  • Dragons are the poster boys of DnD, warlocks are one of the most iconic D&D classes, so what if we combine warlocks and dragons together into it's own new thing?
    Go check out Delve, a Guide to Dungeons!: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
    Delve has basically EVERYTHING you could ever need for all your dungeon needs, from 10+ plug-and-play dungeons as well as a dungeon design toolbox to help you make your own, to 40+ new magic items, 40+ new monsters, 40+ traps, and all sorts of player options like subclasses, feats, and species! Honestly, the concept of basing Warden Dragon off of animals has grown on me, so I think I'll propose some animal ideas for the other classes:
    Artificer: Termite (I imagine their hoard being like a city of some kind based around advancement. Also maybe monster hunter Ahtal-Ka vibes with the dragon possibly having its hoard build a dragon-shaped mech around its body, which is smaller compared to other dragons)
    Barbarian: Bear or Bull (I think that makes enough sense.)
    Bard: Maybe a Lyrebird or Peacock? (I like the thought of them being all flashy and extravagant, with their hoards being like secret societies)
    Cleric: Dove (White doves specifically to embody an angelic aspect of gods)
    Druid: Elk (antler headwear is a staple among druids and primal peoples. Also they'd totally take in anyone lost in the woods like a mysterious forest spirit)
    Fighter: Wolf (was already mentioned in the OG video so it goes without saying lol)
    Monk: Monkey (Journey to the west. They totally have temples devoted to enlightenment).
    Paladin: Eagle (It just felt right, and I couldn't think of anything else)
    Ranger: Viper (Quick fast strikes, nature)
    Rogue: Rat (Sneaky, underground city type beats)

    • @Croutonium

    LOVE the design for the Patron Dragon but it feels a BIT too close to the Brainstealer Dragon which is a dragon that has been injected with Mindflayer Tadpoles and underwent Ceremorphosis. And like the Patron Dragons there are very tentacle-y, squidy, octopus faced dragons.
    But I suppose that COULD be used as a plot point. Maybe a Mindflayer Colony is using the resemblance to lure victims into their lairs. Or maybe someone mistook a Patron Dragon for a Brainstealer and send your party on a quest to slay it?

    • @Croutonium
      @Croutonium หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I had the same thought about Brainstealers, but I'm thinking it was probably just out of not knowing about it, rather than copying. They're more a niche dragon AFAIK, especially for someone who constantly states his distaste for dragons lol.

    I love the idea of combining the Guild Master and Patron roles. I can practically see the story in my mind's eye. A great kingdom falls under the threat of some external foe and when all seems lost, people with supernatural power begin to arise from the masses, calling themselves adventurers and forming a guild, saving the kingdom. In return, the GM, a dragon in disguise, makes a deal with the king, slowly subverting power from within. Before the king knows it, he is little more than a figurehead with the Guild being the real authority in the nation, hostage to its one-time saviors.

    Honestly silver dragons smelling like rain is such a good way to give a little bit of exposure to players.
    When you say something smells like rain you can immediately image the sensation and you will easily connect it with the particular dragon.
    It's the difference between describing entering the dungeon and saying the slabs have moss on them and saying "the place smells of damp, mossy stone". It's like it teleports you there with your eyes closed.

    This was interesting, but I totally fell into it because I thought, from the outset, that it was how to make a Dragon as a Patron, which is something I have wanted for three years, which it eventually does, and almost as much as i have longed for a Clockwork Patron, so I can have some gunslinger warlock who received their firearm from Mechanus, and serves some powerful Modron, or even Primus, or some forgotten LE Rogue Automaton. Hell, now I might have to keep an eye out for Artificer + Dragon, because a dragon that actually MAKES something, and that then might be useful to others, despite their typical hoarding habits, could be great! Nice video!

