I am very happy with the update. I have been a Nikon shooter for over 20 years and have always been impressed with their dedication to the photographer.
i liked your wonderful video - Die hard nikon fans who were feeling let down for a few years are well & truly thrilled with the Z8 & Z9 and all the new firmware updates . The bird detection mode is amazing ( i used it on Z9) . More importantly glass like the 400 2.8 , 600 PF etc have given Nikon a definite edge espy in wildlife photography. However there is one feature which i think could be added through a firmware update & will really help in landscape / candid / city scapes etc - feature required is as follows : Display the overblown highlights as zebra stripes in the viewfinder / lcd even as we adjust the exposure - this will be a killer feature .Sony has this & many pros swear by this feature . What is surprising is that this is available in Video mode in the Z8/9 , why can't this be enabled for stills? It will save a lot of time in terms of shooting pics with the right exposures . I have written this many times to nikon but to no avail. Can you also reach out to nikon & - help in getting this feature incorporated in the next update .
lovely review - subbed. Pre-capture in RAW is more about the bandwidth control as i understood from their overview, search would be a great idea going forwards, even if its just in the shortcut list so you can find the menu number its on. I guess its all about customer requests, the more ask the more they will move to try it out i guess. Ive seen others say about pre-capture Raw and search so hopefully they are listening to users requests. just happy to be getting updates like this , it adds value as a customer.
Great video explaining most critical features and love this camera too but love the Zf more😀. Gone are the days when I was manually focusing my Nikon FE and FM and manual exposure. We had three things to work on, Focus, Exposure and Composition. Now we are holding a complex computer in our hand and expect it to do everything for us. Don't get me wrong I love my new Nikon cameras, I am only comparing them to what I have used over the years and all I can say is that I was having a lot more fun and satisfaction doing photography then than now, just what I experienced and it is subjective. Cheers
Understand. I also have film cameras I like to shoot with as it removes all this tech and I focus on other things. I hope with all the tech we have now that camera companies will find a way to simplify it for us. I don’t want a camera doing everything for me but allowing me the option to find the settings I need most without searching on the internet as that takes me away from the photography.
Honestly I love your way of explaining things. More so I am a Z8 user and I have been using nikon since the film Era. That "search" update wld be a huge improvement. Thanks for the update
The missing feature suggestion is excellent. For a decade, I've changed the folder name for each photo event/session, and I reset the number for the new folder. Those two are at the top of the "My Menu" settings. I couldn't find the setting to reset the number, and when I asked a Nikon rep they couldn't find it either. They got back to me a few minutes later with the answer, because making a new folder is in the shooting menu but resetting the number is d8 in the custom settings menu. If I could have searched for "reset", it would have popped up as one of the results. [If I had look at the My Menu in any of the other cameras, I would have seen that I needed d8, but I would have had to stop being frustrated to think of doing that. 😂] The feature I would like added to the Z8/Z9 from the Zf is to have tracking work with manual focus lenses. I use 100% or 200% zoom to help focus, and if eye tracking would have the focus point move to the eye while zoomed, it would be incredible.
Indeed. This is a growing community. I believe due to the past few years where we were limited in where we could go, birding grew quite a bit. It’s addictive haha. Always trying to get that one series of shots etc
Search...YES. A brilliant and very logical idea. I've spent so much time looking for a particular feature. If the camera sits for a while you get stale regarding the menu locations of certain features. And as you said, even Pros often use only a fraction of available features and they're working with a camera all the time. I'm a Lumix G9ii/G9 user. Great menus. But, there are times when the camera sits for a while, life gets in the way, and then I feel like I'm learning certain aspects all over again. A search algorithm doesn't seem too complex or computationaly demanding for many recent camera processors. Let's hope it comes in Firmware upates no matter what camera you're using. By the way, I've always loved Nikon. Still have my F3 HP in the drawer but film just isn't going to happen. But maybe a Z6iii or Z8 will. :)
Nikon is the best bang for buck in everyway for any sort of photographers, from professional to enthusiasts. Best build quality, best firmwares (unlike Fuji or Leica with their horrible freeze problems), fantastic lenses and the best user experience.
And don’t forget the Z6ii and Z7ii many of the features you mention here are in their firmware upgrades. Nikon earn the loyalty of their customers through both firmware and for example the sensor on the Z7ii may be at least as good as the Z8 and great say, for landscapes.
The feature I would love saving the banks so once you set them up they are not modified unless you turn the feature on. Also saving the menu banks into an internal memory so when the mem cards are formatted they are not lost.
Thank you great wrap up, agree with that. What's your opinion of this: astro tracking and auto panning (video/time lapses)? The hardware could allready full fill both since it can perform pixel shift and VR. GPS is actually not needed, the coordinates can be obtained by phone or dialed in manually . - Without a tracker one get exposures of about 8 sec with a 35 mm lens, with an in built tracker 120 seconds is feasible for the VR-system maybe 180 sec. So one can use lower ISO / reach better S/N ratios and capture fainter stuff. - Another thing I think it can be used for auto-panning as well for the longer focal lengths while filming or making time lapses. 2 degrees tilting and/or panning by shifting the sensor is a lot when you use s focal length longer than 135 mm. - Would be an stand out option from the rest of the bunch. Saves you from lugging 2 kg of extra equipment in the mountains.
