    Communicating underwater is challenging. Light and odors don’t travel well, but sound moves about four times faster in water than in air - which means marine mammals often use sounds to communicate. The most famous of these underwater vocalizations is undoubtedly the whale song. Stephanie Sardelis decodes the evocative melodies composed by the world’s largest mammals.

      I read in a fact book recently that a scientist had switched from analyzing land animals to whales decades ago. He was looking for a way to help save the whales. Then, one day, he met someone who said, "You know those whales sing, right?" The scientist had no idea, so the guy let him listen to some recordings. Long story short, the scientist decided to record their songs and release the songs to the public in order to encourage people to protect the whales.

    How can one species- humans- manage to become the villains in almost every story?

    • @biezarre
      @biezarre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      because we are too greedy and so entitled to assume that humans are the most powerful, hence we can occupy it and use the mother nature as much as we want without thinking that other species aren't less important.

    • @mrreyes5004
      @mrreyes5004 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Because we're the heroes of our own story - lowly tree-climbing beasts who advanced to overtake every top predator who once fed on us and spreading across the globe. No longer do giant birds eat hominids, it is hominids who take down large birds with the press of a trigger. No longer do big cats prey on humans, now big cats have to be saved _by_ humans _from_ other humans. No longer do fearsome sea creatures take down boats, it is boats who rake in fearsome sea creatures and turn them into fresh meals for more humans.
      It's easy to forget, but there was a time when lions, bears, sharks, hyenas, birds of prey and other now-endangered species were the "bad guys". The world was once our enemy... and, whether or not we admit it, an instinctive part that's stayed with us for millions of years has made sure we have *_not_* forgotten that.

      MrReyes 500 you write all this to make a point but it defeats your point at the same time. With our dominance and intelligence we should have been able to prevent this, we depend on the balance they bring. What animals do is survive not mass killing for decoration and sports. We are wasted intelligence. The world wasn’t our enemy, the world was every living beings enemy, we just decided to make it personal to feel better about ourselves. We are no damn Heroes.

      The geometric shapes as semi abstract conventional symbols were a nice touch instead of simple music 🎵 notes. Seemed to bring the discussion of the cognition and personality of large complex thinking of an animal. It even brings up the idea of what intelligence and sentience as a biological premise in difference from regular person with simple common sense of it's a blue whale and I'm a human being. To actually be able to discuss is a crazy way even including the extreme amount of actual backed data as an abstract reference of conventional thought and data. Makes an excellent argument and a fantastic way to better an understanding of the planet with physical and engineering applications as in technology and biological systems.

    This has nothing really to do with the video topic, but I like how the animator represent multiple types of sounds with different shapes, patterns or forms. Visualizing sound is hard, but this catched me off guard because most matched how I do it.

    Knowing what happens in Canada and any other cold sea water places with companies looking for oil makes me sad.

    I didn't even know from where they vocalize, such amazing creatures to be able to develop language like that, isn't a proof of higher intelligence that they can learn all these themes and adept their songs after living togueter with members that had different song sequences?, like me learning a new language?