    An excellent premise. I had my own notion of how to do dragons following a theme of "power". Assuming a homebrew setting where the chromatics, metallics, and all that jazz doesn't exist, a dragon starts off with a mote of power. As it grows, it develops and obsession for a particular thing that gives them 'power' and they make a horde that way. This can be anything: knowledge, wealth, loyalty, divinity, even something more nebulous like reputation. They grow in size as they accrue 'power', and usually stick to one type over others but can frequently get multiple. Their physical characteristics are dependent on what they value and collect the most of and usually this further entrenches their obsession. For instance, not all of them can fly, and not all of them look like lizards, much like your own dragons, but as they grow older, they need to accrue more and more of their power until they can't anymore, after which they lay a clutch of eggs, endowing it with some of their original power, before rapidly declining in health and dying... assuming they don't have contingencies. Often a dying dragon won't go quietly and becomes *everyone's problem*, just as a growing dragon seeks out more and more sources of power to feed itself. They essentially become 'power elementals'.

    Honestly, I get his Frustration at how "All Dragons have the same stat blocks"... But that's really mostly just a 5E Problem, and it applied to basically ALL the Monsters, not just Dragons, they really Messed up when they Oversimplified the Monster Manual for 5E... In 3.5E/PF1 Each Dragon Type DID actually have Unique Identifiable Traits. Like Silvers Could Solidify Clouds and Fog to just Step on it if they wanted and they can see though it as if it wasn't there (Some of them even make their Lairs on Clouds), They Had a Flight Maneuverability that was one step Higher than other Dragons their Size(And it's a 5 Point Scale so 1 is a lot), They had a Cold Aura, and their Scales REFLECTED Spells that failed to Bypass their Spell Resistance Right back at the caster... And that's on top of the Fact that they can Cast Spells like a Sorcerer with a level based on their age Category same as all Dragons Can (Pick a Spell Known List to match what you want them to do).
    Also, about the Patron Dragon itself... Neat Concept Thematically, Mechanically even... But ALL of my NOPE to it's Appearance, this is a DRAGON, not a Gods damn Eldritch Abomination/Great Old one POSING as a Dragon! Just NOPE on the Octopus/Eel Look... If you want it to Fit with the Concept of Making Deals and having Smaller beings Serving it, You can Make it a Shark(It's Servants Filling in to Remoras, those Little Fish that swim around Sharks to clean them), or a Wolf and/or Raven (With the Servants filling the Natural role of the other), Or a Crocodile and it's Plover... Look there were WAY Better Options that weren't just "Dragon Cthulhu" ok? We Already have a "Great Old One" Patron for Warlocks, we don't Need another one that's pretending to be a Dragon on top of that. It's Redundant and Frankly Unoriginal, it amounts to saying that ALL Warlocks Must Exclusively be Lovecraft and Demon themed...
    Also, Also... I have to say, the concept of a "Prince" is neat and all... But it's also REALLY Stupid... If the Dragon can only have ONE Successor, and it Ceases to be a Dragon when it Passes along it's Essence... How does the Species Survive? if one of them Gets Killed, that's it, One Less of them in the world and there is NO way for them to replenish their Numbers. If there were a 1000 of them at the start of the world, and one gets Killed every few Years, then eventually they'll go Extinct despite having done Literally nothing wrong, simply because they have no means to actually Reproduce, only "reincarnate" and even then only though HYPER Specific Rituals... If Someone Prevents that Ritual, Prevents the Dragon from Choosing a Prince/Successor long enough, then that Dragon Dies and that's it, one less in the world, which WILL Inevitably Happen, OFTEN, Especially if the Dragon has Rivalries with other Dragons... You just Created a Species that is Doomed to Extinction no Matter what... That does NOT Fit with the Model of a creature that SHOULD be Superior to any other Material Being...

    To me AD&D 2nd Ed, particularly the Councle of Wyrms box set, made the different dragons feel different. One reason is back in that edition of D&D flying characters had a fly level ranked from A to E. I think it was A could basically hover like a hummingbird but E had to constantly keep forward momentum at least at half speed. It also affected how well they could turn. A and B could turn on a dime, E turned in giant curves while C and D could turn faster but not easily.
    It was a lot of work that was normally ignored by all players/DMs unless you were very specifically having an aerial fight like dragon vs dragon. The really good fliers could mess up the crappy fliers.
    There where some other things that made them feel kind of different as well but I focused on that due to your comments about flying.