Thanks for watching. To be honest I don’t really do astrophotography much to comment on this. But I do feel there should be more tools for astrophotographers in the future.
This is a great video. Nikon has done a great thing with this firmware upgrade. I think the search function would work but it's a great idea to learn our camera. I think Nikon did a great job with providing options to customized and save the most used settings. We can also use the Banks to do this as well.
I think it's awesome. In the past you wouldn't get an update like this. Your have to wait until the next version of that camera came out. Nikon is nearly giving us a new camera with just a firmware update for free. I've already tried the bird detection and it's much better than the previous animal detection. There's things in the update that I may use but some people will. I'm not sure if my computer than handle a large file that the pixel shift gives you. I focus stack and blend exposures all the time which creates a larger file. But that was with my 24 mp z6 II. I haven't tried that with my z8 yet. I have 32 gb of ram in my computer but I think I need to upgrade my processor and maybe the graphics card. But I'm willing to try it once just to see. I haven't tried the recapture yet or the auto capture. It may be 3 more years before a z8 II comes out but if they keep giving us updates I may not need another camera. I think the next z8 may have a global shutter.
Agreed, search would be a nice feature for any camera. I always have a copy of the user's manual PDF on my smartphone as a workaround but sometimes I feel it would be much easier if a feature can bring me a list of settings directly by searching on the camera indeed. Canon allows to have personal slides of menu settings (allowing you to group settings with your own priorities), would be at least great to have this also on Zs...On the other hand, this Z8 has so many ways of configuring buttons that I hardly see any limitation. Maybe another feature would be great - and Thom Hogan wrote about it - is to have the ability to name saved settings files and recall them by name. (i.e. Telezooms.bin or Standard.bin etc. for instance to have a set of settings for each type of lens attached to the body).
I think it may be different. According to Nikon, this is a new feature for firmware 2.0 for the Z8. Yes Bird detect is arguably at the top now right with Sony’s a9III
@@btonelli I'll have a look when I next get it out. But from day 1 I have had FN2 set to cycle mode with back dial and area with front. This is instead of the button on the front side of the camera that is dedicated for this. I would love to shoot with the a9iii and also that new 300mm 2.8 looks amazing.
You surprised me with “search” as the missing. But it’s a good one. My vote for #1 missing thing is adding shooting mode (single, continuous, etc) to the bank settings. It’s dumb that you have to separately change that.
I like the way you presented & explain the settings. I do have one thing I think Nikon needs to do is related to Pre-Release Burst. I don't use it because I want RAW images NOT jpg. I understand it takes more memory. I would be happy if they dropped it to a 1/2 or 1/4 second max with only 10 seconds of half-press because you had to release and re-half-press.
is there a difference in results on pixel shift stacking between the NX Studio and something like PS for stacking or did you use some other software I'm not acquainted with ?
How would the budget Nikon 180-600 perform in the AF department on the Z8? Can it match up with the fixed focal length 600/6.3? Or will the inferior 180-600 STM motor miss a lot, a lot of shots? Thanks
Bobby ,I am going to a Safari in two weeks ,i have a Z9 with the 400mm f 2.8 and i need a another body and lens for closer up,i was thinking of the Z8 with the Tamron 35-150....what do you think?
Nothing to add. I have purchased Z8 1 week ago with 1.1 firmware, the birds tracking was at the level of Canon R5 (which I used to use for last 3 years), after 2.0 firmware was introduced, I have to admit that Ninon Z8 rules! I can use only one AF button and it always grab the bird's eye. Even in flight. No issue at all.
@@btonelli 12-bit raw is what I love the most from Z9. Nikon should take their time for making the Mark II. NiKon Z9 will still the best for few more years. Imagine if the Mark II have 16-bit N-Raw + Global Shutter + 16 stops + 8k 120fps it'll be a cakewalk as the best mirrorless camera of all time 😆
Vocal search since there is a mic, ask for best settings, best portrait configuration or sport .... and it implement it in a dedicated AI bank so you can try it immediatly
@@btonelli I wanna talk to my body to activate flicker, to change clipping levels or deactivate IBIS. All these buttons are great, 46 items displayed on EVF too, hard to visual and muscle memory all
Crazy question for the NIKON development team: Is it possible to combine Pixel shift and focus shift together? Imagine you have 32 exposures to get 180 MP and additionally with 300 shots. OK, the CF-Express card could explode :)
Great video. Now I'm really excited to get out and try the new update features. On your last point, in a perfect world a search feature like you describe would be helpful but on such a small screen with my big fingers I think it would slow things down rather than speed things up. Cheers!
Left Nikon last year for OM Systems OM1, now I am getting screwed like you decribed (coming with a firmware update for the OM1 mark 1 in the form of a mark 2 after only 1.5 year that actually only brings 2 rubberized scroll wheels and a bigger buffer). Makes me realy think of going back to Nikon (as soon as they come with a new, gast apsc Z-camera). Your idea for pre-capture about double pressing is brilliant.
