91 Moby & 808 State!
Was insane, Moby introduced GO! Place was going nutz
Still listening in 2022! Quality tune!
2013 and this is still ahead of what we have going on in the states.
I DON'T DO WINE BARS,
NAH I DO 9 BARS.
😀👍
LOL.
Favourite comment of the day and I've barely 'started work'.
Yeahhhhh
I recently heard the album Ninety played by a colleague of mine.
Darn nice musick.
Superb combination of sounds.
I can't believe I saw this on Channel 6 Nightshift in late 2007. It was the only show to play this song in the 21st century. I can't believe they had this video.
Play this with headphones and bass turned on full!!!! Epic
This is what happens when your label wants a music video, but you don't want to do one.
Nah fam, this is what happens when you take acid and get swedged on ecto's before making a music video
Well comparing to today music videos this is pure art
Well, it does what it says in the tin, what more do you want.
Hard to do anything better on low budget, while you still wanted to get on MTV airtime.
This is what happens when your label is ZTT in 1990, before Warner Bros. bought them.
Incredible. Still the track after all these years.
The good old days. I know the party was good when i couldn't remember it the next day
This was one of my top favs back then!!
Music these days is absolute gash 💯👌🏻
Saw them at a concert in 1990. Ahead of their time. Edm music today.
R I P Andy
I played this over and over and over haha 😁. Thanks Terry!
Ha! Saw them do this at London Arena way back! Happy times!
Beginning reminded me of the boss theme from sonic 2 game gear
he makes this clip, should've kept him on as their own Bez :D
Do you mean Bez from the Happy Mondays? 🤔
Top of the pops style music video, where viewers wanted to see musicians play traditional instruments instead of drum machines, synths and samplers.
808 changed my life.
Beats the shit out of any music put out today..
This reminds me of going to LA undergrounds in my youth. Good times.
I sampled this on my Atari STFM using a cartridge called Mastersound. That was in the 90's. I played around for hours and hours with it.
Bought my first series one rs turbo in this year happy dayz
Simplemente una dimensión musical diferente, para gente que se alimenta energéticamente de la buena música ......
Another quality tune terry
Wow I haven't heard this in over 15 years or so! Level 5 in the Adam Hats bldg, Dallas, Texas...
i love it 32 years ago, i love it today, tomorrow and always til i die....
Being 18 in 1990 was wild.
30 years old today!!! Still a chooon
That's right folks, this was an official video to an actual hit single!
Yep working class lads these are ☝👍.no big budget at the time as house was only just expanding into the mainstream
happy 808 day
This track blew my mind and just had to go raving
my childhood music
The last 20 seconds for me in this music video was pure NIGHTMARE FUEL when I first saw on MTV Dance UK at night, no lights on. Thought something went wrong on the telly.
Manchester..the glory years
It's fucking amazing! I love this shit!!!!
For whatever reason, I bought this single before I had heard it nor seen this video...never even heard anything about 808...and I didn't like it at ALL!! I listened to it one time and complained that it sounded too electrical. The second time I listened, I found the sound and now I have had a lovely relationship with techno. My best friend, I use 808 as my password still to this day....
@Crypto World XD
needs more cowbell.
A old bjork interview from 2006 brought me here
Just ordinary working class lads having fun
I used to dance like that. In fact is still do. :)
Totally abstract ending!
Mos Def in my Top 5 EDM songs of all time!!!!
This track has aged well ❤️
“Are You Ready for some super Dynamite Soul?” LOL. 🎵🎵🎵🎧🎧🎧😎😎😎😍😍😍
im so glad they didn't VEVO this. I love the remix even better.
Cant remember how many times i lost it to this with the aid of a couple of M25s. Brings back all the memories of the Kool Kat in Nottingham! MAD
this is like Teletubbies for adults
Bsjy Eaz
Most definitely....😂
And that's a bad thing, why?!
tune, simple and great xxxxxxxx
One of my faves❣
RIP ANDREW NEVER FORGOTTEN❤
Quality don't sound old ! Class
Reading through these comments, honestly never appreciated how popular they were in the US.
I think it refers to the Roland TR 808 drumcomputer. (Classic early house drum computers BTW worth a fortune now!)
Blackburn 1990. The year I discovered I could dance...still can.
..at last..I've learnt something... Great!
+Vincent Lajoie ... also played tapes... obviously... as I did on those years...
I always think of 808 state when the time reads 8:08
I used to bump this shit back in the day!!!
What a FFFFin BOMB!
The r/OldElectronicMusic subreddit brought me here!
I was in Fan Francisco dancin my bum of to this in 1991