    • @marykateharmon
      @marykateharmon หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Pride is easy. They view themselves as above everyone else and so take on a form that's as powerful as they view themselves to be then remain isolated from others because none others are worth their time unless they need them. Honestly, along with greed, I consider this sin a core archetypical sin of dragons.
      Lustful can also work in a similar way to gluttonous and be a main reason why they want princesses, though their lust-filled hunger may or may not have turned into more of a literal hunger. They certainly now would have the stamina for it.
      Slothful, well most dragons sleep then raid a village to eat then go back to sleeping. Someone so slothful that they only view others as bothers or resources in order to not need to do any work could then work as a dragon.
      Envious honestly is the hard one. Best way I could see it working would be envious of other dragons' hoards and powers and/or envious of kings' or other nobles' treasures and covets them for themselves, and so becomes a dragon in its desire. This dragon would likely be the most outgoing and active of them all because there would always be someone new to be envious of, someone more powerful or more wealthy or just with things they don't have but desire.

While some foster communities of inventors, others construct whole armies of warforged trying to artificially raise their own strength. Make their design based on rodents like rats or beavers to match their weak but industrial vibes

    • @intergalactic92
      @intergalactic92 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Polite reminder that artificers are about enchantments as much as they are about inventions. Whilst they were created for the steampunk setting they can function in your typical high magic world. They do have an entire subclass dedicated to potion making and there isn’t any mechanical reason the artillerist has to have a mechanical cannon, it could be a familiar which happens to be able to breathe fire. The steel defender could be an enchanted tree that follows you around. Etc.
      Although, I do find the idea of a dragon that is as small as a salamander, building a mechanical dragon body to appear as large as traditional dragons to be highly amusing. I can see the party fighting mecha-Godzilla, and upon its defeat a tiny dragon crawls out for round two (or more likely run away in fear).

    Pretty sure nothing actually stopped dragons from having classes before, some just already had innate spellcasting, theyve always been able to be druids, wizards, or whatever, there's dragons that have had classes that werent casters, like rogues, as in canon ones.

      I don't like the species angle personally, and furthermore their lack of reproduction. It makes them feel even more like alien outsiders to reality than parts of it. But these videos are a good exercise in developing dragon culture and how it might interact with the world. For example, I take these guys as dragons who highly value promises and symbols of such, even if they aren't the targets. It is a mark of honor and personal satisfaction to oversee the forging of alliances and completion of deals. Your word is your bond, literally. And warlocks are business associates who expect some form of return on investment of power. They're very driven in pursuing their idea of advancement and positive change in the world, and exercise their will through their beneficiaries.

    • @ThePa1riot
      @ThePa1riot หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure but the Warden Dragons are specifically themed around the classes which makes their class identity stand out much more than if a dragon just cast a Druid spell.

    I heard from a dnd TH-camr that once a patron gives power, they can't take it away. This is because the power a patron gives is more akin to knowledge than superpowers. So, the patron dragon being able to take away a warlocks power is probably a somewhat unique ability of theirs, kind of like taking knowledge from out of your head. And because the patron dragon lose some of themselves when they give power, it can be seen as the patron dragon being made of knowledge, which is maybe how they are able to take the knowledge away, since that knowledge is their body. And if all of this is true, perhaps as the power and knowledge given to a warlock grows, in some way, the patron dragons' body, knowledge, and power also grows. So when a patron dragon takes their power back, they gain more power knowledge and body mass. And if a patron dragon takes back all their power they gave all once it can result in a temporary super state where they're like twice as big. Maybe it's temporary because in taking all their knowledge back too fast they also takes all the knowledge of the warlock so they has to purge all of it afterwards before their soul gets polluted by memories and identities not their own.