Yeah this update really upset a lot of OM owners. Hopefully Nikon comes out with a solid offering for the APS-C users. However another option is going higher megapixel and just causing the APS-C crop inside
Bobby, Did they bring manual focus eye assist from the Zf to the Nikon z8 in this FW update. I know sometimes they give stuff and don’t even mention it. I’m a z8 user but hanging onto current firmware for a week or so in case there are any bugs. Great content. Kind regards, RT
While I agree with most of the feedback on Sony’s lack luster firmware updates I still got a great camera two years in advance of a competitive product from Nikon and even though I bought a Z9 I did not get a smaller, easier to travel with stacked sensor body till the Z8 and that’s still not that small. Only now are we getting any competitor with. 50 Mpixel sensor that can do 30 fps in RAW. I’ve had that since early in 2021.
Not discrediting Sony in any way. I have used their cameras and enjoy the performance and technology behind them. However they do seem to alleviate features for pro users that would be beneficial for less expensive consumer cameras and some of those features could be given in firmware updates.
@@btonelli Agreed. Then again all the resources Sony dedicates to sensor development that Nikon benefits from might need to increase its pricing to pay for firmware development. Currently I own both Sony and Canon products to benefit from both but maybe I should swap it Canon and try Nikon again.
Great video, thanks, but I don't agree with you regarding the ONE feature missing from the Z8 (&Z9). For me the one more upgrade i want is Pre-Capture in RAW, not JPEG. I don't need the 60fps or 120fps Pre-Capture, the 30fps is fine but RAW is essential. Olympus have been doing it with their OM-1s so, come on Nikon, give us this one important upgrade.
Thanks so much. Great job! I am still struggling to get the viewfinder to switch to monitor. Even though chosen in camera or on the side of the view finder. Not working. All I get is exposure info. No screen previews at all.
Hi my friend What about the Manual focusing assistance of the Zf, following the eye even in manual focus mode? Did they implement this in the Z8 This feature will make my choice between the 2 cameras Thanks in advance
@@btonelli thanks !🙏 this feature is really unique and I really see the interest of it. When I grab my Otus 55mm 1.4 on my D6 I struggle keeping the point of focus on the eye while I’m checking the green spot on the bottom on the screen ! Zf would be a revelation to me!
Which is why I feel the UI should be more like Android. Not a full on phone experience, but adding features like search and keyboard. Being a UI designer I feel all these manufacturers miss on this and I’m not exactly sure why.
Try to shoot in cold dark environment on windy iceland. You put your z-on tripod, switch it on and now you need to setup shoot delay to 10seconds (for any reason). You shot. Now you want to move 100 meters further in snow to get more beautifull picture. You turn off camera, moves through snow couple minutes, mount tripod in snow (it is not simple to get firm legs in deep snow) - turn on camera and.... you need again setup shoot delay because it reset... No one sony/canon or etc did not reset this option...It is the horrible in nikon. Can it be fixed?
Video appreciated! Three questions: 1. A Nikon issue that can be rather easily addressed via firmware and which is VERY serious, as far as I am concerned, but which I am not aware of being mentioned as much as it should: Nikon, as far as I know, does not [and never did] offer an option to correct photo orientation in camera and if 3rd party [software] is thus employed weird things happen to the photo files [JPG’s and NEF’s], which prevent them from being fully recognizable/manageable/editable by the very same camera that took them. Many other manufacturers [Canon, Olympus/OM System, Panasonic, Sony - I am not aware about any others] offer this option in camera, why not Nikon - do they seriously believe their cameras to be immune to being fooled when they are turned directly up- or downwards?! Orientation errors do happen, both ways, all the time and it would be sensible to have such errors corrected in camera with a few clicks [or taps] AND have the option to further edit/process those photos in camera! Does the Z 8 offer this option, then? 2. Has the Z 8 done away - already! - with Nikon’s ridiculous photo files 8.3 naming scheme - or at least is it using one more number instead of an underscore in the filenames - also with creating a new folder every 1000 [2000 if shooting RAW+JPEG] photos?! 3. Does the Z 8 offer a way to QUICKLY recall custom shooting parameter settings, like say the Z 6 II [U1, U2, U3] does, thus avoiding missing the shot while fumbling with the menus?
Hi. With the recent firmware update you have auto image rotation in the playback menu. Photo naming can be edited to your preference. Yes Nikon has shooting banks that can recall settings by selecting the bank you programmed your respective settings into. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching
@@btonelli Thank you for replying, however you do not answer my questions: 1. I am talking about photo orientation *_correction_* , not correct display of already badly oriented photos 2. also *_longer_* filenames, not limited customization of fixed length filenames neither unjustifiably limited amount of photo files in a folder 3. finally I am talking about *_QUICK_* shooting parameter set recall - like, for instance, is the case with the Z 6 II - thus not missing the shot.
