    Never done it myself but I had it done a few years ago at a shop. Figured I’d save myself some money and do it at home. This was the best video on youtube for this. No more leaks from there and replaced the oem cover with a dorman one. Looks way better and not sure if that was part of the cause of the leak as some of the metal looked sort of bent. Used 75w-90 valvoline synthetic. But 2 qtz of it but it leaked some of it out.

    This video helped huge. The fluid in my transfer case was green… no idea what it was.

    A heads up: the Borg Warner 4472 transfer case (1990-1998) requires Dexron III ATF, while the NV136 (1999-2005) requires Autotrak II. I am not an expert but this seems to be because the BW4472 is all time AWD and more akin to a gearbox, while the NV136 is electronically controlled AWD , utilizing clutch packs, and Autotrak II has a friction modifier in it for the viscous clutch set up.

    Great info, thanks for the update. We're full timing in a 2001 AWD Astro conversion and can definitely use some new fluids

    This is the best video for doing these fluid changes. I've done two of them today (not enough time for the rear diff) and this video has been quite helpful. Great job!

    Great video just did my 2004 awd astro gear oils and she's smooth as butter. The wheels were binding and going clunk clunk on tight turns before I changed the gear oils. Thanks for the great video.

      Same here. Thought it was transmission. Fluid was black this could be the cause but haven’t had a lift to put it up on. Shifted great then went to pull in to grab launch and a hard left turn caused it to bind. Then when I pulled into work it wouldn’t move in reverse. Towed it backwards so I could put it in drive and suddenly it would go in reverse again

    I'm not a mechanical pro so bear with me. Is it not dangerous to open up the rear diff and just start sanding with power tools? My first thought was that any debris that lands in the diff case could be disastrous over time. Is this an overly paranoid stance? Thanks, and cool vid.

      Diffs have rather large tolerances so minute particles will not really phase them. Plus anything that comes from that surface will likely be gasket material which is soft and will not wear against the hardened ring and pinion. They end up with metal shavings in them over time from wear and do not have any kind of filter. I wouldn't be worried about it.

      Its best to stuff the housing with clean lint free rags so debris does not get inside. Only when you are ready to re-install the cover would you remove the rags carefully so not to get grit or debris inside the housing.

    What if your transfer case is leaking. Mine does have the pink/red fluid in it. I can switch out drive a 100 miles and maybe the other fluid is thicker or whatever and may not leak

    How do you feel about servicing the transmission?

  • @1311182244
    @1311182244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had my 2002 Astro AWD since 2008 and never changed out any of this, although I did get a new transmission in 2014. Now it is acting like I'm running over small bumps in the road when there aren't any, especially at speeds below 30mph and after it's well warmed up. One person told me he thinks it's the transfer case. Can simply changing out all these fluids stop this?

    Another damn “with simple hand tools” video that doesn’t give the specs on the tools used 🙄