    • @ThePa1riot
      @ThePa1riot หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That all sounds very true to the Warlock’s class identity. What with the emphasis on occult lore and “secrets mortals were not meant to know,” as opposed to the Wizard’s more academic “peer reviewed” stance on magical knowledge.
      Not that Wizard’s are strangers to keeping secrets but the knowledge being kept usually isn’t hazardous itself as much as what it could do in the wrong hands.
      Plus the idea that the Patron can make a Warlock “un-know” something simply because it wishes to is very Warlock and disturbing. Add on to your idea of the knowledge taken back from the Warlock to the Dragon can muddle its mind with traces of different identities could make it go mad if it wasn’t already.
      A dragon with a mind both ancient and fragmented? Perfect Warlock Patron!

    Much like pointy hat, I too don’t like how Mary Sue-ish all the metallic dragons seem to be in DnD, so I too make them more akin to rose quartz where they “like people” but don’t necessarily “respect them” kinda like how she was with Greg in that one scene where she says, “I love humans, you’re all so funny.” In my opinion, it’s the best way to keep them as “good guys” while also keeping that Dragon pride that they are known for.

    I love the concept, but I’m not too crazy about the squid dragon look. Especially since we already have a big tentacle dragon monster (I think it’s called a brainstealer?). Maybe an alternative look could be some sort of spider-headed dragon.
    Like imagine a normal dragon with eight beady eyes and two scaled mandibles coming from the corners of its mouth. And maybe with eight legs too. I just think it’d look more unique and still be on brand with the whole ensnaring warlocks thing.

    Here's where my mind went during this video. You could interact with members of the dragon cult that have different levels of Warlock each time you meet them (like the same character). Party helps them, they are significantly more powerful, party defeats them without killing them, they are level 1 or have no more powers. As you are battling the dragon, it returns it's power to itself, making it stronger but the cult members also in the battle are significantly weakened.

    You glossed over their lair regional effects. A few of their older edition abilities had been moved there and altered for the worse ( my subjective opinion). With 5e they gain these when they establish a lair of their own.
    Earlier edition silver dragons could use an effect identical to the control weather spell once a day (ancient or older), wherever they wanted. Now once a day they can do the same for a twelve mile diameter, centered on their lair but can do it from anywhere and don't need to be outside to do it.
    Their old twice a day feather fall has become a permanent passive wind induced effect similar to feather fall (juvenile and older). It works for all non-evil creatures that didn't fall from actions caused by the dragon and its allies. This gives a reason to build cities near the dragons lair but also enables a alignment police state scenario or allows a corrupt ally of the dragon to murder via fall damage when their victim would normally be saved by the effect.
    The silver dragons used to have the ability to walk, sit, rest, and ride on clouds with the cloudwalking ability. Combined with the at will fog cloud and control winds they got when older, this would add to their air of mystique. Now over a few days or longer, they can make clouds and fog as solid as stone within their lair. This could be used for anchored floating platforms, sculptures, and supports. Additional sources imply using this ability to extend their lairs into cloud only sections reaching out into the sky. This alteration allows anyone to interact with and utilize the cloud constructs, where the older versions allowed them private access to safe havens in the sky.
    P.S. The standard rules allow the DM to make dragons immersive and interesting but their stat blocks don't really lean into this and require the DM to flesh them out like their many other NPCs. In general the stat block is meant to be the common ground that they have with others of their kind, but they were always meant to be individuals sculpted by the DM and to be more than the mere generic monsters. The sad thing is their stat block already has so much involved that it can be intimidating to try adding flavor, personality, and alterations to suit the added characterization.

    • @Lilith_Harbinger
      @Lilith_Harbinger หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don't agree with the last point. The stat blocks in 5e are very disappointing for many monsters, and claiming that they are standardized to allow the DM to make them unique is basically leaving the majority of the work for the DM. Personality and connections to the story are not things the monster guide can determine for you, but interesting stat blocks are exactly what it's supposed to do and what it fails at doing.