Yes I tried it, unless I'm doing something wrong its the same as the last firmware, when you are zoomed in in still mode, try panning and see how much it blurs the image, its just not updating at 60 fps. when you zoom out its displaying again smoothly. @@btonelli
Hi there I was wondering why Nikon stop updating firmware for the DSLR? They could be kind to their customer base using recent DSLR with recent Xpeed processors able to be updated with amazing features
@@btonelli what if, for those who have plenty of F mount marvelous lenses Nikon pushed the D780 concept even further : a 100% hybrid with native F mount and all the improved technology of the Z system?!!!! A DSLR Looking camera without the need of an FTZ A D880!!! 👌☺️
More seriously the D6 isn’t that far and it has eye detection The D780 is half way between DSLR and Mirror less They both could be implemented with the unique feature of the Zf to my point of view.
@@btonelli It's great to see Nikon adding software features to an already capable hardware like the Z8, but I agree with @didierMoulinphotography regarding Nikon abandoning DSLRs as a whole. They can at least enhance some features that are shared among all their cameras, like snapbridge for example (I have a D850 and a Z50 and it's annoying to use snapbridge on both). And I wouldn't mind an additional ability to connect the camera to a hotspot instead of the camera initiating an ad-hoc hotspot by itself.
@@HussainAlkumaishreality is the more they focus on updating DSLR’s that means taking people away from working on more better enabled future ready products. I understand the nostalgia and love for the older cameras but DSLR cameras for the most part are no longer the direction companies are going towards except Pentax. The Z system has matured to the point that it has surpassed the technology and performance of DSLR’s with even better lenses.
I wouldn't say they are trying to hook their customers up with the intention of being nice... They are trying to recapture back some of the market. That's been clear with virtually every action they have taken. Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing. But I would not, as a potential customer, expect this to be something Nikon does longterm. As always, buy the camera because you like it with the features it already has.
Should take delivery tomorrow of a Z8 after 6 GREAT years with a d850. Your comments regarding the firmware updates & apparent new Nikon business model to assure continued value (customer retention & Canon/Sony converters) is a material change for Nikon users but will also shake up the industry. The value added will be too hard to ignore. Do you think once implemented across the product line - new generation product cycles will extend somewhat & lead to less overall number of bodies in the lineup?
Congrats! Good question, I hope so to be honest. I think too many models creates more work for the teams to support every camera. I would prefer less cameras with focus on improving the more concise lineup versus making a ton of models
Wirh all these wonderful latest updates foe for the Z8, it would only further fuel the curiousity of the in coming Z6III ?That auto capture feature introduced to the Z8 is the big one for me, second being pixel shift....Yes, Nikon do listen to consumers.
Let’s see. I hope people aren’t hyping up this Z6III to the point that when it does come out it won’t meat the expectations. If it had a bit more than the Zf that’s already good 😊
Nikon please, on next firmware version 3.0 I would like to see the top Control Panel display to be a little brighter and with more contrast when I turn it on
@@underalexander it won't be very good for them marketing - wise, people rush to get the ZF just to have this feature and I do not think Nikon would even include this update in any of their future releases, not unless it's a ZFii...its a Retro perk, much like the dedicated B&W switch
@@nethbt I didn't see Nikon's marketing materials stating that this feature was exclusive to the Zf, nor did they advertise it in any way. Zf is beautiful in its own right, and I bought it without even realizing the existence of such a useful feature that is hard to call retro. And knowing that this feature is not on the flagship Z8/Z9 prevents me from replacing my Sony system and switching entirely to Nikon, thus satisfying my video shooting needs. It's bad marketing getting in the way of sales of flagship models. IMHO
Everything is very good, but there is still a problem with the focus on a person's eyes with the Z8. It is not OK ... for close distance and portraits it is good but if you want a person in full height ... it does not find the eyes.
24-70 ...85 .... if you are shooting a portrait to the waist, there is no problem, but if you are shooting in full length, 90% lose focus on the eyes, for this money, the focus is not well done... it just needs to be stuck and yes does not move from the object.
Search would be great, but I use Google, enter the camera model and what I want to do and the answer appears. Search is very difficult to do right but no one does it better than Google
@@btonelli I really like how small the Z9 is. My first Nikon, a F3 with the MD-4 was taller and heavier, and did a Blistering 5fps. My D8**s and D200 are all a bit taller too, as they have the Grips. I really wanted an integral Grip cause it will Never Loosen and Wobble, and the Camera is so much Easier to hold than My other Bodies were when they didn't have the Grips attached
@@btonelli It was a Solid Camera. You could Drop Kick it, use it as a Hockey Puck, and it would keep on clicking. Manual Film Advance was so smooth. The only thing I didn't like was the Flash Shoe. This is why i will never touch any sony. If I'm buying a 6k camera just to get out featured by a 1500 camera in less than a year then no thank you sony. You can keep your cameras. @@HesselFolkertsma perhaps or maybe not. The Z8 has been very successful thus far as well as the Z9. They could sit back and wait a bit but the fact they are aggressive shows something
@@btonelliI agree. Working parttime in photo retail, I’ve seen a high amount of Z8/9’s cross the counter a LOT this past year. For us though, it’s mostly prosumer Nikon DSLR customers migrating onto mirrorless.
