When do we stop calling this a gambling case and start calling it a theft/embezzlement crime. The gambling seems secondary as a newsworthy topic now that Ohtani is in the clear.

The bookie knew he was dealing with Ohtani directly, or by proxy via Ippei. Several days before the Feds cleared Ohtani, Jeff Passan went to Michael Kay's show and said this case was "rotten as hell". Passan, Tisha Thompson and (ex ESPN) Rich Eisen were all too sensational to the extent they all created a baseless cloud of suspicion surrounding Ohtani. First, they tried to spread Mizuhara’s bogus confession even after he recanted it. Second, they emphasized on “change of story by Ohtani” which didn’t exist. Third, they questioned if (and which) authorities have been contacted by Ohtani’s lawyers. Fourth, they repeatedly questioned if the purported theft was possible without Ohtani’s involvement or knowledge.
Feds cleared all of these doubts and say Ohtani was a victim through and through. Ohtani had previously stated such in the clearest language and unusually strong legal position. The victim has no further obligation to answer to anyone else but authorities, to which he fully cooperated.
ESPN should look back and think what they did. I can imagine Thompson’s eyes lit up when she saw Ohtani’s name in the leaked investigation. This could have been her career defining moment as the breaker of the next Pete Rose. But trying to publish Mizuhara’s initial account without directly vetting Ohtani is beyond sloppy. She was saved by Ohtani’s lawyers and LA times but went on to publish Ippei’s lies anyway to cause enough damage and confusion to the extent Ohtani haters continue to throw their fall-guy conspiracy theories even today.
Rich Eisen should have taken the wait-and-see despite all this McGwire nonsense (which itself created the presumption of guilt). Instead, Eisen, a self-claimed Ohtani fan, used his platform to actively contribute to creating the atmosphere of suspicion.

The atmosphere of suspicion was created by millions and millions of dollars going from his bank account to the bank account of a book maker. I think Rich did a more than fair job reporting on the information that was available when it was available. If ESPN buried this story then it would have created additional suspicion that sports gambling is indeed being fixed.

@Acebets70 No one needs to apologize to Ohtani. Get real. Why does he deserve an apology? People are falsely accused daily. What makes Ohtani special? Wait, I got it. Because he's an athlete being idolized by a group of fans. I love sports. But I have never felt the need to come to the defense of an athlete. I wonder about people like you and them. This guy wouldn't urinate on you if it would save your life. He doesn't care about you or any other fan. Why are you worried about someone apologizing to him? You don't find that odd?

They tried to portray the victim, Ohtani, as a criminal based on poor evidence. Whether Mizuhara is a villain or Ohtani's English is inadequate, these are no excuses for not apologizing to Ohtani. I can't help but feel that at their core, there is a discriminatory disrespect towards Ohtani, who is Japanese.

ESPN reported without question what Mizuhara said, who has been lying constantly for years, telling Otani to learn English, but isn't what is being done the same as Otani, who cannot speak English, being deceived by Mizuhara?
Why does Otani attract so many people from all over the world? It is because he genuinely enjoys and loves baseball like a child. He expresses the excellence of the sport of baseball with his whole body, transcending language. The account from which the money was stolen is the account that contains the annual salary, and it is reported that the money has never been touched for three years. This also shows Otani's humanity.

Exactly! I think the reason why most Japanese didn’t doubt about Ohtani’s involvement was because we knew how he was since he was in high school. When his coach from Fighter’s was interviewed, “What impressed you the most about Ohtani?”, the interviewer was actually asking about his ability to play…if it’s pitching, batting, running or fielding, but his response was, “His personality” without a hesitation. He also went on and said he had never met a human being as perfect as Ohtani is. When I watched that interview, as well as any interviewers …his ex-managers, teammates, high school teachers, high school friends, neighbors ….just genuinely praising about him over and over …you know what kind of a person he is when everyone is super excited about praising the guy. We have also watched how he handled interviews or his mannerisms during the variety shows way before he came to America. I know he doesn’t appear on TV shows here in the states and he stopped doing so in Japan also but he did tons in Japan before he became this big and that’s how we know much more about him than Americans do. I think that frustrate us the most. You don’t know anything about him so don’t judge him!!!

He is a very straight guy who did not even go out for a drink with his teammates. We know more about how nice, respectful and humble he has been than most Americans know because not every TV shows made available for us has been translated to English so I understand that most Americans want to judge him based on your culture and history. I’m not saying that everyone in Japan is the same way by all means. But in Tokyo alone in 2022, there was about $26M cash returned to the police stations as lost and found item. 😂 Vs, there was a yong Japanese man robbed and killed this year in LA that went practically unnoticed by many of us here. I think it’s fair to say our couture is a bit more strict and respectful than most other countries and for us to know how he is better than most of us in Japan even with that standards, that says something about him and that’s the reason why he is respected and loved most of us. If you don’t want to accept he could be innocent and want to just label him with the rest of the gambler, then so be it. It’s your opinion and I respect it. First few years, my English was good enough to have casual conversation and understood relating about my profession. However it took me years more to understand formal letters, legal letters, documents, contracts etc. Because there are vocabularies that we don't use in everyday life. Other thing is I was able to speak better than hearing English especially not familiar vocabularies. We settled in Bensonhurst, NY, where I began attending New Utrecht High School. Soon after starting, I was in a fight with a bully. When the school counselor called my parents about my suspension, I had to step in as the translator since my parents didn't speak English and the counselor's Italian was far from perfect. I managed to convince my parents that I was doing so well in school that I was granted three days of home study as a reward. They believed me and praised my achievements. However, my triumph was short-lived. A few days later, a neighbor spilled the beans about the fight to my mother. I ended up getting a terrible beating from her. From then on, my parents relied on my younger brother to translate for the family, for years.