Very good "sit"through of the new firmware update, there is just one thing I would like to comment on; the Nikon Finger Syndrom!? What was that? 😊 I am sorry, but for over thirty years I have hold on to my cameras grip with the same three to four fingers, even for a full day of shooting, and I have never seen anyone with any Camera Finger Syndrom. But nice try 😂
The missing feature: Load Custom LUTs like any proper camera. Rather than a bunch new useless picture controls (who's shooting in JPG??), how about I load the LUT I'm actually going to use and actually need to expose for.
@@btonelli tbh I don’t think they’re listening. They have so little market share in that space and know they’ll never catch up to Sony or Canon. So instead, let’s give the bird guys better tracking. 🤷🏽
@@MojoPapiFPV they are listening, that I can tell you. They read the comments on videos and see what users are asking for. Birding (wildlife and sports) is important for many that use Nikon cameras and so addressing this helps them. They have been building their super zoom and telephoto range for a while and not they have the AF to match the glass. The Firmware updates aren’t over yet. Let’s see what’s next.
Why don't they add a 'lock' to make them more secure??? Iphones cost a third of the price & are a third the size but they have a lock to open the phone. Why not put a lock on expensive cameras with an option to leave unlocked for a period of time like 5 mins/10/20/1 hour/3 hours etc while it's being used? It would certainly put thieves off from stealing them.
Birders, who are the vast minority, caused a lot of fuss. Nikon should have made all focus types up to snuff upon the Z8 launch. The shutter sound should be addressed.
this is all fine and dandy to say, but they really don't give you much of anything firmware wise when you look at their cameras before the expeed 7 processor. z5, z6ii, z7ii, got little to nothing. While as you said the z9 is already on 4.0... not bashing them because business is business, but not mentioning the fact the ALL the prosumer cameras got no huge updates in the last 4 years aint it lol. especially because they truly needed it.
Reality is in the last few years since the Z9 has come out Nikon has really been adding more and more features to the camera that for many companies could be considered a mark II etc. yes the previous cameras didn’t get the same kind of updates but they did get updated.
@@btonelli the z6ii and z7ii didn't even get a 2.0 firmware in 4 years. just minor things. All I am saying is for the people that are not buying the z8 or z9, they should know how Nikon treated the prosumer cameras.

Hello Bobby, Yes a search would be good. But to do for all the languages and do it like Google search I think it would take to much computer power. It would be like adding true AI into camera. Come on let there be some room for the skill or lack of skill of the photographer, we have to do some thing?
Yes I agree. With AI that will be the future but it will probably be there to help someone get the optimal settings for the scenario they are in. The core aspects of Photography, composition and lighting will always be user specific, but having a better way to find settings just makes sense in 2024.
Yes, but I think we have reached the point where cameras really need to add search to help user find functionality that’s embedded or named a certain way
@@btonelli - I thought the 'how do I this with my camera' is your guys job? 😁 But true, there's a tendency to use very expensive and sophisticated cameras more and more in almost full-auto (point and shoot) mode. Maybe AI comes to to the rescue there in the future? Tell the camera what you want to do, settings are changed automatically, it does what you want. Not that it is much different from those 'amateur' modes we had in entry level DSLR's, complete with cute symbols - but hey, it sounds way better if you used AI to set up your body if you're telling your friends how you took the image... 😂 I think at the end of the day one still needs to get involved if one wants to get the best out of his system, and that involves a bit of time and digging around. Plus it's fun, at least in my opinion.
Haha yes that is our job kinda 😂 For me I like the accomplishment of taking the photo and not having the camera do everything for us. I just want to know where the settings are for certain functions. I can’t stop a shoot to go on TH-cam haha.
Hmm... when someone is driving a car and has to check how to park it, then I think they did something wrong beforehand... 😊 If you're at a shoot and need to start searching then that's not good to begin with. If you really need, then do it on your cell phone. Lots of info on the net, including Nikon manuals, and what not. I don't think Nikon should waste resources for a in camera search. AI modes, why not. I mean we have 'bird AF' mode so why not have 'bird PHOTO' mode, with 'small bird, big bird' sub menus, and you can further pic 'fast, slow, erratic'. Kamera then changes all needed settings. And then portrait modes, and scenery modes, etc. Just like the d3500 had, just call them AI. Sounds more pro for z8 and z9 level cameras... 😅
@@marcusbraun8889that’s probably how AI will be implemented and it will detect what your taking photos of and recommend settings. With search it’s probably more simple, but will see. Everyone wants to be prepared on a shoot, but if a situation comes up and you need to find a solution, it’s good to have it in camera
Nikon is in a BAD market space after years of making BAD decisions. They are not in a position to segment and compete like Canon or Sony. They have to STOP 🛑 the bleeding and have released these great cameras well below the market value that they would charge before the years of BAD decisions that landed them in their current position. They're not doing the consumer a favor, their just trying to fulfill their fiduciary duty to the stakeholders and keep people from going to Sony or Canon like I did!
Actually I think they are doing better in the mirrorless market than Canon currently. Their offerings as of late are more interesting, feature rich and priced accordingly. Sure the Nikon of the past may have been different but every company needs to adapt and so far they have. Sony makes a solid camera and I like using them for certain applications, but one could argue and say Nikon is providing true hybrids without a lot of compromises currently
I honestly didn't even think my Z8 needed an update, so this is incredible.
Indeed. This really brings the best features to the Z8 now

Canon user here... First time I found one of your vids, awesome and very professional content, suscribed!
Thank you much appreciated. Working on a review for the Canon 200-800 lens that should be up soon!
Tremendous update, really impressed 👏🏻 Love your Search feature idea!
Thanks. Yes, a big update from them that would be a version 2 for other camera companies
i liked your wonderful video - Die hard nikon fans who were feeling let down for a few years are well & truly thrilled with the Z8 & Z9 and all the new firmware updates .
Great idea!! I’ll forward it to them
lovely review - subbed.
Definitely. Hope they add raw as well since Sony can do it.
Thanks for watching!!
This was the first time I've seen one of your videos. I was so impressed, I clicked on the Subscribe button.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Really appreciate the support
Honestly I love your way of explaining things. More so I am a Z8 user and I have been using nikon since the film Era.
That "search" update wld be a huge improvement.
Thanks for the update
Thanks much appreciated
The feature I would like added to the Z8/Z9 from the Zf is to have tracking work with manual focus lenses. I use 100% or 200% zoom to help focus, and if eye tracking would have the focus point move to the eye while zoomed, it would be incredible.
Thanks!! The tracking is currently in the Z8 Z9 but let’s see what happens in the future
I didn't realize that there were so many bird photographers that they needed a separate focus function. I still wait to Z6 III is in store :)
Nikon is doing some fantastic stuff over the past few years. Gotta give them credit most of their releases have been solid
Voice Search. Simple voice to text menu filtering. I agree this would be stellar.
Thanks!
I'm totally elated over this update to the Z8
It’s fantastic
Hi Bobby - the search idea is a great one - agreed the Z8 is definitively the top hybrid 35mm camera on the market and keeps getting better.
-PD
Thanks! Kudos to Nikon for constantly improving it
And don’t forget the Z6ii and Z7ii many of the features you mention here are in their firmware upgrades.
Nikon earn the loyalty of their customers through both firmware and for example the sensor on the Z7ii may be at least as good as the Z8 and great say, for landscapes.
@@Stephen_Baker agree on the sensor of the Z7II. Fantastic image quality
Nice, thanks! I’m waiting for the Z8 ii which I expect will include Z6 III updates!
Prob not for a couple years :)
@@btonelliyes yes, I am agree that Nikon will have good space for z8..Its killer .. i just bought .
The feature I would love saving the banks so once you set them up they are not modified unless you turn the feature on. Also saving the menu banks into an internal memory so when the mem cards are formatted they are not lost.
Very good ideas! Like these too!
Would be nice search features. Great video !
Thanks!
This is a great video. Nikon has done a great thing with this firmware upgrade. I think the search function would work but it's a great idea to learn our camera. I think Nikon did a great job with providing options to customized and save the most used settings. We can also use the Banks to do this as well.
Thank you 🙏
I think it's awesome.
Yes indeed. Nikon has shown you don’t need a mark II. Just need to give consumers solid firmware updates
That idea from Thom sounds good! Definitely would help
You could already cycle AF modes with a function button. Bird detect has levelled up the Z8 👌🏻
The a9III is really impressive. I went into the review a bit unsure but damn..this is the future
@@btonelli just looked at the af mode. And it’s a tap to cycle through option rather than press and turn a dial. Love it! 👍🏻
You surprised me with “search” as the missing. But it’s a good one. My vote for #1 missing thing is adding shooting mode (single, continuous, etc) to the bank settings. It’s dumb that you have to separately change that.
Good idea!
Most informative Video - based on above and how good Z8 & Z9, the rumored Z6 III going to be a hot cake sellar
Thanks! Yes it should be!
Thank you. Yes would be great if they did RAW. Hopefully in the future
is there a difference in results on pixel shift stacking between the NX Studio and something like PS for stacking or did you use some other software I'm not acquainted with ?
I’m probably the wrong person to ask as I don’t use Pixel Shift. Perhaps ask Matt Irwin as I believe he does use this feature more.
new bird detections pure fire
Indeed. Crazy fast and accurate
How would the budget Nikon 180-600 perform in the AF department on the Z8? Can it match up with the fixed focal length 600/6.3? Or will the inferior 180-600 STM motor miss a lot, a lot of shots? Thanks
Hard to say. I didn’t test it but I guess it would fair decently depending on its limitations.

Thanks for watching. The update is quite significant and this enhanced tracking seems to also help with other subjects as well
Nikon is still the King of mirrorless camera. The 8K 60fps is overkill. Can't wait for Nikon Z9 II.
They are really making their mark. I shoot in 8k more than I thought I would. Like it quite a bit

Crazy question for the NIKON development team:
Is it possible to combine Pixel shift and focus shift together?