There are levels of language fluency. It’s not a simple yes or no when you are learning a second language. Jeff Passan talked with Ohtani in English about a baseball game, but I doubt he would have the same impression of Ohtani's English fluency if they were discussing complicated topics like financial, legal, or medical issues which require a higher level of fluency. In addition, one-on-one conversations tend to be easier to follow along in your non-primary language, than discussions in group settings, meetings, lectures, or fast-paced discussions. In fact, in Ohtani's press conference and the federal complaint, Ohtani states that he understood something was wrong at the Dodgers team meeting, but did not understand the details of what was being discussed. Plus, I think it's important to note that when Jeff Passan spoke with Ohtani he had lived in the US for a few years. I'm sure his recent/current level of English is not reflective of his fluency when he first came to the US in 2018 and Mizuhara helped him to set up the bank account he later stole from. At that time, he most likely knew very little English. Unless reporters have Ohtani's TOEFL scores, I think it's best not to assess his overall English fluency based on one conversation about a topic that Ohtani is very familiar with and a short interview about baseball cleats. BTW, on Twitter, you can also find a video of the person interviewing Ohtani about his cleats asking Ohtani to record a congratulation video to his daughter's friend on their recent graduation and Ohtani asks if he can say the message in Japanese, not English.

Here's what I'll say about Rich's question about Shohei's English. One can be fairly conversant in conversational English but be at a total loss when it comes to the simplest financial terms. Even the words that appear on something as "basic" as an ATM interface (balance inquiry, transfers and payments, recent transactions, etc.) could be things he wouldn't pick up in conversational English.

As a Japanese, I would say Shohei’s English ability is about 20-30% of native people, which is enough to have casual conversations, but not enough to communicate in complicated situations, especially finances.
However, I’m sure he can read, so his agent and accountant could have sent him English messages (and kindly with Japanese google translation) if it’s important.

He comes off like a really good dude.. but he needs a crash course on some financial basics, English and just human dynamics it seems.. it’s hard to be a good steward of a billion dollars and not have a single clue as to ANYTHING that’s going on in your world..

If YOU can read English, read the report properly! This is an old account which was opened in 2018 the week he arrived from Japan in Arizona ST. TO REGISTER as a Salary account.
Since the opening, Shohei never used this account as when he went back to LA, the Agency opened several other accounts he has since been using.
So this first account only accumulated salaries, bonuses from the Angels. Ohtani never transacted(withdrew money from it) practically dormant for him. Just parking salary, which he never touched. And Ippei never connected it to Ohtanis mail or mobile.

It's the compromise he had to make in order to achieve a level of mental and physical performance that literally millions of superhuman athletes have tried and failed to do. Everyone around him confirms that he doesn't want to waste any mental, physical, or emotional energy on anything besides baseball. Don't worry about the finances. You'll be glad to know he probably already earned more than $300 million (his endorsements always dwarf his salary) even before the LA contract started!

Ok, but everything is about the degree.. I totally understand him being hyper focused on his craft.. that’s good! But if you turn EVERYTHING else off, then you open yourself up to nonsense like this situation.. and if things go a little bit differently, not being vigilant could have put his baseball career in real jeopardy..
All of this was avoidable with just a little bit more care and awareness..
the other richest athletes that I know off the top of my head - MJ, Lebron, Tiger.. have all accomplished more in their sports (so far), have made more money (so far) and all have been heavily involved with their business(es).. Shohei has a chance to be in their tier.. and quite frankly, that’s what we all want to see.. but some of that is on him to take the bull by the horns.. it’s harder to be a superstar, for sure.. but that’s what he is..
I’m not worried about him.. I’m rooting for him

@gbmbg114 Let's quickly annihilate your comparisons. First, you used two people in a five person sport and 1 in a solo sport... Of course, they have 'more' accomplishments overall. Second, Shohei earns less because he is also less greedy (MJ and LeBron are notriously fame and money focused). Third, Shohei has already won two MPV's and is top ten as a hitter and pitcher. Literally no other athlete is comparable right now. In order to find one, an NFL player would have to play WR and Linebacker or something like that.

    • @gbmbg114
      @gbmbg114 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

@zaneplatt3533 Lol annihilate my comparisons? Why?? You sound like a Shohei fan.. so shouldn’t you want him to be in the category of greatest of all time?!? Lol.. those guys I listed are in that category..
Shohei is the best baseball player in the world right now.. and he’s doing something unprecedented.. but a couple of years of domination doesn’t make you the greatest of all time.. I’m rooting to see him get to that level, because he can do it.. but all you heard was “MJ, Lebron and Tiger are better”.. I was giving examples for the other guy who said Shohei couldn’t focus on ANYTHING other than baseball if he wanted to be great at the sport.. so I named 3 greats who were able to focus on more than one thing and still be the best at their sport.. that’s it.
I’m not just a fan of players on the field/court.. I want to see them succeed as PEOPLE too - that goes for all people, even you.. and as a fan of Shohei Ohtani, the PERSON.. I’m wishing him well in being able to manage himself better AND continue to dominate baseball.. it can be done.