Bobby,
Did they bring manual focus eye assist from the Zf to the Nikon z8 in this FW update.

This is why I didn't switch to Canon or Sony.
They are bringing the features in a big way
While I agree with most of the feedback on Sony’s lack luster firmware updates I still got a great camera two years in advance of a competitive product from Nikon and even though I bought a Z9 I did not get a smaller, easier to travel with stacked sensor body till the Z8 and that’s still not that small.
Thanks! Yes good option as well. I think this will probably come to the Z9 before the Z8
@@btonelli I really hope so.
Since you didn’t go through all the updates, I’m still waiting for a 5:4 crop and wondered if they’ve finally made that change and it’s included?
Unfortunately it wasn’t added in
Cycling AF has been added to multiple buttons not only F1 & F2.
Good to know. On my notes from Nikon it was only Fn1 and Fn2
One thing I wish Z8 had is smaller RAW option. I would need option to shoot at around 20 MP as well as 45 MP.
I believe there is.
Does pre-capture work with back button focus?
Hopefully at least some of these features will be in an update in the Z6/7 mk1 and 2's.

Three questions:
1. A Nikon issue that can be rather easily addressed via firmware and which is VERY serious, as far as I am concerned, but which I am not aware of being mentioned as much as it should:
Nikon, as far as I know, does not [and never did] offer an option to correct photo orientation in camera and if 3rd party [software] is thus employed weird things happen to the photo files [JPG’s and NEF’s], which prevent them from being fully recognizable/manageable/editable by the very same camera that took them.
@@btonelli Thank you for replying, however you do not answer my questions:
1. I am talking about photo orientation *_correction_* , not correct display of already badly oriented photos
2. also *_longer_* filenames, not limited customization of fixed length filenames neither unjustifiably limited amount of photo files in a folder
3. finally I am talking about *_QUICK_* shooting parameter set recall - like, for instance, is the case with the Z 6 II - thus not missing the shot.
Great Video >> Thank you Bobby
Thanks
And I would like to see the manual focus zoom mode update smoother on z8, for it displays much slower than on zf
It’s supposed to be smoother with this update as well. Have you tried it?
Yes I tried it, unless I'm doing something wrong its the same as the last firmware, when you are zoomed in in still mode, try panning and see how much it blurs the image, its just not updating at 60 fps. when you zoom out its displaying again smoothly. @@btonelli
Thanks Nikon! Nice update
Indeed. Great update
Hi there
I was wondering why Nikon stop updating firmware for the DSLR?
They could be kind to their customer base using recent DSLR with recent Xpeed processors able to be updated with amazing features
The DSLR segment has reached its limit in terms of technology. I think Nikon is using their resources to build up the mirrorless line of their cameras
@@btonelli what if, for those who have plenty of F mount marvelous lenses Nikon pushed the D780 concept even further : a 100% hybrid with native F mount and all the improved technology of the Z system?!!!! A DSLR Looking camera without the need of an FTZ
A D880!!! 👌☺️
More seriously the D6 isn’t that far and it has eye detection
The D780 is half way between DSLR and Mirror less
They both could be implemented with the unique feature of the Zf to my point of view.
I have an issue pushing the photo gallery and the gallery is not showing up at all after taking a photo.
Hmm not sure what’s happening with that.
I think we will see this way of working with customers for a while and hope they continue but valid points.

@@nethbt I didn't see Nikon's marketing materials stating that this feature was exclusive to the Zf, nor did they advertise it in any way.
Hmm what lens are you using? I didn’t come across this issue
24-70 ...85 .... if you are shooting a portrait to the waist, there is no problem, but if you are shooting in full length, 90% lose focus on the eyes, for this money, the focus is not well done... it just needs to be stuck and yes does not move from the object.

lol!!!
😂
Very good "sit"through of the new firmware update, there is just one thing I would like to comment on; the Nikon Finger Syndrom!? What was that? 😊
I am sorry, but for over thirty years I have hold on to my cameras grip with the same three to four fingers, even for a full day of shooting, and I have never seen anyone with any Camera Finger Syndrom. But nice try 😂
Thanks! I was having some fun with the feature of holding down the shutter release consistently for 5 min as a feature haha 😂
the one feature missing is…affordability. Nikon pricing is utterly insane at this point.
@@westpalmdoc hmm the Z8 is actually priced quite aggressively considering
Waiting for the pixel shift on my Z9. 😕
Yes. Strange it’s not in the Z9
The search function will be nice to have, but then is there any camera with a search function ........
Not yet, but with Nikon always adding features, they seem to be the one that could do it
The missing feature: Load Custom LUTs like any proper camera. Rather than a bunch new useless picture controls (who's shooting in JPG??), how about I load the LUT I'm actually going to use and actually need to expose for.
Actually very good idea! As more users start taking advantage of the strong video features let’s hope Nikon adds this in.
This video is shot beautify
Thank you 🙏
Why don't they add a 'lock' to make them more secure??? Iphones cost a third of the price & are a third the size but they have a lock to open the phone. Why not put a lock on expensive cameras with an option to leave unlocked for a period of time like 5 mins/10/20/1 hour/3 hours etc while it's being used? It would certainly put thieves off from stealing them.
You know this is actually a good idea.
@@btonelliIt could be done via a firmware update, too.
Birders, who are the vast minority, caused a lot of fuss. Nikon should have made all focus types up to snuff upon the Z8 launch.
The shutter sound should be addressed.
Perhaps but they have addressed it now. There are new shutter sounds in this update too
@@btonelli thats good to hear. admittedly, its the only thing i dont like about the z8. lets hope the new shutter sounds are more pleasing.
snapbridge needs to get better! It’s so much easier remote shooting on sony cameras
my new Z8 gives me banding in HSS with godox ad400pro flashes shooting faster than 1/1000s. such a shame for otherwise great camera
Yep
Maybe a ‘Siri like feature
Perhaps if it’s good with multiple languages
Nikon abandoned the z6ii users, seemed to promise updates that never came. It's pretty much the same as the Z6i...
Obviously some differences but the Z6II has been out for a number of years now so there will probably be an mark III in the near future
Would love LUT support for video and stills
In what way?
@@btonelli Panasonic has it in S5mk2 works really well
@@LarsSteenhoff I see yes. Panasonic has some really good features that are quite unique for video
@@btonelliThe real-time LUT feature is also available for stills shooting on the S5ii as well which is an added bonus.
@@doogieham I saw that. Very cool feature
In the meantime, Sony is charging for their firmware updates . . . when they actually do them.
Some yes like the grid lines others no. Hopefully they will improve this going forward.
Search, yes 100%
@@roderickmclean9927 indeed
this is all fine and dandy to say, but they really don't give you much of anything firmware wise when you look at their cameras before the expeed 7 processor. z5, z6ii, z7ii, got little to nothing.
@@DayumMarq I understand. My personal opinion is the Z9 was a big reset for Nikon. From performance to firmware to how they are going to compete. Unfortunately the cameras before it were limited in their potential. Going forward it seems Nikon is designing their cameras for the multiple upgrades for better performance.
@@btonelli yeah. I really hope so. Now that the processor is the same, it would be nice to not feel “forgotten” as a z6iii owner lol. Like I did with the z6ii.
@@DayumMarq you won’t be
Search …. GREAT IDEA OMG YES 😊
Hopefully one day
still no back up video recoding :(
With two different card slots and speeds available, it may be difficult for some formats I’m guessing. But I think up to 4K should be okay though.
@@btonelli everyone else has been doing it for years now. Also the z9 has 2 fast cards and still can’t do it. They can even just do proxies on the SD card. As long as there is some sort of back up. It’s the only reason I don’t use Nikon for video at weddings and still stick to Sony for video and Nikon for photo.
Man that sensor shield malfunction is getting more and more prevalent isn't it? I think the best remedy is to just disable it completely to avoid any wear and tear
What do you mean? Haven’t had an issue at all
wow ! I diverge from the topic. Bobby you look great ! right of the bet 5 years younger than a year ago .its obvious to me . just saying .
best regards .
ps im not gay or else .
Hahaha thanks!! Had some hair work done about a year ago. Makes a difference
duh we all know it . I meant general freshness . I remember self after each case of covid , had 4 so far , I was looking like Gary Oldman, pun intentional . and It taken like 6 months to get better after each instance . you've reminded me this . all and all I believe complements are free so why not to bestow em freely :) cheers @@btonelli
@@oshanefathank you 🙏🙏
Good video …you present it with a good personality… Now you just have to learn how to pronounce the name of the camera. Its nigh-con….not knee-con.
Thanks 🙏 Actually it’s Knee Con. In Japan they say it this way. Americans in the US say Nigh
It’s still so weird to hear an American say ‘niKAHN’. No notes on the content.
I live in Asia so I pronounce it the way they say it in Japan :). Thanks for watching
@@btonelli To be fair, the Japanese don’t pronounce it ‘niKAHN’ either though. Thanks for the video and the content. Wish you continued success with your career and channel!
The core aspects of Photography, composition and lighting will always be user specific, but having a better way to find settings just makes sense in 2024.
and batterylife
There's always one feature missing... 🙄
Yes, but I think we have reached the point where cameras really need to add search to help user find functionality that’s embedded or named a certain way
@@btonelli - I thought the 'how do I this with my camera' is your guys job? 😁
But true, there's a tendency to use very expensive and sophisticated cameras more and more in almost full-auto (point and shoot) mode.
I think at the end of the day one still needs to get involved if one wants to get the best out of his system, and that involves a bit of time and digging around. Plus it's fun, at least in my opinion.
Haha yes that is our job kinda 😂
For me I like the accomplishment of taking the photo and not having the camera do everything for us. I just want to know where the settings are for certain functions. I can’t stop a shoot to go on TH-cam haha.
Hmm... when someone is driving a car and has to check how to park it, then I think they did something wrong beforehand... 😊
If you're at a shoot and need to start searching then that's not good to begin with.
NFS, Nikon finger syndrome lol
Hahaha 🤣
